At the port in the middle of town, you’ll be greeted by your first moai – Ahu Tautira. To the north are some scenic spots complete with more moai, as well as the Sebastian Englebert Museum of Anthropology – a good place to get acquainted with the Easter Island story.

After breakfast, join the other travellers on a guided excursion around Easter Island. The island covers an area of 117 square km, so you’ll see most of the island in a day. Leave Hanga Roa and travel along the south coast to Ahu Vaihu, where you’ll see eight large toppled moai lying face down on the ground. Continue to Rano Raraku – a volcano also known as 'the nursery of the moai' because the statues around the island were cut from the stones that came from this quarry. Here, you can find the 21-m-high moai – the largest one ever carved! At Ahu Tongariro, see the 15 restored moai on the coastline. The originals were destroyed by a huge tidal wave in 1960. Along the north coast is Anakena – a beautiful sandy beach with swaying palm trees, with a moai standing guard.

Today you’ll visit the Orongo Ceremonial Village, set 400 m high on a ridge with the ocean on one side and the crater lake of Rano Kau on the other. This village is home to remnants relating to a birdman cult that has been around for centuries. Learn about these art remnants, then check out the moai at Ahu Vinapu. In the afternoon, travel to Akivi to see the seven moai that overlook the site of an ancient village. Tonight, watch the sunset and enjoy a free evening to find dinner.

Overall very satisfied with the trip, particularly the same guide throughout the trip was a big plus, so each day’s activities were known ahead of time. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative.

Travelers should know that you are not with an Intrepid tour leader but with a guide from a loccl company that Intrepid contracts with, and the sequence of your activities may not line up as the booking states. So the quality of tour will depend on the local guide. We had a Rapa Nui native guide who is very knowledgeable about local history.

Intrepid made the arrangements and the locals executed resulting in a delightful, educational, and fun visit to Rapa Nui. From the moment I was met at the airport, to the return trip, everything went like clockwork. The tours (which differed in schedule from those advertised because of Christmas) were perfectly scheduled. I loved the accommodations.

Do not miss Rapa Nui. It is worth the trip. However, do make sure that there are flights in/out when you need. PreCovid this was not a problem. After the Covid re-opening flights are far and few between and may require a day or more extra stay (there is enough to do for a week). Also, make sure you understand why Intrepid calls this a "Short Break" as they seem to have less control over the tour than on the mainland and they are mostly a facilitating agency and not deeply involved in the tour
