Experience Overview

Outside the golden cultural triangle of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, the rural landscape of Andalucía is breathtaking. This hiking adventure in Spain takes us through rugged hills, sunflower fields and olive groves, while also visiting the limestone peaks of Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, El Chorro gorge, and the cliffside walkway of El Caminito del Rey. In this corner of Europe, the excesses of modern life do not seem to have taken root and our home for the week is the perfect example: a rustic cortijo (farmhouse) in the agricultural heartlands, which is reserved exclusively for our groups. Additionally, there’s a whole day reserved to explore the magnificent city of Seville. Please note: There are Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) or Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures for this trip. Please check the Dates & Prices tab to confirm the Activity Level rating for each departure before booking as these do not run simultaneously. For a day-by-day schedule for each Activity Level, see the itinerary tab.

Trip For You
This trip is Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate) or Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging) depending on dates, with five walking days. For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us. Walking is mostly on well-marked paths; this is a hilly area, so expect some easy ascents. Walking hours stated in the itinerary are given as approximates only. Timings include lunch and photo stops and will vary depending on the pace of your group. The majority of drives are short except for the journey to Seville, which is approximately two hours. While most departures are rated Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate), we also offer trips with Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging), which allow us to ascend the higher peaks and walk on more challenging terrain for longer hours. It is important to be fit on these departures. Please note, all activities are optional and a rest day may be taken at any point should you prefer to relax at the cortijo. Cortijo Rosario is renovated to a high standard, while maintaining traditional heritage, so the farmhouse should not be considered a luxury villa or hotel.
Group Description
An Exodus leader will be guiding all the walks and sightseeing in the villages and smaller towns such as Setenil. However, due to Spanish legislation, Exodus leaders are not allowed to guide groups in big cities, museums and churches. In Seville you will be free to sightsee at your own pace but you may also wish to organise a private city tour with a local guide. Please request this to your leader on arrival and they should be able to book it for you (payable locally).
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, four picnic lunches and six evening meals are included. Breakfast: Continental buffet breakfast with local fruit and yoghurt.Lunch: Packed lunches are provided for most day walks, usually filled with cheese/cold meats. On some days it is possible to enjoy authentic tapas in local villages.Dinner: All food is freshly prepared from locally grown seasonal produce, and the meals come with complimentary wine, tea and coffee. A selection of soft and alcoholic drinks are available at the bar (payable locally). Vegetarians are generally well catered for at Cortijo Rosario. Please note that due to the remote location of the accommodation, it is not always possible or ideal for the local staff to make last-minute menu changes. It is, therefore, crucial you advise us on booking if you have any special dietary requirements.
Transportation
A private minibus will be used for all transfers and organised excursions.

Weather Information
Spring generally enjoys pleasant daytime temperatures – 12C to 23C (53F to 73F) – and a little cooler in the evenings. There is the chance of rain, which then offers views of beautiful spring flowers. Summer months are hot and dry with daytime temperatures around 21C to 35C (70F to 95F), dropping to between 17C and 25C (62F to 77F) at night. Autumn brings cooler weather, although it is still fairly dry. The possibility of rain is more likely in winter months but temperatures stay mild in the daytime, becoming cooler after sunset.
Spending Money
For lunch in Seville, you should allow about €15 in a modest restaurant. If you wish to take part in the optional tapas lunches the leader will arrange a kitty to cover the cost. Entrance fees to monuments and museums are not included (some are free on the production of an EU passport) and we suggest you allow approximately €20 for this in Seville. You will also need cash to pay your bar bill at Cortijo Rosario.
Tipping
Although optional, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline we recommend to allow €15-€20 per leader per week. It is also customary to leave a tip for the driver and the local staff at the cortijo. This can be handed in to your leader at the end of the trip. For the local staff we recommend a budget of approximately €20 per person.

Cortijo Rosario, a converted farmhouse in the Andalucían countryside
Our base for the week is Cortijo Rosario, a converted farmhouse reserved exclusively for our groups. In the heart of the romantic Andalucían countryside, in the Seville province, the cortijo overlooks the small village of Algamitas and is within reach of Seville city and the charming town of Ronda. Together with its neighbouring sister village Villanueva, Algamitas is known as the forgotten village: modern development has more or less passed by and life goes on as it has for generations. Little English is spoken in the villages, as the tourism boom on the coast has not affected the welcoming community. The main income is agriculture, with olives the predominant crop along with cereals, wheat and sunflowers. This rural location really offers a fascinating insight into the real Andalucía. All rooms have private bathrooms and there is a bar, lounge, outdoor dining area, and a lovely pool open year-round (not heated). There are also two friendly dogs and a cat owned by the manager that like to lie on the patio in the sun. Cortijo Rosario has been renovated while retaining its traditional heritage. It is not a luxury villa or hotel, but all rooms are unique and have different sizes, as per the original structure of the building. Towels are changed once during the week and rooms are serviced every other day. Amenities  PoolBarLoungeOutdoor dining areaWi-fiHonesty bar Worth knowing There is one single room available, which can be guaranteed on a 'first-come, first-served' basis with a supplement payable in advance on booking. We may be able to confirm double rooms for single use closer to departure. Please contact our sales representative no more than two weeks before departure to check if this is available.Due to the remote location, special dietary requirements must be declared and requested at the time of booking. The road track to the hotel is due to undergo renovation works in the coming months. Please note that the current condition is currently problematic for some transfers, so a short walk to the hotel may be required.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start Cortijo Rosario, Algamitas

We stay at Cortijo Rosario in the heart of the Andalucían countryside, around 62mi (100km) from Malaga. Our converted farmhouse is just a short walk from Algamitas, a peaceful traditional village far from big towns or cities. It’s the ideal chance to experience the real Spain, while still offering easy access to the best walking spots and towns such as Olvera, Setenil and Seville, which we'll visit during the week. Please note: There are Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) and Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging) departures for this trip. This itinerary provides a day-by-day schedule for each Activity Level. Please check the Dates & Prices tab to confirm the Activity Level rating for each departure before booking. During each week, there will only be one Activity Level (2 or 4) which means these will never run simultaneously.

2
Day 2: Gentle walk to Villanueva de San Juan; optional tapas lunch – Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate)

Take a guided walk on the trails and paths around the cortijo and on to the neighbouring village of Villanueva. The countryside surrounding Algamitas is picture-perfect, covered with olive trees, beautiful farmland and rolling hills. During the walk, our leader will give us a good overview of the rural lifestyle and traditions in this part of the world, which are largely based around the production of olive oil. An optional tapas lunch in the village gives us a chance to soak up the authentic Andalucían atmosphere. Once back at the cortijo, enjoy free time by the pool or with a drink on the lovely outdoor terrace. We then have dinner and stay overnight at the cortijo. Distance: 7.5mi (12km); Ascent: 1,083ft (330m); descent: 1,083ft (330m); approximately six hours walking including stops

3
Day 3: Walk in the Sierra de Grazalema – Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate)

Our private bus will drive us high into the Grazalema Mountains, over the Pass of the Doves. Designated a Unesco biosphere reserve in 1977, the Sierra de Grazalema was declared the first natural park in Andalucía in 1984 and is one of most ecologically outstanding areas in Spain. It is best-known for having a spectacularly rugged limestone landscape of cliffs, gullies, caves and gorges. We walk up past this fantastic scenery and down into the white village of Benaocaz. Distance: 5.5mi (9km); Ascent: 892ft (272m); descent: 1,788ft (545); approximately four to five hours walking including stops

4
Day 4: Walk to Caños Santos Monastery; walk to the white village of Setenil - Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate)

Today we set out from Cortijo Rosario, walking through Algamitas farmland to the abandoned monastery of Caños Santos, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, follow the Ruta de los Molinos along the river that runs through the white village of Setenil de las Bodegas. Built under the overhanging ledge of a gorge, Setenil is not only known for having standout architecture but also for bars, restaurants and food shops, which are the best in the region. We have free time to discover Setenil and later return to the cortijo by private minibus. Distance: 7.5mi (12km); Ascent: 902ft (275m); descent: 902ft (275m); approximately five to six hours walking including stops

5
Day 5: Free day in Seville; return to the cortijo after dinner – Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate) and Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging)

In the morning we transfer by private minibus to magnificent Seville. Now the capital of Andalucía, the city was one of the first conquests of the Moors. After the fall of the Cordoba Caliphate in the 11th century, under whose direction it previously lay, it became the most powerful city in Al-Andalus. The day is free to sightsee at our own pace. Near the city centre is the evocative Giralda, an architectural masterpiece dating to the 12th century. Close by is the magnificent Alcazar, a complex of palaces dating from Roman times and later used by both Moorish and Christian rulers. It has fine examples of Moorish and Mudejar architecture (rivalling the Alhambra in Granada) and stunning sculpted gardens. After the Christian reconquest, Seville became the gateway to the ‘New World’; Christopher Columbus negotiated with Queen Isabella here to fund his voyage to the Americas, bringing her back untold riches and making Seville one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. After immersing ourselves in history and culture, we enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city in the evening, returning to the cortijo after dinner.

6
Day 6: Visit El Chorro gorge and walk El Caminito del Rey – Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate)

A short drive takes us to El Chorro gorge, where we are dropped off at the Guadalhorce Dam and reservoir to begin our walk. We’ll head to the start of El Caminito del Rey, a narrow cliffside path hanging 328ft (100m) above the Guadalhorce river. Originally built around 1905, and improved around 1921, it fell into disrepair, earning it the moniker ‘the most dangerous path in the world' or even the ‘walk of death'. The new Caminito del Rey was reconstructed and reopened to the public in 2015, with the route and design replicating (as much as possible) the old one, but with higher safety standards. After, there will be a chance to relax and rest by the reservoir. The Caminito del Rey ticket is included in the cost of the trip and will be arranged by Exodus upon booking. However, please be aware that for reservations made less than 90 days prior to departure, there may be a supplement to pay to guarantee entrance as ticket numbers are limited. We will be able to check this upon booking and confirm the amount of the supplement if it applies. Distance: 5.5mi (9km); Ascent: 574ft (175m); descent: 902ft (275m); approximately three hours walking

7
Day 7: Walk a circuit around the Peñon overlooking Algamitas – Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate)

Today we walk around the impressive Peñon Crag, which looms over Cortijo Rosario. El Peñon is the highest point in the Seville province, 3,700ft (1,130m) above sea level, offering dramatic views of the landscape around Algamitas and the neighbouring villages, hills and farmland. On the way back to the cortijo, we stop for drinks on a lovely panoramic terrace. Distance: 9mi (14km); Ascent: 1,542ft (470m); descent: 1,542ft (470m); approximately five hours walking including stops

8
Day 8: End Cortijo Rosario, Algamitas

Our final breakfast is the perfect chance to reflect on the many highlights of this unforgettable Andalucian escape. Once you're full up, bid a fond hasta pronto to our hosts, who may well feel more like family by now, before starting your return home.

Amazing scenery and great walks This was one of the best trips I have been on with Exodus. The accommodation was incredible and we all felt like it was home. The food amazing, the bedroom although small was homely. The staff so friendly. The drivers of the mini bus were always on time picking us up and the whole trip went like clockwork. Most Inspirational Moment Walking through the wild flowers and the Camino del Rey gorge. Each day was different and very enjoyable with beautiful and striking scenery. Thoughts on Group Leader Miguel (Michael) was so knowledgeable especially about the plants and birds of prey. He even organised a tapa lunch for us in Seville although it was his day off. Friendly and helpful. Advice for Potential Travellers Do take some warm clothing if going in early May. Unfortunately the weather although sunny was cooler, ideal for walking but not for sitting at the pool. You don’t need to bring your own tea and coffee as this is provided free with biscuits. You just help yourself. Suggestions I would highly recommend this trip as you see the “real Andalucia” away from the crowds. Visiting Seville midweek is a bonus.

Norma Hargraves   -  Traveled, May 2024

Spring Walk in Andalucia This trip leans more toward moderate walking rather than leisurely due to the terrain which is quite rocky. The weather the week I was there was clear, sunny, and warm. The countryside was filled with beautiful spring flowers which offset some of my disappointment in the general scenery and the walks through pasture lands where it was sometimes difficult to navigate holes hidden by grass, limestone outcroppings, and cattle paddies. The Cortijo Rosario was lovely and the staff very welcoming and accommodating. The dinners were very good and the staff very obliging to dietary requests without sacrificing taste or portions of substituted dishes. The only hiccup as far as our stay was being without hot water one evening. I would not mention it as we made do, and no one seemed upset over it, including myself, but I have read in other reviews that the same thing has happened. Algámitas is a very rural village with very few businesses (take what you will need), but the couple of times we made pre-hike morning stops for coffee at two of the cafes there were nice. Most Inspirational Moment Two moments: We had a lovely and delicious picnic set up for us at the monastery of Caños Santos on Day 3. This was a peaceful respite after our walk from the Cortijo. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the Caminito del Rey on Day 6. Our guide made sure we beat the crowd and I am grateful for that. We were able to walk it at our own pace, stopping as much as we wanted for photos and to admire the El Chorro gorge. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael was a good and knowledgeable (history, plants, wildlife) guide who set an appropriate walking pace for our group. He aptly timed quick rest stops and photo stops and was good at pointing out birds, plants and features we might be interested in and might have missed otherwise. He knows many of the locals so we were often warmly greeted along our way. I found him to be encouraging and supportive, showing each of us interest and a good sense of camaraderie. Advice for Potential Travellers I advise you use hiking shoes/boots and sturdy trekking poles. I used poles from the Cortijo but someone had theirs shipped beforehand. I also wore trail runners which I always hike in and they were fine, but I did wish I had brought my boots. Be sure to have what you need because there are not many places to shop until you go to Seville or Ronda. Most importantly, make sure you are in good enough physical shape to do the walks safely. Suggestions This was my fourth trip with Exodus. I started by going solo in 2019 and never regretted it. Don’t hesitate to take a trip!

Fantastic holiday Excellent trip with a variety of terrain and something different to offer every day. As described, it’s a grade2 level, with leisurely/moderate walking. The accommodation is homely and comfortable, the food great quality and variety, and the staff couldn’t be more helpful and friendly. There’s also a very reasonable honesty bar! Most Inspirational Moment Can't choose- every day had it's inspiring moment. The National Park was amazing, but what was unexpected was the mind blowing display of wildflowers at this time of year (April 20-27) on all walks. The walk through the oak wood and meadows day 4 was particularly memorable for the wildflowers, followed by the tapas picnic at the monastery, and then the visit to Setenil with the cave houses. We also saw so many birds of prey throughout the week- vultures, rare eagles etc which Miguel quickly identifies and lends you his binoculars! Thoughts on Group Leader Miguel inspired us all to embrace everything Andalusian with his expert knowledge of the fauna, flora, history and people. He led the walks at the right pace and pointed out so many things each day. He gave excellent advice , especially restaurants and bars in Seville and Malaga. Exodus is very fortunate to have him. Advice for Potential Travellers If you are into bird watching, bring your own binoculars. Have a wander round the village on your own late afternoon. We revisited the bar where we had coffee on day 4 the other side of the village. We were instantly recognised and welcomed, and either side of us had guys passionately playing dominoes! Show less

Great holiday Excellent walking over varied ground and in different environments, great accommodation and food and lovely hosts Most Inspirational Moment Walking in the Grazalema National park Thoughts on Group Leader Brilliant - shared extensive knowledge of flora and fauna worked really hard to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Set a sensible pace for the group. Advice for Potential Travellers Do pack footwear suitable for some rough tracks and terrain

Brigid R   -  Traveled, March 2024

Enjoyable but hot walks in a lovely part of Spain Varied walks in a beautiful landscape, some testing steep uphill sections (particularly on the “gentle” Day 2 walk) given the high temperatures at the beginning of the week. Comfortable farmhouse with spacious public rooms. Pleasant and accommodating staff. Good breakfasts, delicious varied dinners and packed lunches. Most Inspirational Moment Loved the Day 3 Sierra de Grazalema and Day 6 with the El Caminito del Rey and optional Ronda visit. The optional Seville tapas lunch organised and selected by Michael was exceptional. The tapas lunch on Day 2, while enjoying (and in some cases participating in) the Flintstone festival, was also delicious. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael was very approachable and informative, sharing his knowledge about the local area and people, the flora and fauna, tips for enjoying El Caminito del Rey and comprehensive and helpful arrangements or tips for the occasions where he was not present (Seville and Ronda). Advice for Potential Travellers If you are a keen photographer, the pace of the walks does not fully allow you to indulge in your hobby. There were a few occasions where I paused to take photos, only to see the group disappearing round a bend some way ahead. However, it was always possible to catch up at the intermediate rest stops. The optional visits to Seville Alcazar, the Seville Tapas lunch and Ronda were very enjoyable and worthwhile. Tell Michael if you would also like to visit Seville Cathedral. We had a few mosquitos in our room in spite of the dry heat, so bring some insect repellent. Worth looking at suggestions from earlier reviews on coffee, electrical points etc which I found useful. Suggestions A full length mirror somewhere in the hotel public areas and a good light over the bathroom mirror would be good!

TDS 240330 Beautiful scenery, excellent company, delicious wholesome local food, plenty of exercise – everything I look for in an exodus holiday. Most Inspirational Moment On the first day we had unseasonal cold weather with very heavy rain. We nevertheless walked up a mountain through an amazing oak rainforest. Much greener than I expected, it was magical and the rain somehow enhanced the excitement. Thoughts on Group Leader The leader, Michael Newcomb, was excellent. Very clear with information and adaptable to the circumstances as you would hope for. Always going the extra mile. Keen to be a positive part of the local community. Above all Mike was absolutely passionate about his interest in local wildlife, land management and food production, history etc and in sharing this with the group. And good company. Advice for Potential Travellers Come on this holiday. Suggestions I am totally satisfied with the hol. However I went to Aitana last year and that was a level 4. This holiday felt more like a level 3 in comparison.

Amelia Henriot   -  Traveled, March 2024

Good variation day-to-day The farmhouse rooms were fairly basic but were clean and cosy. The dinners were delicious. Good balance of walking and visiting on this trip. It was also nice to start/end walks in the little village coffee shops. Most Inspirational Moment Crossing the bridge at the end of el Caminito del Rey (Chorro Gorge) and the Grazalema Natural Park Thoughts on Group Leader Whilst Mike was very knowledgeable, engaging and fun, the moment things were not going to plan his attitude changed quite quickly. Some group members picked up on this and it put them off approaching him for anything throughout the trip. Poor time management on one of the walks, led to the group being rushed which wasn't ideal after weeks of torrential rain and very slippery terrain. Advice for Potential Travellers Although we had pretty landscapes during the walks (olive groves, mountains) on some occasions it resembled the British countryside, so if you're looking for a trip with stunning scenery at every corner, this isn't it. Optional afternoon in Rhonda was fab, we recommend going! Having done several exodus trips before, whilst there were a couple of level 4 moments, the rest of the walks were more a level 3. Suggestions Heating / hot water stopped working a couple of times, we were told it's a recurring issue. Would be good if it was properly fixed for future groups. The staff were very accommodating... Filip drove us to the village for lunch on our first full day as there was heavy rain & some of us decided not to walk. He also helped me arrange drinks, nibbles and a fantastic birthday cake for my mothers birthday. We were also lucky to have such a lovely group!

Walking in Andalusia Lovely trip – great walking combined with fascinating landscape, wildlife, history and geology. Very varied, from rugged Rocky Mountains to verdant forests and the city of Seville with a super bunch of people. Most Inspirational Moment Funnily enough, the first days walking in atrocious weather ( I thought we were still in England!) where we nearly made it up the first mountain but had to abort not far from the summit - a very sensible decision from Mike - which we all agreed with. Thoughts on Group Leader Superb. Mike/Miguel was a very passionate and committed leader. Always eager to help and make our trip as fab as possible. Extremely knowledgeable on Andalusian wildlife, culture, history and geology. Advice for Potential Travellers Go on this trip!

Excellent holiday Well planned walks and visits. Good accommodation – especially the food, which was top quality, well presented, and catered very well for special requirements. Most Inspirational Moment No single one - lots of inspiring scenery Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent - Michael went well beyond what I expected Advice for Potential Travellers Walk grading - this grade 2 is nearer a grade 3 than a 1. Suggestions The rooms would be even better with a little money spent on more electric sockets - I had to move my bedside chest out to gain access to a single socket, to charge a phone and camera, and to use the bedside light.

John Cartwright   -  Traveled, January 2024

Walking in Andalucia - First Group of 2024 A really enjoyable holiday despite the potential for disruption caused by the farmers’ road blocks, deftly avoided by Michael, our very knowledgable guide, and his network of ‘spies’. A good variety of walks, nicely paced to accommodate the mixed ability within the group. The day off in Sevilla is a must, as is the optional trip to Ronda. As an add-on consider exploring Malaga, if you’ve not been before. It’s well worth the effort, and if slotted in before the walking begins, as I did, gently eases you into holiday mode. Most Inspirational Moment Everybody raves about the Caminito del Rey - it is spectacular, but a bit too processional for my liking - a bit like attending a 'Bob the Builder' sponsored walk (everyone has to wear blue protective hats). For me the best walk was the trip into the Grazalema mountains. Slightly more challenging underfoot maybe, but well worth the effort. Due to the re-arrangement of itinerary caused by the farmers' shenanigans it was the last walk of the holiday, and it was a fitting end to a great week. I just wish the whole group could have witnessed it - by then covid had cruelly split us into positives and negatives! Thoughts on Group Leader This is my third walking holiday in Spain, and every leader has been passionate about their neck of the woods. And Michael is no exception. He really tried hard, and succeeded, in overcoming everything that was thrown at us during the week. Algamitas, the neighbouring village, is not a tourist hot spot (thank God), but Michael has built up good relations with the locals. We had coffees in the village cafes at the beginning of two of our walks. His knowledge of the local fauna and flora is impressive, and his enthusiasm for it is infectious. He also gave us top tips of where to visit in Sevilla, and organised a really nice tapas lunch too. Advice for Potential Travellers If travelling in the Winter months, make sure that your gear is up to scratch. We had a good downpour on the first day, fortunately after we'd had our tapas lunch, and quite a lot of us had leaky kit by the time we got back to the hotel! Suggestions There is a pool, and yes it is cold. But a couple of us did tentatively go in for a quick dip, and found it both invigorating and rejuvenating, in the loosest sense of the word.

Cortinho Rosario Not a grade 2 walking holiday, more like 3/4. Cortinho Rosario is for sale at EUR 850,000. Day visits to Seville and Camanito del Rey were fine otherwise just walking in olive groves. Most Inspirational Moment Camanito del Rey Thoughts on Group Leader Michael was first class but needs to be reminded the group proceeds at the speed of the slowest. Otherwise there will be a fatality sooner or later.

Christmas 2023 Walking in Andalucia Another fantastic holiday with Exodus with so much variety during the week walking and exploring in the Andalusian region of Spain with a superb leader Michael and a good day off spent in Seville. Stayed in a wonderful farmhouse with great hosts and food. A gem of a holiday. Most Inspirational Moment Christmas Day walking in the Grazalema mountains with spectacular views and a truly outstanding area with so much ecology to take in. A truly breathtaking Experience shared with the group and leader. Secondly despite the crowds El Chorro gorge was a wonderful experience. Finally, really enjoyed walking from the Cortijo Rosario across all the olive farmland with amazing views and a lovely tapas lunch on one of the days. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael, a truly lovely person with so much local knowledge and passion for the surrounding environment. So helpful throughout the entire week and often went above and beyond to ensure we had a good trip and even planned our day off in Saville ensuring we made the most of the time experiencing the best spots to visit in the city with everything from start to finish running like clock work. Advice for Potential Travellers Do visit Ronda on the optional afternoon activity to carry out as a very interesting place to visit. Suggestions A general point for Exodus - I have been away on other trips with other companies and we had a what’s app group set up prior to departure. I think this would be very beneficial in case of flight delays or for any general questions specific to the trip ahead concerning what to take specific to the trip. Would like Exodus to consider adding this option for the future.

A super week in Andalusia This was a great centre based walking holiday in the heart of rural Andalusia which also included a day trip to Seville. The guide was excellent and the accommodation was very relaxing with excellent hosts providing some fantastic meals. Most Inspirational Moment There were many highlights but for me it was the variety of the walks as well as the chance to visit Seville. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael (Miguel) was excellent. He has a passion for the natural environment and was able to provide lots of knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area. Advice for Potential Travellers Although not on the itinerary, the walk on the Thursday of the week finished at lunchtime so for those interested, our guide organised for some of the group to visit Ronda. Suggestions There is a well stocked honesty bar at the accommodation as well as free tea/coffee and biscuits!

Outstanding This was our second time on this trip and won’t be the last. The second time we returned with 3 friends. My husband is registered blind but has some residual vision which, with guidance, can allow him to take part. Michael is an outstanding leader who plans meticulously and anticipates any problems. We were part of a full group of 15 and had the benefit of Pat as an additional, exceptional leader. We cannot thank them enough for their support, kindness and empathy. They make this the best experience anyone could wish for . The walks are varied and interesting. Michael and Pat have brilliant local knowledge and insight. Cortijo Rosario is a comfortable farmhouse with outdoor pool, exceptional food and stunning views. Most Inspirational Moment The National park is so quiet and beautiful and unspoilt. Caminito del Rey is fabulous but much more touristy. Thoughts on Group Leader I mentioned Michael and Pat in the summary. Michael has extensive knowledge of flora and fauna, local and Algamitas where he has lived for many years. He inspires interest in the environment. He plans carefully and adapts routines around changes in weather etc. Pat is tireless and supported us all at various times throughout the week. He clearly enjoys the work and the company of other people. His empathy and understanding ensured my husband got the very best from this trip. These leaders are a real asset to Exodus Advice for Potential Travellers Read the trip notes carefully. It was unseasonably hot when we were there so make sure you have hats( especially that can be filled with water to douse your head) Room 3 is lovely as there is a balcony. The other rooms have fans but are very hot in hot weather. Suggestions Be patient at the start and end of the holiday. You can have lengthy waits for others to arrive or have a long wait leaving. I think Exodus could plan and coordinate the arrival and departure of local flights better.

Excellent trip (TDS 230617) An excellent reminder of the beauty and contrasts of Andalucia. Each day is different. Based at the lovely Cortijo made everything so easy. Simple but comfortable rooms, a lovely small pool at the end of each day and the friendliest service from Joke and Cartouche. They create a relaxed but efficient mood – and top quality food at the end of each day. But the biggest credit goes to Michael – undoubtedly the best guide I have experienced. The schedule means there is always time to relax in the pool followed by a drink before dinner. Most Inspirational Moment So many great moments. Walking the Caminito way, spotting birds of prey and ibex high in the Grazalema national park, the Alcazar in Seville followed by rooftop cocktails, relaxed evenings over dinner on the terrace.... Thoughts on Group Leader Michael Newcomb is exceptional. HIs knowledge of the region is exemplary - he gave us just the right amount of information on the culture, farming, birdlife, geography, food, and so much more. He is absolutely professional and his long experience of guiding mixed groups meant he was able to keep us interested and on track, giving us flexibility whilst ensuring we stuck to the schedule. He's also good fun. For our free time, he prepared notes and sent links to places to visit as well as pre-booking things for us so everything felt very easy. It's possible to drift through the week without having to make a decision about anything except what to get from the (well stocked) honesty bar in the Cortijo. Advice for Potential Travellers Just go. Worth every moment. Listen to Michael (especially around how much water to carry!) and you'll have a fantastic time. This was a level 2 holiday and the grade is about right for the trip. You can get away with good walking trainers on most days but light weight walking boots are best on a couple of trickier bits of terrain. Suggestions There are some walking poles available so you don't need to struggle with those in your luggage.

TDS 2300520 Lovely walks in the olive groves of the Andalusian foothills with a spectacular walk down the gorge at the Walk of the Kings at Caminito del Ray. Fantastic guide whose knowledge of all things fauna, ornithogical, geological and historic was as impressive as it was compelling. Great organiser. The 14 person team of ramblers gelled immediately and made the week very special. A wonderful adventure. Most Inspirational Moment Caminito del Rey Thoughts on Group Leader Great. Organised everything superbly and great source of information thoughout all the walks and trips to Seville/Ronda. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared for the rainy days and plenty of mud across the Olive groves. All part or the adventure. Suggestions Team at the farm house were excellent hosts. Meals and lunches were great.

Well organised as ever 13/05/2023 Thoroughly enjoyable and well organised as ever. Marvellous countryside with great walking, strenuous but not too hard. Lovely rural setting in the heart of olive growing country in Andalucia, 1 1/2 hr drive from Malaga. Micheal was an excellent guide, well informed and thoughtful about the needs of the group. It’s obviously a trip that’s been run many time as it works like clockwork. Accommodation good but the food not really what I’d have expected. I’d have liked a bit more variation at breakfast and something more locally flavoured in the evening; a choice of food and especially wine would have been appreciated. Transport worked very well.

Wonderful Walking in Andalucia It was a very enjoyable week, almost too hot to walk with temperatures in the mid 30s most days, but the guide was very careful that we stayed safe in these temperatures. The walks were varied and interesting – our favourites were Day 3 (walk in the Sierra de Grazelma) and Day 6 (El Chorro gorge and walk El Caminito del Rey). The optional Sunday lunch tapas on Day 2 in Villanueva de San Juan was excellent and it was great to see the locals out for their lunch too. The hotel was excellent, beautiful location with stunning views. It was well-maintained, clean and we had a lovely room with a balcony. The dinners were delicious, especially the last night-paella; the lunchtime baguettes were also excellent. The hotel was very good catering for our dietary requirements. It was lovely to return to the peace of the hotel (and the pool) at the end of every walk. The day in Seville was brilliant, with several optional extras offered (Alcazar tickets, a flamenco show and a tapas lunch), but there was no pressure to join any of these activities and you could do your own thing if you wanted. I would recommened this holiday to other Leisurely/Moderate walkers Most Inspirational Moment Walking the El Caminito del Rey...... The views of the spectacular gorge, seeing parts of the old path made of railway sleepers and concrete, seeing a train on the viaduct on the opposite side, the glass-floored corner, the suspension bridge, etc, etc. Thoughts on Group Leader Very knowledgeable and passionate about Andalucia, full of information ranging from local flora and fauna to castles and history. Passionate about walking, but ensured we were all safe in the extreme heat. Arranged meetings at sensible times, keeping us informed about the next day's activities and writing details on a white board at the hotel in case we forgot. Not mentioning going home until the end of Day 7! Exceptionally helpful e.g. booking meals, tickets, shows for us, collecting medication from the pharmacy and supporting other walkers in the pharmacy. And such a vibrant personality! Advice for Potential Travellers If you need one, take a hair dryer - there is one in the hotel, shared between 8 rooms, though this was not a problem the week we were there

First Exodus Travels adventure - not the last! This trip was an excellent introduction to Exodus travel itineraries, and to southern Spain. Most Inspirational Moment Finally getting to the top of a long hill and being encouraged with a "well done"! The hikes were challenging but the pace made them very doable. Thoughts on Group Leader There are not enough superlatives to describe Michael, our guide for the week I was in Andalucia. His knowledge of the area, the flora and fauna, food, terrain, and his wonderful sense of humor made for a fantastic trip. Michael would stop often while on our hikes to share interesting tidbits about something growing on the side of the road, or a bird, or just to remind everyone to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. He really goes above and beyond to ensure everyone is safe and having a great time, and he is so patient! Advice for Potential Travellers Take hiking poles if you are used to using them. I did not take any and did not miss them, nor need them. If traveling solo and the single room is available, book it. I was very fortunate and had a great roommate but wish i had a room to myself. Suggestions The farmhouse was rustic and charming. Our hosts were welcoming and accommodating. A very minor detail....if you are a coffee snob like me, know that the coffee is terrible at the farmhouse so either bring your own high quality instant or plan to drink tea.

Walking in Andalucia I very much enjoyed the holiday – the hotel was comfortable with good food, the walks were varied (in length, difficulty and scenery), and the day in Seville exceeded my expectations. It was a very well thought out itinerary, and all the staff we encountered were very helpful, especially our guide, Michael. We had a fairly large group of 14, but we all got on very well, helped by the friendliness of the local staff. We were lucky to get very good weather at the end of April (as hot as summer!), so we could make good use of the hotel pool, and eat our evening meals outside on the terrace. Most Inspirational Moment I enjoyed all the walks, but I think the most spectacular was the Camino del Rey along El Chorro gorge. The views were fantastic, and walking along the walkway strung up high on the side of the gorge was a real experience! The gardens of the Alcazar palace in Seville were very beautiful, and highly recommended. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael was great, he was enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area, as well as the history and geography. He knows the area very well, and is obviously well known and liked by the villagers, which made it much easier for the group to feel at home when visiting local bars and restaurants. Information about each day’s schedule was clear, we were always advised exactly what to take and what time to leave and a guide time for return. Advice for Potential Travellers Michael was able to organise several things which are listed as optional - the tapas lunch, a suggested itinerary in Seville and a trip to Ronda. I’d advise taking him up on these options, the tapas lunch was fabulous, and the visits and meal in Seville were made so much easier by the advance bookings. I’ve found previously that it can be very difficult to find a decent meal for yourself in a new city, and it can waste a lot of time deciding for yourself where to go and what to do. Suggestions I’d highly recommend this holiday.

Fabulous holiday We very much enjoyed this holiday, due to the perfect combination of good walks, great company from our sociable group, an excellent leader and the lovely Cortijo to stay in (exclusive to Exodus). Highlights included the Sierra de Grazalema scenery, the white village of Sentenil with its cliff houses and kestrels, and the Caminito del Rey. After the walks we usually stopped at a bar with view for refreshment, and could swim in the pool, or sit comfortably outside in the shade, once returning to the Cortijo, which was very homely. It was nice to have an honesty bar and to be able to make our own hot and cold drinks at any time. The Cortijo catered well for our dieteryneeds. Most Inspirational Moment The mountain views, the village of Sentenil, dinner on the lodge's patio with the views, learning from our expert guide, chatting and laughing with our fellow travellers. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael was a wonderful leader, being extremely knowledgable and passionate about Andalucia and the environment. He frequently stopped on the walks to point out plants and flowers and explained how they were used for food, medicine and farming. He was also an expert birdwatcher - we saw Griffin vultures, glimpses of eagles, bee-eaters and others. Michael's background from living extensively in both England and Spain meant he was able to explain the culture and differences from our perspective, and also to join in with our sense of humour. He was very proactive in organising walks and trips, and looked after us very well.

Walking in Andalucia We have just returned from this excellent trip and can highly recommend it. It is good value for money and provides an excellent insight into the region. There are opportunities to explore the region away from the touristy areas as well as a chance to see Seville, Setenil and Ronda. We were part of a lovely group that bonded well and made the whole experience even more worthwhile. Most Inspirational Moment It was lovely to walk in such an unspoilt region serenaded by nightingales and hoopoes calling in the woodlands. Watching griffon vultures effortlessly circling in cloudless, blue skies was magnificent. Thoughts on Group Leader Michael is an excellent leader with encyclopaedic knowledge of the history, geography, flora and fauna of the region. His enthusiasm is infectious. He has a great sense of humour and he is thoroughly entertaining. Michael is also attentive and caring of the group and keen to provide information and advice. He is clearly proud of his Spanish heritage but has the added advantage of having an English background as well. Michael is a real asset to Exodus and I will most definitely be voting for him in the annual leader awards. Advice for Potential Travellers Take the opportunity to visit Ronda if at all possible. If you usually use walking poles, these are a good idea, though not essential.
