Trip For You
This trip is rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate) and classified Road. For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us. Nine days of cycling (including one optional ride)Average 43mi (70km) per day90 percent vehicle support Terrain and route: Road surfaces are mostly well paved. The route is generally flat with some undulation with the exception of Dalat and the Hai Van Pass. Vietnam can be very hot and humid, which can make cycling more demanding at times, but rests and water are readily available. You should be comfortable riding in traffic during parts of the itinerary. This is a busy trip that involves early departures from hotels on cycling days; anyone not wanting to cycle all day can use the support vehicle. Please be advised, that on any of the cycling days, if your leader feels the itinerary is running behind schedule and has concerns about arriving at the hotel at an appropriate time, they may ask some or all members of the group to finish their riding for the day and transfer to the support vehicle. This will ensure the group still arrives on schedule around the approximate expected arrival times communicated to the group in your daily briefings with your leader.
Group Description
An experienced cycling tour leader will accompany all groups from start to finish. A bike mechanic will assist the tour leader, and local guides will step in at various sights.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, nine lunches and one dinner are included. Thanks to the tropical climate, the long coast and the gigantic range of mountains, Vietnam is blessed with numerous varieties of culinary offerings and consequently maintains its reputation as one of the healthiest cuisines in the world that still packs a punch with delicious, fresh and fiery flavours. Vietnamese food relies on fresh fish, vegetables, rice and a myriad of verdant herbs and spices; lemongrass, ginger, basil and lime all play an important role in the cuisine. The Chinese and French influence is felt throughout the country where you are just as likely to be offered a banh mi (stuffed baguette) as you are a hot steaming bowl of pho (noodle soup). Each dish is prepared with the Asian principle of Wu Xing in mind (the five elements); meaning that the perfect combination of spicy, sour, bitter, salty and sweet is the ultimate aim. Be sure to also seek out the national beverages; Vietnamese coffee is served iced and sweet with condensed milk, a real sugar and caffeine hit, and beer hoi (local beer, brewed daily) is served on most street corners in the north out of large plastic jugs that are perfect for sharing. Food is cheap in Vietnam and you can generally avoid the spicier food if you wish. Western food is readily available almost everywhere. Vegetarians are well catered for but please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note that in South East Asia the availability of certain specialised products for restricted diets, eg gluten-free or dairy-free, is minimal or non-existent and we strongly recommend you bring these specialised dietary items from home. You may find it beneficial to bring ‘cycling snacks’ with you from home if you have high-energy bars or gels that you like to use during a ride. For those who wish to contribute, a kitty is normally arranged – fresh fruit, nuts, biscuits and local snacks are all provided from the snacking kitty along with homemade lemonade if the season is right.
Transportation
Throughout the tour, we use a private coach/minibus, which will be quite comfortable, usually with air-conditioning. There are a couple of long driving days on this trip (up to six hours). Road conditions are generally good and improving all the time in Vietnam, however traffic can slow progress in the main cities. The trains are normally on time, but you may experience delays and departure times can change without notice. Boats are used at various points in the itinerary; these are nearly always private, and vary from converted trawlers to small riverboats. The coach will accompany the riders all the time, allowing you substantial flexibility to cycle as much or as little as you like, plus a support truck for the bikes and baggage. Tet Holiday Period (Vietnamese New Year) During the Tet holiday period, 28 January to 3 February 2025 and 16-21 February 2026, our itinerary is subject to minor change as, despite booking hotels and trains in advance, rooms and seats are difficult to obtain during this busy festive period when people are travelling home to celebrate with their families. It is unlikely that changes will occur, but if required, suitable alternative premium accommodation will be used.
Joining Instructions
Key information Recommended arrival time: You can arrive at any time today. There will be a welcome briefing in the evening, but if you miss it the leader will update you separately Airport: Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) Getting to the start hotel The start hotel is approximately 25 minutes’ drive from the airport. Exodus provides free arrival transfers to the start hotel from the airport for all customers. Catching your return flight Exodus provides free departure transfers for all customers to Hanoi Airport (HAN) from the end hotel. Please note, unless specified otherwise, the transfers will be to the start (or pre-tour) hotel and from the end (or post-tour) hotel and will be on the date on which the tour starts/ends; transfers to other hotels in the same city and/or on different dates may attract an extra charge. Transfers should be booked with your sales representative at least two weeks before the tour starts.
Weather Information
The weather will be hot and humid throughout with temperatures during the day usually 28C-34C (82F-93F). It is only a little cooler at night. There is quite a range of seasons between the north and the south: the south up to Hue has a distinct dry season between December to April and then a rainy season from May to November when it tends to come in short heavy bursts with bright sunshine in between. Hanoi is cool in autumn, and even gets chilly between November and February (with drizzly rain). There is no ideal time to visit Vietnam; it is quite pleasant at any time of year, though due to the shape of the country it is unlikely the weather will ever be perfect for the entire duration of any trip. Please be aware that the boat trip on Ha Long Bay can be subject to short-notice change if certain adverse weather conditions develop during your trip. These could occur all year round, but especially in monsoon season (from October to April). Boat trips on Ha Long Bay are governed by the local authorities who are authorised to make appropriate safety decisions. If your Ha Long Bay trip is affected by adverse weather, this could either result in a reduced excursion on Ha Long Bay for your group, or less likely, the need to re-arrange the itinerary if it is not possible at all to go out on Ha Long Bay. While this is not a frequent occurrence, our local team and leaders are well equipped to handle such situations and have long offered appropriate options to groups in the instances where this may occur. If you go to Cambodia for the Angkor Wat extension, the weather will be hot and humid all year round. The dry season is late October to May and the monsoon is normally between May and October; though there is an obvious transitional time between those settled periods. The dry season is as it sounds, with hot days and generally clear skies, though you can expect the odd shower. The monsoon is characterised by short, sharp bursts of rain and is generally overcast all day though this does not detract from the enjoyment of the place; you just need to take an umbrella or buy a cheap local poncho.
Spending Money
You will need about 4.6m-6.2m Vietnamese dong (US$195-US$260) for meals not included, which will allow you to eat well. Apart from the food, you should allow money to cover soft drinks (more if you like beer/alcohol) and souvenirs. Most groups also find it useful to operate a snacks kitty system to buy snacks and drinks for the group on the cycling days. If the group would like the leader to arrange this, the suggested amount is around 478,000- 750,000 dong (US$20-US$30) per person depending on the group size. Optional excursions: Hoi An — Tu Bon River boat trip 170,000 dong (US$7) — Marble Mountain entry approximately 24,000 dong (US$1) — My Son excursion from 265,000 dong (US$11) depending upon numbers
Tipping
Tipping is part of the culture in Vietnam. However, it can often be an awkward affair, especially when you’re in an unfamiliar country. As such, your tour leader will arrange and look after a tipping kitty, which is used to tip drivers, hotel staff, on boats and other support staff (optional excursions and restaurant tipping is not included in the tipping kitty). Your leader will suggest how much to contribute, but it is usually approximately 2m dong (US$87) per person. At any time during the trip, your tour leader will happily show you an account of how the kitty is being distributed. In addition (entirely at your discretion), a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated if you are happy with the service you have received. As a guideline we recommend a contribution of 140,000 dong (US$6) per day for your leader as a reasonable starting point. The ‘tipping kitty’ explained above is entirely separate from any contribution to the tour leader. Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work.

Accommodation

Hotels, resort, boat and sleeper train
The accommodation on this trip is wonderfully varied. We stay in unique hotels (mostly three/four-star) for nine nights and a laid-back tropical island resort for two nights. We also spend one night on a junk-style boat cruising Ha Long Bay and, finally, have one night on the Reunification Express, a sleeper train that takes us from Hue to Hanoi. Below are a few of the standout accommodations on this trip: Whale Island Resort Our two-night stay on Whale Island is regarded as a highlight for many, though it is relatively basic. We stay in thatched bamboo bungalows, each with mosquito nets, fans and private bathrooms. The simplicity of island life and a secluded spot makes it idyllic, but be prepared for it to be a bit different to the hotels used for the rest of the trip. Ha Long Bay cruise Board a traditional junk-style boat to cruise among the magnificent limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. Each of the twin-share cabins has air conditioning and a window out to sea, while the boat has a rooftop deck with chairs – this is where most of our travellers tend to gather for views over the bay. There’s also a dining room with glass windows so we can continue to admire this extraordinary landscape during lunch and dinner.   Reunification Express Our sleeper train takes us from Hue to Hanoi – a classic journey in this part of the world. It’s an essential part of the tour, linking two special destinations without resorting to flying or a lengthy coach trip. However, trains in Vietnam are not luxurious and it’s best to come prepared to maximise your experience – we’ve found extra warm layers to combat the air conditioning and ear plugs can provide a little more comfort! We stay in soft-bed berths, usually four passengers per berth. The trains here are safe but, as with any trip, we recommend you keep valuables with you. Snacks are normally offered on board and most trains have Western-style facilities, but some are equipped with squat toilets. Worth knowing Single supplements are available (on request) but only for 11 nights of the trip (hotel/resort nights). Please advise your sales representative at the time of booking if you would like to request a single supplement. The accommodation listed in each location on the day-to-day itinerary are the standard hotels used. However, there may be some departures where groups stay at similar hotels of the same standard and quality.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is an exciting and absorbing city where bicycles battle with trucks and temples stand defiantly alongside modern developments. Devastated by the Vietnam War, Ho Chi Minh City is now a bustling free market city where anything goes. The Ben Thanh Market and Notre Dame Cathedral are within easy walking distance and are highly recommended. This evening there will be a welcome briefing with your leader followed by an optional group dinner at a local restaurant. Accommodation: Central Park Saigon Hotel (or similar)

2
Day 2: Transfer out of the city; cycle to the Cu Chi tunnels

This morning we drive out of the city, before riding to the Cu Chi tunnels. This offers a great introduction to cycling in Vietnam and a chance to fine-tune the bikes. The tunnels were Viet Cong sanctuaries, used by the guerrillas as living quarters and escape routes. The network covers three levels and approximately 149mi (240km) of tunnels. Some parts have been widened for tourists, but the tunnels were originally very narrow and it is still necessary to crawl on hands and knees. If you prefer not to visit the tunnels you can have an unguided free day in Ho Chi Minh City. Places of interest include the Emperor of Jade and Giac Lam pagodas, the former Presidential Palace (now the Reunification Hall), Ben Thanh market and the War Remnants Museum. Accommodation: Central Park Saigon Hotel (or similar)

3
Day 3: Cycle towards the coast and drive to Mui Ne

After an early breakfast we head out of Ho Chi Minh City by bus and then start cycling towards the coast. We hit the backroads and head through tropical fruit and rubber plantations also passing small fishing villages as we make our way closer to the coast finishing our ride in time for lunch. We then transfer approximately three hours to Mui Ne, a tranquil white-sand beach where we can witness our first sunset over the East Sea. We spend four to five hours on the bus today. Accommodation: Ocean Dunes Resort (or similar)

4
Day 4: Cycle to Dalat in the central highlands

We cycle towards Dalat; the route is undulating with occasional climbs. Along the way we pass coffee and tea plantations, flower gardens and pine forests as we reach higher altitude. We rejoin the bus before the road climbs steeply to the mountain town of Dalat. We spend approximately 3hr 30min on the bus today. Dalat is a pleasant hill station, formerly known as Le Petit Paris, and has been described as the most beautiful town in Vietnam. It was favoured by the French for its climate, and is now a popular honeymoon resort for the Vietnamese. Accommodation: La Sapinette Hotel (or similar)

5
Day 5: Cycle through Bidoup National Park; to the coast and boat transfer to Whale Island

Today's ride is predominantly undulating and approximately 19mi (30km) downhill through pine forests and paddy fields as we descend nearly 4,921ft (1,500m) and travel through Bidoup Ba National Park. This area is home to rare pine forests, plus small villages inhabited by the ethnic minority people of the central highlands. Once we arrive at the coast, we head by bus (approximately 90 minutes) to the coast near Nha Trang before boarding a boat to our tropical island retreat of Whale Island for the next two nights. Today you can cycle up to 55.9mi (90km) according to preference. Accommodation: Whale Island Resort (or similar)

6
Day 6: Cruise around islands with seafood lunch and snorkelling

Today we relax and unwind. We join a boat trip in the morning for a spot of snorkelling and sea swimming before a seafood lunch. In the afternoon, you have the option to visit a local fishing village, see the Whale temple or walk around the island to the viewpoint for a 360-degree view of the mountainous coastline and the surrounding coves and white-sand beaches. Accommodation: Whale Island Resort (or similar)

7
Day 7: Coastal ride to Quy Nhon

We set off early in the morning and first take a short transfer from Whale Island through Dai Lanh and Ca Pass before setting off on our bikes at Vung Ro Bay, where we ride along the coast to Tuy Hoa and O Loan Lagoon to Chi Thanh. In Chi Thanh, we stop for lunch and a short rest before continuing to La Hai where we complete our longest ride of the trip (62.2mi/100km). From La Hai, we then transfer one hour to our hotel in Quy Nhon. We spend approximately two hours on the bus today. Accommodation: Seagull Quy Nhon Hotel (or similar)

8
Day 8: Further coastal ride stopping en route at dunes; then transfer to Hoi An

Leaving Quy Nhon, we travel through a new economic zone over the Thi Nai peninsula and Nhon Hoi Bridge, the longest sea bridge in Vietnam. Getting off our bikes, we visit a market, where it's not unusual to be pulled aside for a photo as this part of the country does not see many western tourists. The coastline features secluded bays, dunes and beaches with colourful fishing boats bobbing on the East Sea. We cycle until we arrive at Phu Ly and then drive to Hoi An. If time permits, we will cycle the last 7mi (12km) once we turn off Highway 1 into Hoi An. Hoi An, the original European trading port in Vietnam dating back to the mid-16th century is now a living museum, with attractive wooden merchants houses and pagoda-style temples with Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and European architectural influences. It is also a marvellous place to wander around and enjoy the thriving riverside market. We spend two nights in Hoi An, which is also a fantastic place to buy local art or have some clothes tailor-made for you. It's best to bring a picture or a sample of what you want made. We spend approximately six hours on the bus today. Accommodation: Hoi An Sincerity Hotel & Spa (or similar)

9
Day 9: Sightseeing in Hoi An; free afternoon

This morning we take a guided walking tour of Hoi An to explore some of the structures of historical significance in the Old Town, including bridges, temples, wells and houses. Those less interested in architecture can cycle the 3mi (5km) to the lovely Cua Dai beach or to the Marble Mountains, which are 11.8mi (19km) from town. These five marble hills, formerly islands, contain many caves, some of which were used as Buddhist (and Viet Cong) sanctuaries. Also nearby is My Khe beach, a R&R spot for US troops in the war, and Da Nang, where there is a Cham Museum, which despite being in poor condition, is very interesting. It is also possible to visit My Son, one of the most important Cham temple sites in Vietnam where Cham kings were buried as early as the fourth century. Although wartime bombing has destroyed much of the site, there are several interesting stone towers and sanctuaries. Accommodation: Hoi An Sincerity Hotel & Spa (or similar)

10
Day 10: Ride over the spectacular Hai Van Pass; cycle and drive on to Hue

Today we turn north again for the drive/cycle to Hue. The route traverses over the spectacular Hai Van Pass – the Pass of the Ocean Clouds. The views are stunning, though those who prefer to avoid the 1,903ft (580m) climb can always take a lift in the support vehicle. Once at the top it will all seem worth it as you plummet back to the ocean, then continue through small villages and timeless rural scenes to the outskirts of Hue, from where we transfer to our city centre hotel. We spend about 2hr 30min on the bus today. Accommodation: Park View Hotel (or similar)

11
Day 11: Explore Hue and surroundings by bike and boat; overnight train to Hanoi

Hue is often claimed to be the cultural and historic centre of Vietnam and there is plenty to see. We take a guided tour of the city and surrounding tombs. The most memorable site is the citadel, with walls 6mi (10km) in length: inside are the palaces and halls of the Mandarins, and the remains of the Forbidden Purple City, where only the emperor and his eunuchs and concubines were allowed. We then take a boat along the Perfume River to the elaborate tombs of the Nguyen emperors, who ruled Vietnam from Hue. Tu Duc's Tomb is very elaborate and set in beautiful gardens. Along the way we will visit the Thien Mu Pagoda, which has a centre for anti-government protests in the early 1960s. It also houses the Austin car that transported a monk, Thich Quang Duc, to Saigon in 1963 where he burned himself in protest against the president. The photograph of his self-immolation was printed in newspapers around the world. In the afternoon we will board the Reunification Express for the overnight ride to Hanoi, 428mi (688km) to the north. Accommodation: Overnight train

12
Day 12: Arrive Hanoi; drive to Ha Long Bay; board boat and cruise/kayak among spectacular limestone formations

We usually arrive in Hanoi in the early morning and stop for a local breakfast and a stretch of the legs, before we are met by our bus for an approximate four-hour drive to Ha Long Bay. This is one of the most beautiful sights in South East Asia with around 3,000 limestone peaks rising directly from the clear emerald sea. We cruise among this amazing karst scenery, stopping to kayak in the sea (weather permitting), allowing us to get to places inaccessible by boat and enjoy a seafood lunch on board. We overnight on board in twin share cabins with private facilities. Accommodation: overnight boat

13
Day 13: Further cruising in Ha Long Bay; return to Hanoi

Visit Me Cung cave and enjoy further time cruising the many islands of Ha Long Bay. We then return to Hanoi in the late afternoon. This charming city contains many beautiful old buildings and the atmosphere is completely different from that in Ho Chi Minh City, mainly due to the much more conservative nature of the northern Vietnamese. Also, unlike its industrial counterpart, the centre of Hanoi has a faded charm with broad tree-lined avenues dating from the French period, plus attractive lakes and pagodas. In the evening there is the option to enjoy a water puppet performance. Accommodation: Minasi Premium Hotel (or similar)

14
Day 14: End Hanoi

It’s been an unforgettable cycling adventure through Vietnam, but this morning marks the last breakfast of the tour. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on all that you’ve seen and achieved and, perhaps, to start planning your next big adventure.

Hotter Than The Sun Good points about my trip: The local organisation was very good. Our guide ‘G’ and the support staff provided an excellent service. With the exception of Whale Island and the overnight trail, the trip accommodation was excellent. Varied landscapes with a good mix of beaches, rice paddies and mountains. The equipment provided was of a good quality and well maintained, with very few mechanical issues for the group. Bad points about my trip: The trip notes did warn that ‘The weather will be hot and humid throughout’, but the heat and humidity was of another level, with 35-40 degrees c each day. Do not go on this trip unless you can tolerate cycling in extreme heat. 90% of the roads used were busy, with significant traffic. Drivers in Vietnam are very considerate, but you need to be confident riding in busy traffic to go on this trip. The lack of quiet back roads was a real disappointment. I have travelled in Thailand, Malaysia and Laos and in comparison the food in Vietnam was rather disappointing, being generally bland and reparative. As a vegetarian option were limited and I would strongly challenge the guidance from Exodus that ‘Vegetarians are well catered for’. If you are a vegetarian or vegan I do not recommend this trip. Overall the service from Malaysia Airlines was very poor, with an 11 hour delay to the group flight from Kuala Lumpur to London. Service on both flights from KUL to LHR was also poor. I recommend that you arrange your own flights to avoid Malaysia Airlines. Overall: An interesting time to visit Vietnam considering the rapid pace of change. However I cannot recommend this cycling holiday due to the extreme heat and busy roads. If you want to visit Vietnam with Exodus I recommend you book onto ‘Vietnam Adventure’ or ‘Trails of Vietnam’. Most Inspirational Moment Cycle through Bidoup National Park Thoughts on Group Leader The local organisation was very good. Our guide ‘G’ and the support staff provided an excellent service. Advice for Potential Travellers What to take recommendations: If you use SPD pedals I strongly recommend bringing them with you. Walking whilst in cycling shoes was very limited. The UV throughout was extremely strong, where due to the high levels of perspiration it was very difficult to reapply sun block. I therefore strongly recommend bringing with you a set of light coloured thin arm warmers to keep the sun off your arms whilst cycling and a long sleeved swimming top. There are sea urchins on a number of beaches. You therefore may want to bring a pair of beach shoes.

Awesome cycling adventure from Saigon to Hanoi A wonderful adventure cycling through mad traffic, long coastal roads, rice fields, quaint villages, hill climbs and descents. Ever changing scenery – an experience to remember forever. Most Inspirational Moment Entering the 100 Club (100kms in one day). Thoughts on Group Leader Hoang Trong Tung - fabulous leader. Advice for Potential Travellers Moderate fitness required. There is a 10km hill climb halfway through which tests stamina. The option of an e-bike to book for this tour. Suggestions This tour was professionally organised and supported by a knowledgeable and wonderful team of local drivers and mechanics. Our tour leader spoke great English and shared with us Vietnam’s history along the way. Would thoroughly recommend this tour for anyone who has a cycling passion.

Enjoyable despite the cycling This review is written in the context of being a regular cyclist and having cycled with Exodus “Coast to Coast India” and “Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama”. This trip definitely ranks third in that list. Vietnam is a long, thin country, with 1000+ miles from HCM to Hanoi – it is unclear on what basis the 320 cycling miles on this trip were chosen. Many days the routes are long and featureless, the riding punctuated by aggressive air horns from passing lorries. Some days felt like cycling for cycling sake – starting at a random point out of town, and finishing somewhere equally random. Long periods on the bus. That said the segments of cycling along quiet backroads, through traditional fishing villages etc was delightful. Days are full on – early breakfast and start and late arrivals into destinations leaving very limited chance to appreciate the towns and facilities. The stops at Whale Island, Hoi An were a welcome relief. The trip to Ha Long Bay at the end was superb. Most Inspirational Moment Cycling into Hue as the sun was going down through traditional backwaters. Thoughts on Group Leader Luang was excellent, well organised and all the evening meal recommendations were excellent. Perfect English and a mine of local information. Advice for Potential Travellers If you want to cycle 100km somewhere enjoyable and scenic - do one of the other Exodus trips ( or go to Wales or the Peak District). Book an extra day at the end in Hanoi and consider the optional Cambodia extension at the beginning. Suggestions It’s graded moderate - but in March, if you factor in the heat 35c+ and humidity, I would grade it higher. Cycling Vietnam Reply from Exodus Thank you for taking the time to review your cycling trip in Vietnam, Keith, and we were so pleased to read your comments about your tour leader, Luang. On the other hand, we regret that this tour did not reach the heights of your previous adventures with us, particularly concerning the routes. This is one of our longest-standing, best-selling cycling trips and is designed as an introduction to Vietnam by bike. It is generally very well received by our customers, evidenced by its current 4.8* average rating on our website. Vietnam is becoming increasingly popular as a destination, however, which has had a knock-on effect on the volume of vehicles on the roads. As the trip navigates from south to north and covers so much ground, main roads are unavoidable, but we will consider revising some of the routes if it becomes apparent that backroads are preferred. We recognise that this is a busy itinerary and that temperatures are warm year-round, which we try to describe in the trip notes, but as there is almost full vehicle support and two tour leaders, clients are welcome to sit out any stretches they do not want to join. It is with this in mind that we feel the currently activity level is accurate, although we are sorry if it was more challenged than you had anticipated. We welcome your feedback, as it will guide future decisions about this tour, and we hope that your experience in Vietnam does not discourage you from travelling with us again. Ground staff great, UK support poor We booked 2 trips to run together. Booking them intially was difficult as the agent couldn’t grasp what we were trying to do and kept quoting the wrong direction and got confused over airports. As a result we ended up flying from London as it was easiest for him to understand. Questions were left unanswered and at no time was it acknowldged that we were doing the 2 trips as one. The final hotel of the last trip was supposed to be the same as the first of this but in fact we had to move to a different hotel. Overall an good trip was let down by the UK support team. Most Inspirational Moment Hoi An Pass Thoughts on Group Leader Chi was good Advice for Potential Travellers Book your own flights

Good Morning Vietnam! An Amazing Experience We cannot recommend this trip highly enough to anyone who is looking for an activity-based holiday which provides the opportunity to experience a broad range of what Vietnam and its amazing people have to offer. We loved every minute and given the chance we would not hesitate to do it all over again. Most Inspirational Moment There were so many inspiring moments it is difficult to choose one, but if we had to, it would have to be completing the 10km ascent of Hai Van Pass and enjoying the incredible views on the way down. We came home and re-watched the Top Gear Vietnam Special for which this experience was a highlight for the presenters too. Thoughts on Group Leader Son Nguyen was incredible. He was super-organised and everything ran like clockwork. Having said this, we appreciate how much effort had been put in by Son and his team to make the whole trip run smoothly and to make the holiday such a wonderful experience. Advice for Potential Travellers Although the trip is rated as Moderate, the heat and humidity at the end of March made it, we would say, slightly more of a challenge. For anyone who lives, like us, in a part of the country with very few hills to practise on, a few spinning classes beforehand might be a good idea. Suggestions Someone had recommended to us to take a handlebar bag for the bikes and we found this to be very useful. Also, a bandana to wear under your cycle helmet improved comfort and provided some protection from the sun.

Loved this trip! This was an excellent trip! The scenery is beautiful, the activities are fun, and the support staff could not have been better. Most Inspirational Moment I think the most inspiring moment was the climb over the Hai Van Pass. It was very challenging, but we clapped and cheered as others finished the summit, making for a very rewarding experience. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader Loc Phan was excellent. He was friendly, helpful and very accommodating. I am a vegetarian and Loc was so helpful getting my meals coordinated. I also want to recognize the rest of our support team - the mechanic, the truck driver and the bus driver. They were so kind and helpful. They made sure we always had cold water and regular snacks, and the few small bike problems I had (squeaks and clicks - nothing serious) were always fixed the same day that I identified them. Advice for Potential Travellers Reminder that Vietnam can be hot an humid. If you are sensitive to the heat, check the weather before you book. Also, the first week in particular had some undulations, which may be challenging for beginner cyclists. Suggestions I shared the trip notes with a friend of mine who lived and worked in Vietnam when I booked. She said it looked excellent and covers many of the highlights of Vietnam. This is a great way for active tourists to explore the country.

Cycling Vietnam A well planned and co-ordinated itinerary that made great use of the time to show the variety of Vietnam Thoughts on Group Leader Son was excellent. I cannot think of any way in which he could have done more for our group. He was totally dedicated to making sure we were fully informed, well organised and relaxed throughout the trip, and he added so much with all the little extra bits of information and education he gave us. Further, the support team he had recruited worked so well together to give our group all the back up we needed. Advice for Potential Travellers If I was to take one extra thing in my luggage, it would be a small towel to use when we got on the coach after a hot day’s ride. If you possibly can, add an extra day or two at the end of the itinerary in order to see more of Hanoi. Suggestions This trip was a bit of a departure for me. I am used to doing my own organising and having the freedom to choose my own itinerary, so I was a bit concerned at being constrained and compromised by being in a group. I needn’t have worried. My own considerable experience of organising trips let me recognise that this was a particularly well put together itinerary, showing us a great variety of the landscapes of Vietnam. The balance of cycling versus downtime, length of active days and city versus country was just right. I wouldn’t alter any of it. This was my first trip with Exodus. I came home with an immediate action to check what else you have to offer.

Great way to see the real Vietnam This is a great way to see the ultra-friendly Vietnamese people go about their daily lives. We saw weddings, various foods being farmed, people carrying multiple double mattresses on mopeds and had children high fiving us as we cycled past or as they went past on scooters! It’s a fairly busy itinerary but we had a fabulous time on this trip. Most Inspirational Moment One of the most inspiring moments was probably getting to the top of the 600m climb on the Hai Van Pass. At that moment I felt like I could conquer anything! Having said that, the joy on children's faces as they waved us past was a daily inspiration! Thoughts on Group Leader Son was an exceptional leader. I can't think of anything he could have done better. His approach should be documented and used as a blueprint for others to follow. He genuinely loves his job and it shows in how he comes across to the group, tackling everything with a highly infectious sense of fun. His ability to get 18 cyclists safely round a roundabout or across a dual carriageway in rush hour using a whistle to tame the traffic was amazing. It's also the little things like always setting off at a steady pace to ensure the group is together and no-one feels rushed, under pressure or left behind. Despite the busy nature of the itinerary, Son was always keen to ensure that it should still feel like a holiday and our enjoyment was his always his priority. He was knowledgeable, passionate and meticulous in his approach. This was my first Exodus and first cycling holiday and Son has set a very high bar for what I expect from a group leader! Advice for Potential Travellers For people without much hair, take a thin beanie or something similar to protect your head from the sun and avoid getting cycle helmet patterned tan lines! Hydrate often, even between the hydration stops.

Cycling Vietnam Excellent trip Most Inspirational Moment Cycling through agricultural land Thoughts on Group Leader Son is very, very good at his job. His and his team's calm manner, unstinting hard work and generosity are why I will book with Exodus again in the future. Advice for Potential Travellers Be ready for the heat and humidity

Great holiday full of activity Vietnam is a beautiful country with the loveliest people. This is a busy trip with early mornings and jam-packed itinerary but I wouldn’t have liked to miss any of it. We were a nice, international group led by Lam, the best Exodus leader I’ve had so far! Most Inspirational Moment Cycling in 36 degree heat on a manual bike. Never thought I could finish it but I did! Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent, very enthusiastic and obviously passionate about his country. Also very experienced and always ready with anything (tips, suggestions, delicious fruits, insect repellent, alcohol gel) to make our experience even better. The support team were also great - we couldn't have done it without them. Advice for Potential Travellers E-bikes might be worth the upgrade Don't overpack, cheap laundry can be organised

Cycling Vietnam A very special trip! The trip from briefing in HCM to end in Hanoi was very enjoyable and very well organised. I felt looked after on and off the bike. Wonderful mix of rural Vietnam, busy places and tourist attractions . You always knew which way to go, rest stops were a joy. Lemonade, fruit and other treats to taste. We had mountain bikes rather than hybrids. They were lovely bikes and fabulous to ride. Most Inspirational Moment Hard to choose a best moment as there were so many for different reasons. Dalat downhill was phenomenal countryside. Thoughts on Group Leader Loc Phan was amazing and thoughtful. As was his team. We got to try many local fruits and foods. The team were really sweet, handed you a glass of lemonade and took the bike off you on a rest stop. Lunches were included and they were fabulous. Evening meal restaurants and other recommended places by Loc were all really good. It was a big group of 18 but oddly it felt smaller which was down to organisation. The bus we travelled in was spotless and comfortable. Advice for Potential Travellers Highly recommend. Holiday is full on. Days off the bike are perfectly timed and placed. Early starts with some days where you have to pack a smaller bag. We had booked 1 extra day in HCM and Hanoi to allow time to see these two cities. We did not manage to do a Mekong Delta tour which would have been nice if we had 2 additional days in HCM. You don't need to bring any snacks:) Suggestions I have given this 5 stars as the holiday was an amazing experience. Just a couple of points. Whale Island was lovely but I was, however, a little stressed at Whale Island as creatures could easily enter your rooms and we were warned that could happen. We are fine, thankfully. The exodus team in the uk is where the booking was made. They were not particularly helpful. They did not respond to emails and had to be chased repeatedly to respond to queries. It did spoil the start of the holiday.

Cycling in Vietnam Excellent trip with a good amount of cycling and touring. Loc was amazing, kept us fully informed. The whole team looked after us and the bikes. Most Inspirational Moment Descent from Dalat! 30km downhill through stunning scenery Thoughts on Group Leader Loc was amazing Advice for Potential Travellers Book it but there are long cycling days and it is hot! Look after each other, on and off the bike!

Amazing experience What a fantastic trip. Full of new experiences, very well organised. We were so well looked after, would definitely use this company again. You do need to be confident on a bike, some of the cycling is not for the faint hearted! There is a lot of traffic for some of the ride, but also small villages and serene countryside. Most Inspirational Moment I'd struggle to pick just one! It was all inspiring Thoughts on Group Leader LAM was amazing. His enthusiasm, his knowledge and his encouragement were so helpful. He and his team are the best!! Advice for Potential Travellers You do need to be confident on roads with traffic. Don't worry what's going on behind you. Just keep your eyes forward and keep moving! Suggestions The communication from this company has been very good from the outset.

Still reeling ! This was an action packed tour with not a moment lost, traversing a great selection of Vietnamese coutryside and towns. Each day was breakfast at six, cycle and bus via interesting sights to the next town, dinner, hotel (with a couple of two nighters and an eye-opening train sleeper). At times exhausting, which enhanced camaraderie with the rest of the group (six solos, six couples). The quality of the bikes and the provision of en-route refreshments was superb, as were the hotels. It was such a varied and full-on trip that I’ve come away with a head full of great memories and a pretty good knowledge of Vietnam. Most Inspirational Moment The local kids yelling Hello! and holding out their hands to be clapped as we cycled past. Thoughts on Group Leader When describing places we were visiting, Lam spoke passionately about his country, its people and history . His depth of knowledge and way of speaking was very engaging. He was patient and generous with his time to anyone who had a question or needed help. For example, on a tour of a temple he came over and we had a nice chat as we walked back to the group. Another day, I was waiting with the group as Lam went to find a missing member who was late returning from a temple. He came back chatting happily with the guy - I then realised that earlier he had retrieved me because I was late back, and I didn't even know! Advice for Potential Travellers Going solo was a slight concern for me but getting to know other group members was very easy. Suggestions I would prefer it if we had more of the quiet traffic-free roads for cycling, even if it meant more bus journey to get from A to B.

Amazing country. Group leader a star. Non stop trip with so many memories made. From villages and local markets to the chaos of the cities. Cycling tiring but great support and well balanced days to make it manageable. Most Inspirational Moment A personal moment demonstrating the kindness and generosity of the local people. Thoughts on Group Leader Faultless. Thank you so much Son for being out leader during the Lunar New Year. It would be like me working over Xmas and New Year and not seeing my family. But if you wished you were elsewhere, you didn't show it. You were the best humoured and professional group leader one could hope to have. Advice for Potential Travellers You have to want to experience Vietnam as it is. It's not a sanitised experience. It's the real deal. That means some meals are simple and some of the amenities are basic as times. I say this because you will read some negative reviews about this but it's all part of the trip and it's authenticity. The food is amazing and the people really welcoming. Go! Suggestions Organisation was superb. Thanks to the mechanic and driver. The fresh fruit at our rest points. The homemade lemonade.

Action packed holiday Excellent holiday with Lam as a fantastic experienced guide and 3 other helpers. Log days of cycling and coach journeys, excellent food and good company from around the world Most Inspirational Moment Getting to the top of Hai Van Pass and the rest of that very varied 100km cycling day Thoughts on Group Leader Lam was excellent, incredibly well organised, always cheerful and full of information. He was particularly helpful to a team member who fractured her ankle and spent most of the trip on the bus Advice for Potential Travellers This is a full on holiday with 12 hr days - breakfast at 6m, 7am start and not finishing til 5/6pm depending on th day. Not for the faint hearted or those who want a lie in. The heat of 34 in Ho Chi Min was a shock and along with the humidity made cycling tough. the temperature dropped as we headed north ad was around 10 in Hanoi. Suggestions I would say that this holiday should be graded at least 4. Some days we didn't have time to use the pool or see the town where we were staying eg Dhalat as we arrived too late and were too exhausted to head out. It may be sensible to shorten some days or give extra rest days. Th overnight train followed by 4hrs on the coach to get to Ha Long Bay seemed excessive without putting a rest break in.

An Enjoyable Journey of Discovery I knew very little about Vietnam before taking this trip, but I feel that it has given me a good understanding of the country, as well as an enjoyable experience. It helped that our fellow travellers were a group of likeable, diverse & interesting people, and our guide and his support team did a first-class job of looking after us. Most Inspirational Moment I find it hard to identify a single most inspiring moment , but the overall experience certainly was inspiring. Some beautiful scenery, friendly people, great food, some challenging cycling (and some fun descents), plus insights into the history, economy and the everyday lives of Vietnamese people. Thoughts on Group Leader Nam Nguyen was great! Each day would typically start with him saying "xin chào, xin chào, story time!" followed by an explanation of the day's itinerary and insights into Vietnamese life. He was friendly, organised and kept us safe and happy. Advice for Potential Travellers 1) Pack light - there were opportunities to get clothes laundered at reasonable prices whenever we stayed more than 1 night in the same place and we also successfully hand-washed our own cycle kit in hotel washbasins and it dried OK after rolling in a towel and being left in front of the air conditioning. We took far too much stuff with us, which was a nuisance when travelling on the sleeper train and when lugging it through the airports. 2) Choose flights carefully - we preferred to fly from a regional airport rather than Heathrow. Exodus offered us a few alternatives and we opted for night flights which we hoped would minimise jet-lag (they did). The downside, which we hadn't thought through properly, was that we arrived after the rest of the group and departed before them, thus missing out on time to explore the cities of Saigon and Hanoi. 3) Cycling in high heat and humidity can be hard going - quite a few of our group thought that the cycling was harder than the official "moderate" rating of this tour might suggest. Heat and humidity affects people differently, but I think a decent level of fitness is needed for this tour. If in any doubt, you could opt for an e-bike. Suggestions The only negative thing which comes to mind is that, following each day's cycling, there could be a lengthy journey on the coach, which tended to feel uncomfortable whilst still wearing sweaty cycling clothes. However, on the day with the longest post-bike ride coach journey, we did get the opportunity to get a change of clothes.

Cycling Vietnam The organisation, logistics and the team from the outset were absolutely faultless. Small details made the trip so much easier; keys ready at each hotel and no check-in, tickets for sites and tipping taken care of, bikes fully prepped and assigned etc etc. The trip also involved a lot of local people and services which allowed us to get a full view of the country, a little off the tourist trail. The guide and support team dealt with every challenge with patience, positivity and good humour. The riding could have been better. We seemed to spend a lot of time cycling on wide, straight, flat roads and then get on the bus for more interesting terrain. Hybrid bikes would also be a better choice than the MTBs supplied. Good mileages though and challenging enough in the warm, humid weather. Overall, a great trip! Thoughts on Group Leader Son was an excellent guide and host. As were the rest of the team.

It was everything that I expected. And more! On previous Exodus cycle trips other cyclists in the group would say: Mike, have you been to Vietnam with Exodus? When I replied: No they said: just go! So I did, and with a friend, and we loved it. There were many amazing experiences and the accomodations were all much better than I expected. The only downside is the many hours sitting in planes (two 7 hour flights) to get there. Our group leader (Lam) was excellent too, keeping us well informed and smiling, even when we got caught in torrential rain! Most Inspirational Moment Whale Island and Ha Lon Bay Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent

Cycling Vietnam Review I rarely write reviews, but this experience warrants one. The trip leader and crew were excellent. They were organized, friendly and helpful. And the refreshments – the mangos, lemonade – everything was so good. However, the trip itinerary and discussions with Exodus personnel (though they were very nice) did not prepare me for the pollution, hazardous traffic (saw a semi-covered dead body in the countryside – could happen anywhere, but still marred the experience), subpar accommodations and lunches, and unexpected discussions of the US during the Vietnam War opened some wounds that I didn’t know were there. I suspect it would for many in the US, especially for those that served and their families The 12 out of 14 days of rain and wind in what was the dry season didn’t help either, but that’s weather. Everyone made the best of it. I got several items made in Hoi An. While they were very helpful and fast, I would not recommend getting anything tailored – overpriced and mediocre quality. I got to meet some wonderful travel companions. I saw some beautiful landscapes and smiles of the Vietnamese people. Unfortunately, the pollution and trash during 95% of the trip overshadowed anything good. For example, Halong Bay is ruined. Among the green waters and massive limestone structures is the smell of diesel fuel and trash with the immense number of boats/ships bringing so many people in to spoil it all. I would not recommend this trip. I hope that Vietnam decides to restore their environment and natural resources over tourism dollars. Exodus should be more comprehensive in its trip notes and conversations so that travelers like myself can better level set expectations. It’s surprising that an environmentally conscious company like Exodus would bring in people that contribute to the pollution. I wish Vietnam well and will look for ways to help. In the meantime, I will need to reflect on my life decisions. ?? Most Inspirational Moment See above Thoughts on Group Leader See above Advice for Potential Travellers See above Suggestions No Review Centre Reply from Exodus We’re grateful for Christina for leaving a review of her trip, and are glad to read her glowing praise of her tour leader and our local team in Vietnam. However, we really regret that she didn’t have the experience she was expecting in the country. Vietnam is an iconic destination with a complex history which, unfortunately, does suffer from issues with pollution in some areas, especially those popular with tourists such as Ha Long Bay. Exodus travel in small groups and try to minimise our impact on local resources and the environment, and our local team do everything possible to ensure that any waste our groups produce is collected and disposed of responsibly. We’re working with our team to engage in local waste clean-up initiatives, and are confident that we’re doing our utmost to reduce our environmental impact on Vietnam, while still providing our customers with the opportunity to visit its most memorable sites. We’re confident that we do a good job of setting our customers’ expectations about their visit to the country, but will consider reviewing our trip notes going forward. We’re sorry to read that Christina found some of the accommodation to be subpar. The properties we use generally get very positive feedback; from the Holiday Evaluation forms we’ve received from customers who travelled to Vietnam on this trip in 2023, accommodation was rated at an average of 4.51 out of 5, which we consider to be an excellent score. We wish Christina well for her future travels, and are glad that, despite the above, she saw some beautiful landscapes and came home inspired to help improve Vietnam’s environmental problems, which is an aim we share.
