Experience Overview
This fascinating, lesser-known Mediterranean country has a pristine, rugged and wild landscape. Our trek is focussed in the Albanian Alps in the north, where the past is marked by blood feuds and folklore. We explore the pristine wilderness of the remote regions of Theth and Valbonë on foot, where agricultural life has remained unchanged for centuries, offering an authentic and less crowded experience. We then have time to discover the historic towns of Berat (a World Heritage Site) and Krujë and delve into the captivating history of this hospitable country.

Trip For You
This trip has been rated Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
This trip focuses on the north and central regions of Albania and is a balance of walking, culture and sightseeing. During the first half of the week, we trek in the remote Albanian Alps in the north. For the second half, we visit the historic towns of Berat and Krujë.
Walking difficulty: This trekking trip is suitable for the average walker who is prepared to put in some physical preparation. For the most part, our walks follow good trails yet the terrain can be very rocky and slippery in parts, particularly in the Theth and Valbonë regions. We encounter sustained steep ascents/descents (sometimes with gravel slopes) and you should be confident in your ability to deal with heights.
Over the course of the week, we enjoy five walks of varying length. There are three spectacular full-day walks of up to about seven hours of walking per day, and two shorter walks each of roughly one to three hours (including stops). Walking hours stated are given as approximates only. The remainder of our time is spent sightseeing in Berat and Krujë.
Driving: There are some long drives (approximately four hours in total on Day 6 plus a two-hour boat journey), which are unavoidable in order to see as much as possible. Certain areas are still relatively undeveloped, so some drives are on windy and quite bumpy roads. Some roads are full of potholes and of a much lower standard to what is mostly expected in Europe. Still, we are rewarded with spectacular, wild scenery throughout. There may be some very short off-road journeys where seatbelts cannot be guaranteed in the 4×4 vehicles used.
Baggage: Luggage is transferred by horses during the trek. Hard suitcases are therefore not suitable.
Group Description
There will be a local leader, driver, plus a second support guide and horsemen during the trek (to help with luggage transportation from one village to the next, although their English may not be as good as the leader’s). Our local partner, Dorien, was born and raised in the Albanian Alps and has been walking in the region since he was a child.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, four lunches and four dinners included.
Three of these lunches are packed lunches. In the itinerary, we state which meals are included on each day.
Under the leadership of Enver Hoxha (the communist leader of Albania from 1944 to 1985), Albania became a self-sustaining country due to its isolation to the world. With fertile valleys, fresh mountain springs and Mediterranean climate, Albania still has a subsistence culture and shows very little signs of changing. In the countryside, expect your food to have been grown not too far from your plate.
Food in Albania is quite varied thanks to the many influences on the country, particularly Mediterranean, which combines Turkish and European tastes. Dairy products, especially milk and yoghurt are present in almost every meal, usually locally sourced. Meals are reasonably priced at around 550-750 leks (€5-€7) per dish for traditional dishes such as baked rice, casseroles, stuffed aubergine and jani meat (beef or lamb sautéed with onions, garlic and spices). Fresh fish is also plentiful, from the sea or lakes, and is an important ingredient in many dishes. Dishes that must be sampled are Tirana stew, Elbasan yoghurt and baked phyllo pie. For dessert, there are the classic cookies and puddings but most importantly the baklava is very popular. Drinks are reasonably priced with a bottle of local beer costing around 250 leks (€2.40) yet traditional drinks need to be tried as well, raki and Skenderbeu cognac for example (noted for its unique flavour and aroma).
Your leader will recommend restaurants for each evening. Vegetarians are well-catered for in Albania as long as the hotels are advised in advance – please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. If you follow a vegan diet, the variety of food may be limited on this trip. This diet is relatively uncommon in this region and we cannot guarantee the hotels and restaurants will provide meals that have the necessary variety.
Transportation
For this trip, we use private buses. One transfer includes a short off-road section, for this journey we use local transport which will likely not have seatbelts.

Weather Information
Albania generally has a Mediterranean climate with summer temperatures at 25C (77F) on average in the day; the warmest months are July and August, when temperatures can exceed 30C (86F). It becomes cooler further inland towards Korca during these months, especially in the evenings with high temperatures around 25C (77F). There is always the small chance of rain in the mountains yet we aim not to travel in the coldest and wettest months between November and January. Berat also has a Mediterranean climate but thanks to its location in the shadow of Mount Tomorr, summers are much warmer than expected for the Mediterranean.
Spending Money
There are no restrictions on the import of Albanian currency, though local exchange rates are often good. The exchange rate does fluctuate considerably, so it is best to check just before departure. We recommend you change a small amount of money on arrival day in Tirana for water, snacks and drinks; otherwise, you may not get the chance to change money until you reach Shkoder the following day. A budget of 10,465-13,080 leks (€101-€126) for lunches and evening meals (excluding drinks) should be plenty.
Approximate drink prices in restaurants:
— Beer, water and soft drinks: 200 - 400 leks (€2-€4) — Bottle of wine: 1500 leks (€14.50)
Allow 1,960 leks (€19) for entrance fees to other historical sites mentioned as optional against the itinerary and extra for souvenirs etc.
Tipping
Tipping of leaders is entirely at your own discretion. Our local leaders are paid well and fairly for their work. If you wish to show your appreciation, a tip around 270-490 leks (€2.60-€4.70) per person per day would be appreciated. By definition, gratuities are not something that can be included in the tour price.

Mountain guesthouse and hotelsOn this walking adventure in Albania, we spend two nights in a mountain guesthouse, two nights in alpine hotels and two nights in three-star hotels (locally rated). Tirana: Sky 2 Hotel (night 1) The adventure begins at the 43-room Sky 2, a well-located spot in the heart of Tirana, just a 10-minute walk from the main plaza, Skanderbeg Square. There are restaurants, bars and shops nearby, while the hotel itself serves coffee, orange juice from the Albanian coast, and cold drinks. Theth: Shpella Guesthouse (nights 2-3) Enjoy a warm welcome at Shpella, a quaint guesthouse in the Albanian Alps. It’s ideally located to explore Theth National Park, with walks starting from the front door. Rooms have a mountain lodge feel, while the food is traditional local fare with ingredients plucked from the garden. Our groups often eat outside, allowing you to dine with views over soaring mountain peaks. Valbonë: Hotel Breezy/Hotel Margjeka (nights 4-5) In mountainous Valbonë, we stay at either Hotel Breezy or Hotel Margjeka (above), depending on availability. Breezy has 11 modern rooms with mountain views, plus a restaurant, bar and garden. The more traditionally styled Margjeka also has mountain-view rooms, plus a restaurant serving Albanian cuisine made from locally grown produce. Kruje: Hotel Panorama (night 6) Enjoy views over red rooftops to Krujë Castle and the bazaar with our stay at Hotel Panorama. The rooms, which are traditionally styled, also have vistas over the castle and old town. There’s also a casual restaurant, serving local and international cuisine, with mountain and sea views from the balcony. Berat: Hotel Mangalemi/Hotel Belgrad Mangalem In Mangalem, the historic quarter of Berat, our hotel is either Mangalemi (above) or Belgrad Mangalem, depending on availability. The former was the first hotel to open in Berat after the fall of communism in Albania and is built on the ruins of a mansion. It now offers traditional rooms, a stone courtyard and a restaurant-bar. The latter occupies two historic buildings, with traditional rooms and bar. Worth knowing It is possible to book additional accommodation in Tirana before and after the tour. For anyone looking to extend their stay, additional nights can also be arranged in Berat. Contact your sales representative if you wish to extend your trip. Single rooms are only available in Tirana, Valbonë, Kruje and Berat due to a limited number of rooms. Single rooms are not available during the two nights in Theth. Our two nights in the guesthouse at Theth are in double, triple and quadruple rooms, with shared bathrooms (rooms are not mixed sex).

Price per person: (Double Occupancy) CAD $2,755 ($344 /day)
Itinerary
The tour starts at our centrally located hotel in Tirana, the trendy capital of Albania. Settle into the hotel and relax, we rise early tomorrow. Accommodation: Sky 2 Hotel (or similar)
We have an early start this morning and drive to Shkodër (approximately three hours), where we visit the Rozafa Castle and the city centre of one of the oldest places in Albania. Our journey continues into the breath-taking Albanian Alps and Theth National Park (approximately three hours), an area admired for its flora and fauna. After checking into our quaint guesthouse in Theth, we set off on a gentle walk through the valley nestled between wonderful peaks, gaining an insight into agricultural life as we pass local people going about their day. We continue to the Roman Catholic Church of Theth, built in 1892, which was used as a health centre during the Communist regime. The highlight, however, is a visit to the shutting tower (or lock-in tower) of Theth, known locally as Kulla. These historic stone lock-in towers protected families involved in blood feuds and this is one of the few that remain. Accommodation: Shpella Guesthouse (or similar)
Theth Valley is predominantly an agricultural region, where age-old farming practices and horse-drawn carts are still used today. We observe rural life as we begin walking to Theth Waterfall. From here, we continue to Nderlyse, where we find a string of natural pools and a feature known as the Blue Eye of Kapre. There is an opportunity to swim here, so don't forget your swimming costume and towel. Accommodation: Shpella Guesthouse (or similar)
We walk through some of the wildest scenery around into the Tropojë District, known as the home of Albanian folk culture. First, we ascend through forests and alpine pastures to reach the Valbonë Pass (5,905ft/1,800m), where we take a few moments to enjoy spectacular views down Valbonë and Theth valleys. This is the highest point of the trek and a major highlight. It is also a popular spot for taking photos and soaking in the magnificent scenery. We then follow a trail that brings us alongside the Valbonë River, known for its crystal-clear, blue-green waters. We finish at the quaint village of Rragam, where the minibus is waiting to transport us to our hotel. Expect some rocky mountainous terrain today, particularly as we descend. Accommodation: Hotel Breezy/Hotel Margjeka (or similar)
Our route takes us through beech and pine forests down Rosi Peak and leads us onto the White Circle, where we enjoy panoramic views of the peaks and valleys of the Albanian Alps. We may walk the full length of the White Circle and then back down the valley but note that how far the group walks up into the valley is dependent upon weather conditions, timings, and the condition of the group – the decision is taken by the local guide who walks with us in the national park. For those who wish to opt out of the White Circle walk, you can instead walk independently in the area. Please note, the total ascent/descent is 3,280ft (1,000m) if doing the full length. Accommodation: Hotel Breezy/Hotel Margjeka (or similar)
After breakfast, we drive to Fierza (approximately 1hr 30min). We then take a boat across the beautiful Koman Lake (which takes approximately two hours). The boat journey allows us to take in the spectacular scenery as we wind between high cliffs and towering peaks. Three hydroelectric power plants have been built here at the lake, which produce approximately 70 percent of Albania's electricity. We then drive for another 2hr 30min to Kruje, the centre of Skanderbeg's resistance to the Ottoman invasion in the 15th century. On arrival we will visit Kruja Castle which is a symbol of Albanian defiance and pride, offering an immersive historical experience. It also offers offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Aftewards we will edn the day by visiting the old bazaar of Kruja. The bazaar has many shops selling an array of traditional Albanian handicrafts, including handwoven textiles, intricate wood carvings, and unique souvenirs like qeleshe (traditional felt hats). Accommodation: Hotel Panorama (or similar)
This morning we travel to Berat. On arrival, we enjoy a guided tour around the old district, where pretty white buildings are perched on the hill amid pine forests. Our tour includes a visit to the Ethnographic Museum (an 18th-century Ottoman house) and the King Mosque. We walk through the narrow, cobbled streets to reach Berat Castle, where we are rewarded with breath-taking views of Mount Tomorr. Within the castle walls are dwelling houses and the Onufri Museum (Museum of Iconography). There is free time to enjoy the other sites of Berat or to perhaps absorb the relaxed cafe culture on the promenade. Our hotel is in Mangalem, the historic quarter of Berat, where the castle peers down upon the area from its hilltop. Accommodation: Hotel Mangalemi/Hotel Belgrad Mangalem (or similar)
The tour ends today. Speak to your sales representative if you’d like to extend your stay in this fascinating city or to join the group transfer to Tirana Airport (approximately two hours).

Go now before it changes Well organised before and during. Everything within Exodus’s control ran like clockwork. Most Inspirational Moment Crossing the high passes and the boat trip on Komani lake went through scenery reminiscent of Norwegian fjords. Cities of Kruges and Berat gave a great contrast having spent a few days in the empty spectacular mountains. Thoughts on Group Leader Bleaerd was a great guide, very knowledgeable and personable, we always felt safe in his hands. Advice for Potential Travellers Go now before the mountain villages become like a modern Alpine resort. Understandably the local economy will benefit from all the new hotels being built and this cannot be denied in one of the poorest countries in Europe. But as I said go now before there is a massive increase in tourism. The guest house accommodation was a challenge for some people who did not realise they might be sharing a room with other members of the trip. This is because there is a shortage of accommodation in Theth. It is only 2 nights but be prepared. Suggestions We extended our trip by a week spending 2 extra days in Tirana then going to Sarande. Its a very long bust trip in excess of 5 hours. From Sarande it is a short 30 minute trip to theWorld Heritage site of Burtrit National Park where there are excellent Roman remains including a very good amphitheatre. On reflection rather than spending 5 days in Sarande we would have spent less time there and then taken the ferry to Corfu for a couple of nights and flying back to the UK from Corfu. As it was we flew back from Tirana but is meant another plus 5 hour bus journey.

Great hiking! This trip to Albania provided hikes far beyond my expectations, the best of which was crossing the pass from Theth to Valbone. We each ascended/descended at our own pace that day, as the path was very clearly marked, and regrouped every so often at the cafes along the way – the perfect opportunity to really enjoy your own tempo. Dorian was a fantastic leader, really knowledgeable and keen to share. Good food and lovely hosts everywhere we went. I’m a vegetarian and didn’t struggle to find plenty of options – Dorian made sure I was always accommodated for. Take your swimmers for an icy cold dip in the blue pool. Definitely would recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys lively culture, good food and a nice hike.

Great walks and interesting history The trip was a good balance for me between excellent walking through stunning scenery and learning about the country’s history and visiting some historic sites. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorian was a great guide: very encouraging when walking, coped very well when problems arose (didn't let us know). Extensive local and national knowledge and a good sense of humour. Dorian also cared about our local well-being and needs. Advice for Potential Travellers Remember it can be hot and humid. Take lots of water I packed a light-weight hair dryer but didn't need it (either available or too hot!) Small head-torch is useful depending on your itinerary. I felt very safe even when on my own away from people. Suggestions The food was good and interesting!

Great trip We were a group of seven people on this trip. Our tour leader’s name was Bledin (probably the wrong spelling). He was an excellent leader, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. For some of the time we were really just sightseeing, but when we were trekking it was quite hard work. This trip is classified as moderate, but I do feel that it should be classified as moderate/ challenging, as when we were trekking in the alps, we were on shale, which is rather challenging, especially as I’d never walked on that surface before. However, with Bledin’s help I was able to successfully negotiate the three days of trekking. Our forth walk was on rocky steps which I am more familiar with. The Albanian people are very friendly, and helpful. The wife of one of the hoteliers even leant me a pair of boots, when mine fell apart! All in all, a very enjoyable trip. Most Inspirational Moment Managing to walk across the snow on the pass between Theth and Valbone' Thoughts on Group Leader He was excellent Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure that you can walk up mountains on shale.

Walking in Albania.................. Such a beautiful, currently unspoiled, country full of diversity and dramatic scenery Most Inspirational Moment Reaching the top of the mountain ranges and looking out across the wonderful landscapes ......and......the boat trip on Komani Lake - magical! Thoughts on Group Leader Very pleasant and accommodating Advice for Potential Travellers You need to have some Hill walking experience in order to enjoy this trip. The duration of the ascents is more of a challenge than the gradient Suggestions I think this is a well thought out balanced trip giving a good taster of this beautiful country. Definitely one of the best Treks I have done

Walking in Albania The guide was excellent. Think it should be rated Level 4. Food generally not great Most Inspirational Moment Haven’t got one. Thoughts on Group Leader Excellent Advice for Potential Travellers The walking was hard. All the walks had constant ascents and descents on difficult terrain.

Exodus Tailormade Southern Albania I felt we spent too much time in the bus and not enough time walking and exploring. Sometimes we didn’t know where we were going because our guide had only told the people at the front of the group. It would help if the guide said where we were and whether we would need walking boots or swimsuits etc. Otherwise it was an excellent trip – we saw a lot of southern Albania. Most Inspirational Moment I enjoyed the walk up from Permeti to Leuse church. The views were great and the beautiful church was so unexpected. We enjoyed seeing the little old village of Leuse too. Butrint was wonderful. Thoughts on Group Leader She was very nice but did not ensure that the whole group could hear and understand her. It would have helped if she had explained where we were going and what we would need at the beginning of each day and again as we arrived at some place. Advice for Potential Travellers Read Robert Carver's book - The Accursed Mountains Read The Man Who was Greenmantle by Margaret Fitzherbert Read Albanian Assignment by David Smiley Read any book by Ismail Kadares Suggestions I would have liked better notes from Exodus.

Excellent Week Trip My advice is to visit Albania soon before everyone else catches on! At the moment it feels relatively tourist free and undiscovered to those who like an adventure. Most Inspirational Moment The North has wonderful unspoilt mountains for walking in. I am glad I went on all the scheduled walks and didn't take the shorter option on the White Circle as the views were amazing for little more effort. The cultural highlight for me was seeing the painted frescoes in some of the churches in Berat castle. I was not expecting the detail or amount still surviving. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader, Dorien Malaj, was very helpful and friendly. He coped well with all the demands that a group of 16 different adults with varying walking abilities and interests presented. His contacts with locals felt like a big part of the ability to experience many aspects of Albania that other visitors might not have. Advice for Potential Travellers My tip if I did it again would be to remember to bug spray legs if wearing shorts as I came away with quite a few itchy swelling bites.

walking in albania This is a really great trip combining some really challenging walking in wonderful, completely unspoilt mountainous terrain for the first half of the trip and a short exploration of Albanian culture for the second half. The accommodation in the mountains in very friendly, family run guest houses was beyond my expectations and always very clean – a great experience. The food, particularly at Valbone, was excellent and plentiful. It was a great pleasure to visit a country/region where tourism has not yet arrived! Most Inspirational Moment Difficult to pin down any particular moment - walking in the completely unspoilt, non touristy (difficult to find these days!) Albanian mountains was certainly inspirational. Thoughts on Group Leader Arvil was an extremely pleasant and well informed leader who spoke English fluently. However there are 2 points I would like to raise regarding his decisions 1. For reasons which were never made clear the already scheduled long drive from Valbona (Day 6) to Berat was extended to go via Dourros on the coast (his home town I believe). There appeared no good reason for this. This made it an extremely tiring day of almost 12 hours arriving at Berat at 1900 where we were, after checking into our hotel, taken off for a guided tour of 2 of the oldest mosques in the country (on the itinerary for the following day). Most of the group including myself were too tired to either challenge this or declined this tour. 2. On Day 5 the option to do the full length of the White Circle was not given. Although I was perfectly happy to walk only as far as the ridge and back down the valley, I know that at least 2 of the group was very disappointed not be able to be given this choice. Again no reason for this was presented by Arvil. Advice for Potential Travellers If you are not fit and a seasoned walker this trip will find you out!!! The Exodus rating of 3 Moderate is a little understated I would say. The mountain walking in this programme is really wonderful but if you are not already a regular walker and unfit think twice about this. Having said all of the above I would highly recommend this programme if you like unspoilt untouristy places - go now before its too late! Suggestions I hesitated to give the programme the "excellent" rating which in many ways it deserves - the wonderful walking, excellent food and accommodation, and good guiding (despite my above comments on Arvil's handling of the programme in a couple of instances - mainly because the cultural part of the programme, in my view, could be improved greatly by adding an extra night at Berat (which everybody loved) instead of just the one night. In that way participants would have time to really appreciate this really fascinating city and recover from the long trip from the mountains. Most of the group were of the same opinion.

Chris Porter - Traveled, September 2017
Walking in Albania We completed this walk in mid September so experienced good walking weather conditions, not too hot plus rain at night, how considerate. The trip was just as described in the detailed trip notes involving some stunning high mountain walking plus a range of terrific other non exertive cultural experiences. Phew. Instead of entering back into our rather luxurious new Mercedes coach on day one after a delicious lunch in Shkodër we crammed into this battered rough and tough old blue bus with no seatbelts and mis matched seats. This wonderfully set the scene for all that we were about to head on a trip into serious back country. Great fun. Most Inspirational Moment Theth to Volbona via Volbona Pass was fantastic, stunning mountain vistas and you felt could almost touch Montenegro we were that high and close. A close second though was the Lake Komeni boat trip, deep gorges and wildlife close by on the shore, so near yet too far. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorian was a great and personable tour leader deaing with the range of personalities in a large group with aplomb. He displayed considerable knowledge of his country and seemed to know practically everyone in Albania. A highlight was his sensitivity in frequent engagement with locals, who genuinely appeared to appreciate our group’s attention rather than rushing past. Advice for Potential Travellers Fitness is quite important as it is not a stroll in municipal parks. Several of the walks were quite challenging, as to be expected with 1,000 metre ascents /descents, although the rewards were equally spectacular. Some people found sections of the Volbona Pass walk vertiginous, although with the group travelling at a slowish pace there was no sense of rushing to catch up.

David Martin - Traveled, September 2017
Some fairly challenging walks with fantastic views followed by more leisurely sight-seeing The trip notes warn: “This trek is suitable for the average walker who is prepared to put in some physical preparation”. For us, as a family of 5 adults, the longer walking days provided more challenge for some than others. However, worries (suggested to me by my doctor) that my creaky 60-year-old knee would give up were unfounded, though I found walking poles essential. The trip notes perhaps understate the poor state of the remote mountain road down to Theth, with vertiginous drops off the side of the road and some scary moments passing other vehicles. It is not only on the walks that you need to be able to deal with heights! The ‘basic hotel’ in Theth is, in fact, delightful: rooms are simply-finished but very attractive and the view from the terrace down the valley as you sip raki or a cold beer, or both, is lovely. Service is slow at busy times but the family who runs the hotel make up for any failings by their warm welcome. Most Inspirational Moment We went for the walking more than the sight-seeing and the walk over the Valbona pass was, despite its challenges, the high point. The views up from Theth were very different from those on the way down to Rragam and Valbone. Everywhere we looked there were jaw-dropping views. The drive down to Berat was very long but the city is beautiful and well worth it once we got there. Thoughts on Group Leader It would have been great if the guide had been more knowledgable about the basics of the geology, flora and fauna of the mountain area. Advice for Potential Travellers Do assess your own level of physical fitness and do some preparation, even if a stiff climb up the South Downs is rather tame compared to 1000m ascent in the Albanian Alps. Don't be put off by any enduring reputation that Albania has for violence. There are probably still a great many guns in private hands but we didn't see any. The political situation described most eloquently by Robert Carver in 'The Accursed Mountains' no longer applies: the book is well worth reading but not as a guide to modern Albania. A lot has changed in 20 years! Suggestions We couldn't have found a better group holiday for our family holiday together. It was the sort of adventure we all like. Show less

Good mixture of walking and culture This is a holiday for those who want a mixture of some quite tough walks in rather remote places and also wish to explore the culture of this little known (to most British people) European country. Most Inspirational Moment Getting to the top of the mountain on the walk between Theth and Valone. I really didn't think I'd make it, but ti was worth it for the view. The wonderful Ethnographic museum in Berat - and the town itself. The veiw from the Hotel Panaroma on the last night - it lived up to its name. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorian always had interesting facts to tell us about the areas we were visiting and was very good at adapting plans to the needs of the group. We wouldn't have seen so many amazing places without his knowledge. Advice for Potential Travellers The walking can be quite tough, if like me, you are used to walking in less hilly/mountainous areas. Be prepared to pack a lot into each day. Suggestions The town of Berat was amazing, as was the hotel there. I'd have loved to have stayed another night so I could have explored the local area more.

Walking in Albania, July 2016 A great way to discover a little of this real gem of a country, this trip combines some amazing days of walking with interesting cultural sights. The walking is truly first rate, perfect for day hikes, the days in the mountains are full of unspoilt beauty and rugged terrain, always with comfortable (and surprisingly good quality) accommodation waiting at the end of the day. Coupled with days sightseeing in Berat, Prizen and Kruja, this makes for a truly enjoyable, memorable trip. Most Inspirational Moment Walking the Valbone pass, looking down one way to Thethi and the other to Valbone, under clear skies and rugged, handsome mountains in every direction. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorien has the unique mix of skills that make for a great guide, able to move from mountain guide to city seamlessly he makes the whole experience run like clockwork, no small feat and to be appreciated no end by travellers. Advice for Potential Travellers In the heat of high summer the walks may be a little tougher than you might expect, consider those days the high end of moderate, but this is balanced by the other days and short walk options. Suggestions With the tide of tourists spreading south from Croatia, go before it gets huge.

Walking in Albania This like many of the exodus trips did not disappoint. What a welcome from our local rep Dorien , despite the heat of the day he was smiling all the time. the trip starts quietly in Tirana then moves into the mountains, fough roads even river beds we got through to the wonderful area around Theth, magnificent in a rugged way. Then the walks start, if you are not fit these next three days will find you out, up hill and more, but the scenery and view is worth it. The trip brings you to Berat with it`s wonderful cafe culture with long boulevards. This largely undiscovered country and its people are so welcoming and friendly that it was a sad day when this holiday came to an end. Most Inspirational Moment My highlight`s are many but the view you get from standing high on of the Albanian alps taking in the magnificent scenery is breathtaking. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorien. Well what a man he is not only well learned in the history of Albania, he is also funny, he also was able to relate to all the group, whatever age or gender. He was just lovely. Advice for Potential Travellers Go with an open mind and just enjoy this wonderful country

Walking and More in Albania This trip offers a combination of (fairly serious) walking and culture, and as such might be slightly mis-named, in that the walking is concentrated at the start and the trip then becomes more of a mix – this is worth pointing out in case you are expecting heavy duty walking every day. It didn’t bother me though, I loved the mix and exploring this fascinating country still struggling with its new freedom whilst also giving the old legs a bit of a stretch. There’s a fair bit of travelling around, but nothing too serious, and I found the day trip into Kosovo provided an extra dimension. Most Inspirational Moment Two things - the sense of achievement on reaching the summit of the mountain pass, which provided a rewarding view for the considerable effort involved to get there, and connecting with the locals. Dorian, our guide, seemed to know someone wherever we went, and these contacts were free with their thoughts and feelings and didn't mind how many questions we asked them. They were also extremely free with the raki! These were experiences I seriously doubt I'd have got if solo travelling. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorien is a great guide, very eager to please, maybe even too eager. He could afford to relax more, maybe eat with the group, but he is always thinking about how to make the trip better. This a laudable aim, but for now let's enjoy it as it is! Advice for Potential Travellers Definitely pack good walking boots and wet weather gear. Otherwise, no need to overdo it (as I did). Also, make sure you are relatively fit or you won't get the most out of the trip. Finally, to reiterate if you want to do 10 miles every day, this may not be the trip for you. If you want a mix, it is. Suggestions Albania feels very safe, and although one of our group had a camera stolen, it's entirely possible the culprit was another traveller when we stopped at a guest house (not from our group I hasten to add). The accommodation was also of a pretty good standard - aircon and wifi was freely available (not everywhere, but mostly), although there were no safes in any of the rooms.

Amazing Albania A challenging experience in the most stunning scenery which offers a reasonable balance between walking and sight seeing. Most Inspirational Moment The moment I stepped foot on the top of the Valbone Pass - a real achievement for me to have conquered the climb! Thoughts on Group Leader Dorian is an inspirational guide who is passionate about his country. He is knowledgeable, encouraging and supportive. We all learned so much about Albania and its history, as well as experiencing a fantastic, if challenging holiday. Advice for Potential Travellers Ensure your own fitness level. The early days of this holiday are challenging. I found them really difficult - primarily because I was inadequately prepared. Suggestions Accommodation throughout was very good. In the main it was better than I had anticipated. Most hotels were located in beautiful picturesque surroundings and offered comfortable rooms. I'm looking for my next Exodus adventure!

Walking in Albania Stunning drives and stunning walks in the Albanian Alps will live with us. And also the group, which was a very successful convivial and complementary collection of personalities. Most Inspirational Moment The folklore evening was probably the best evening I've ever spent on an Exodus trip. Thoughts on Group Leader Dorian was an enthusiastic and energetic walk leader, thinking on his feet and doing his best to cater for the interests of each member of the group. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared to enjoy copious amounts of local feta cheese! Food generally is not greatly inspiring, especially for vegetarians. Show less

Discovering a beautiful country Overall an enjoyable holiday with a mix of scenery/walking/culture. The hotels were generally very good -better than I expected-except the last one Teater Kame. It had a nice swimming pool but the chalets had a rather run down feel. The shower head in my room was broken -more water went over the shower room ceiling than over me- although at least the water was hot. Also the hand rail outside my chalet was broken -with nails and screws exposed. The food was generally good although 5 people (luckily I was not one of them) suffered food poisoning at one hotel. Most Inspirational Moment Walking in the vicinity of Thethi -particularly the walk from Thethi to Valbona. The contrast between the two sides of the pass is quite striking. Both are beautiful -but very different scenically. It was a tough walk but well worth it for the views. Thoughts on Group Leader I thought Juri was a very good leader. She was kind and caring throughout and looked after us well. There were eight in our party and we were all very different temperamentally- but I think we all agreed that Juri was a good leader-and will get even better with more experience. Suggestions I think it might be better if the group went to pre selected restaurants where we could be sure of getting seats, getting a menu ( preferably in English) and getting served in a reasonable time. On a couple of occasions we went to restaurants on spec. One could not take us because there was a wedding party taking place and the other took over one hour to serve lunch. I would also have liked a little bit more free time to explore places on my own -particularly Berat -which is an interesting city to visit

Walking in Albania This is the third time I have walked in Albania and it was the best. The revised itinerary with more walking in the Theth National Park and the contrasting landscape of Rubik improves the experience. Each year the accommodation and food improves so now the while holiday is a really high standard, yet Albania still retains a “different” atmosphere making it still an adventure, and the people are all really welcoming to visitors. Most Inspirational Moment Achieving all the walks without feeling stiff the next day - this has taken several months of training. Mastering a few more words of Albanian. A superb fun-filled evening in Berat. Thoughts on Group Leader Nothing is too much trouble for Dorien, he constantly made sure that everyone was happy by discussing and explaining options for meals, stops etc. He completely gets the English sense of humour and helps to generate a good group atmosphere from the start. His knowledge of Albanian history is extensive but not overbearing. He is able to get the best from the local providers - guides, horse owners and guesthouse staff because of his long experience and good reputation. Advice for Potential Travellers Take a head torch for the occasional power cut and the cave visit Take walking poles Above all - go to Albania and experience the wonderful scenery and friendly people for yourself. See a country that although almost on our doorstep still has something a little undiscovered to offer. Suggestions I have visited three times and each time seen new things, learned new thing, made new friends and achieved new things. I would go again at the drop of a hat!
