Experience Overview
Cross-country skiing is a fantastic way to explore the jagged limestone peaks of the Dolomites. With pre-cut tracks (known as loipes) offering a network of routes on varying terrain, there is something for everyone. Unlike downhill skiing, this is more of an aerobic workout and not all about speed. Crucially, cross-country skis can be used on flats, descents, and even ascents with the right technique.
Dobbiaco, set at 3,940ft (1,200m) above sea level in the heart of the region, is one of our most popular centres, offering weeks at Beginner to Advanced level. Our base is the welcoming hotel run by the Tschurtschenthaler family, where warm hospitality and comfortable surroundings provide the perfect balance to an active itinerary.

Trip For You
Cross-country skis are longer, thinner and lighter than those used for downhill with bindings that allow you to lift up your heel. Most cross-country skiing is undertaken on prepared tracks (loipes) covering flat and hillier terrain, enabling you to explore the winter landscapes away from the confines of the alpine pistes. It is a great aerobic workout and something that can be easily adapted to your skill and fitness level.
We offer cross-country skiing trips to suit a wide range of technical and physical levels. Our cross-country skiing grades reflect both the level of physical fitness required and the level of skiing experience required. They are comparable to the Activity Levels we use on our snowshoeing holidays. We believe a slightly different system is needed due to the coaching we provide. This sets our cross-country skiing trips apart, as we rarely need to teach people how to ride a bike or hike. The aim remains to create groups of similar ability and fitness. Our descriptions are below; however, feel free to call and speak to an expert if you are unsure which grade or trip type will suit you best.
At Dobbiaco, there are three grades of skiing offered, ranging from Beginner to Advanced. Availability varies. Depending on the dates, there may be two leaders offering two different grades or one leader offering a single cross-country skiing grade. Please check the grade of skiing for each week in Dates & Prices.
Grade 1 – Beginners
For complete beginners. We start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least five to six hours a day with a focus on learning, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours. In some centres, there may also be some easy off-track skiing. This involves leaving the pre-cut tracks, typically across frozen lakes or snow-covered pastures.
Grade 2 – Improvers
Ideal for those who have enjoyed at least one Grade 1 trip and grasped the basics. They offer coaching to refresh and improve technique and typically will ski a little further than Grade 1 weeks, and over more varied terrain (ie more ups and downs) and therefore requiring a slightly higher level of fitness. In some cases, these weeks are acceptable for newcomers to cross-country skiing. Beginners should be very fit and proficient in sports that develop balance (ice skating, roller skating or roller skiing) and will need to pick up the basic technique quickly. Please contact us if you wish to book a Grade 2 trip but have not skied before.
Grade 3 – Intermediates
Ideal for those looking to push on, tackle slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks of skiing behind them, be very comfortable with the basics and happy on longer day tours. There will still be coaching on these weeks, at the required level.
Grade 4 – Advanced
Choose this level if you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, manage a controlled snowplough descent, and if you want to ski at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing varies.
Group Description
The group will generally be between six and 20 people. There will be a UK leader and drivers and local guides where needed. There will normally be one leader per 10 people.
Our leaders are experienced ski enthusiasts, keen to impart their knowledge and skills. Instruction is included at all levels – naturally Beginner weeks feature a large element of instruction to get you started. Those who ski at an Advanced grade will enjoy the combination of longer tours with some on‐the‐ground coaching as and when required.
The minimum age of clients on this trip is 14 years. Anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian.
Eating Drinking
An ample buffet breakfast prepares us for the exertions of the day ahead. The excellent evening meals draw equally on Italian and Austrian traditions. They are usually four-courses, but it is always possible to skip a course if you want a lighter dinner. For lunch, our leaders will take us to a variety of cafes or huts serving traditional Tyrolean dishes and international classics.
Transportation
Airport transfers are carried out by private bus and may be shared with other tours in the area. As part of the skiing itinerary, we use the extensive network of public buses, which enables us to explore different tracks and find the best snow.

Weather Information
Dobbiaco is 3,940ft (1,200m) above sea level; at this height, snow can lie from December to mid-March, with fresh snowfalls at any time. Average daytime temperatures in winter are around -5C (23F), though they can fall as low as -15C (5F), with approximately eight to 10 hours of daylight. In winter, you can expect periods of clear, bright weather. In February and March, it can become surprisingly warm in the sun. Equally, you need to be ready for the occasional stormy day at all times.
Spending Money
For meals not included we suggest around €8-€12 per lunch.
Local taxes: Many Italian cities have introduced a tourist tax for non-residents. The local administration oversees the tax, which will be collected by the accommodation provider at check-in or check-out. This fee varies depending on the hotel category, the season and number of days of stay. It is usually between €0.50 and €1.50 per person per night. For this trip, please allow around €24, depending on the season, for the week.
Optional excursion
Self-guided snowshoeing: Free-to-use snowshoes can be hired from the hotel (subject to availability)
Many ski areas are easily accessible from Dobbiaco, including Plan de Corones and Cortina D’Ampezzo, each offering a wide selection of alpine skiing possibilities. Only a 10-minute bus journey away, San Candido and Versciaco have 33mi (53km) of downhill slopes for all skiing levels. Alpine skis can be hired in Dobbiaco for approximately €25 per day. For more information about the alpine skiing in this area visit www.dolomitisuperski.com. Although we give information on the alpine skiing in our winter resorts, our leaders are not alpine instructors and may only be able to give limited advice about the facilities/conditions.
Tipping
Although optional, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend a contribution between €15 and €20 per client.

Exellent trip! The is the perfect place to learn to cross country ski or brush up on your skills. Incredibly beauiful scenery, great instructor/leader and very comfortable accommodations. I loved the spa! The trails were well maintained and we were lucky with the snow. Most Inspirational Moment Being able to ski 25 Km by the end of the week. You get fitter as you go! Thoughts on Group Leader One of the best ever! Friendly, caring, inclusive. Went the extra mile. Advice for Potential Travellers If you bring a camel back for drinking water, buy a little fleece for the tube so the water doesn't freeze at the higher altitudes.

Early but good This was the earliest in the season I’ve been to Dobbiaco. Although some of the trails had not been prepared and some of the eating places had not opened yet the trip was still really good. The snow had arrived early so the conditions were really good. Most Inspirational Moment "Time-trialling" myself from Landros to Dobbiaco. Non stop double pole! Thoughts on Group Leader Michele was really good. He was able to manage the group with a wide range of abilities and experience. Advice for Potential Travellers You should avoid heavy ski jackets. Lighter jackets and layers is the way to go. A merino base layer and a light hat and gloves with a good grip make things easier. Suggestions As usual the hotel was really nice and relaxing with excellent food.

Good skiing in stunning locations A very good week of skiing thanks to Alex and Michele, the group leaders. Most Inspirational Moment The Dolomites scenery, nature and accessibility are all inspirational. Thoughts on Group Leader Alex is experienced, approachable and flexible. Advice for Potential Travellers If you like tea or coffee in your room, take a travel kettle and mugs. Suggestions Hotel Tschurtschenthaler looked after our group very well with clean, comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast and dinners, and accessible, friendly bar. The staff were attentive and helpful at all times.

Reviewed March 2019 Not recommended for complete beginners The trip was enjoyable overall, but as a complete novice to skiing, I struggled. Almost everyone in the group had some experience of either cross-country or downhill skiing, and the pace of the group was understandably set by them. As such, those of us with no experience had to learn very quickly, and I could have done with more practice and training before heading out on the less basic routes. The end of the week in particular was very tough. Most Inspirational Moment - Advice for Potential Travellers This is a good trip for people with some experience of skiing or for those that can learn quickly.

Excellent week in Dobbiaco A great week’s cross country skiing in Dobbiaco. Sunshine and blue skies were great but the snow was getting thin by the end of the week. Hotel was very good. Excellent breakfast buffet and plenty of choice for the evening meal. Wellness suite was great to stretch the muscles after a good day skiing. Efficient bus service to get to different ski areas each day and only a few minutes walk from the hotel. Most Inspirational Moment The skiing was very good every day but my best memory will be having a coffee by the lake above Dobbiaco which is very beautiful. Thoughts on Group Leader We had 2 leaders as this was a Level 1 and 2 holiday. Alex led our group and I found the pace and the teaching perfect. He knows the area very well and was able to choose good skiing every day despite the worsening snow conditions. Advice for Potential Travellers Take lots of thin layers as the start of the day may be cold but once the sun gets up so does the temperature. A close fitting light rucksack is very useful to carry water, suncream and the layers you remove. Suggestions This was our third ski week in Dobbiaco and the scenery is so beautiful I hope we will be back again.

Cross country skiing Dobiacco Endless snow covered trails, rugged beautiful scenery, great company……I didn’t want it to end! Possibly my 8th time in Dobiacco but still inspired on new trails and forever in awe of the views. Love going back to the Hotel Tschurtschenthaler which is always welcoming and well situated with plenty of food. How long until next year? Most Inspirational Moment Watching the blind skiers enjoying their environment on cross country skis with their guides. Thoughts on Group Leader Both Liz and Ingrid worked tirelessly together to make the trip the best it has ever been. I’m forever in awe of their fitness and skiing skills and I had an amazing time. Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you go on the right grade holiday for you. Suggestions Please could Exodus try a trip for touring grade 3 cross country skating style skiers such as myself.

Fantastic skiing on good snow in the sunshine - with excellent leaders When I first cross country skied in Norway 15 years ago, my leader said ‘go to Dobbiaco’. And now that I have, I understand why she recommended it. The skiing was excellent and varied, with just the right amount of challenge without being scary. The snow conditions were great and we had good weather. The sceenrybwas stunning. The hotel was very welcoming, and a good wellness centre with sauna, swimming and steam – a perfect way to relax after a day skiing. Most Inspirational Moment Many inspirational moments - skiing through beautiful landscapes. Thoughts on Group Leader The two leaders, Ingrid and Alex, were both excellent. Athough we were all experienced skiers, they took time to check out our skills on the first couple of days and helped everyone ski better. They assessed our ability well and took us to places with just the right amount of challenge. They were both good fun, competent, knowledgeable and all round good leaders who made me feel safe and confident. Advice for Potential Travellers Go and enjoy yourself! But do check you are booking the right grade holiday.

Best holiday ever I fell in love with the Dolomites, so beautiful. Cross country skiing is an awesome way to see the winter scenery. Our instructors were great. Being first timers we learnt from the best, Liz is an excellent instructor both with verbal queues and demonstrations. Fun exercises to learn safely. It was the best winter adventure and most wonderful Christmas. Most Inspirational Moment Breaking tracks through fresh snow, it felt like we were pioneers. A great adventure. Thoughts on Group Leader An excellent instructor, very talented, knowlegable and fun. Advice for Potential Travellers Just do It!!! Suggestions The hotel was lovely friendly and warm. We met some great people.

Ticked all the boxes Holiday provided exactly what I wanted. Confidence to master the basics of a new and demanding sport, excellent leader, great hotel, fabulous location and a friendly group. Most Inspirational Moment On the fourth day of skiing after fresh snow, we explored a stunning valley in beautiful weather. Had another wonderful lunch in the knowledge we would work it all off before our 5 course dinner! Does it get any better? Thoughts on Group Leader Very friendly, very knowledgeable and a very patient and inspiring teacher. Advice for Potential Travellers Target your pre trip training. Good stamina level essential. Triceps, adductors and shoulders suffered! Then just go, eat ski and lose weight ! Suggestions Living in north of England it was bit frustrating to have flight back too late for last train north. Maybe need to explore regional options next time.

What a surprise! Now, I realised pretty quickly that I am NOT the demographic that Exodus aims for. I am fat and mid 50 and although I ride my city bike every day to work and walk the dog,I am not fit. I do not have a racing bike, I walk rather than run (or take a bus or tram) and my gym membership lapsed years ago. I like to swim properly – but thats it. However, I could join my road biking, running, daily yoga doing husband on this trip, AND have a good time! Most Inspirational Moment When I realised I could keep up with the others in my group, that it was ok to be slower, that Liz, our teacher was patient with me and enjoyed my successes as much as I did! That Liz could adapt the programme to allow me to stay with the group, without frustrating them. Thoughts on Group Leader Amazing. Liz Procter, ex PE teacher and fitness nut - you were amazing. At times when I could have sat down and cried, you were there, helping set me right and encouraging me all the time. You set me goals and helped me adapt. You were always there with a ready reward or thick hot chocolate and strudel! Advice for Potential Travellers Just go! I had NEVER skiid before and I love d it. Yes we will go again... The hotel is basic and there is no choice for main meal for vegetarians, but we were always full! Suggestions This is beautiful area and well worth a visit. Even if there is not much snow, it still works for beginners. The Nordic arena is great for practice.

Alex and his penguins This was a really good week of my two weeks. A good mixture of skiing and valuable instruction from Alex. He managed the mixed abilities of the group members really well using the penguins (don’t ask!) to assist him in doing this. The other participants were good fun and easy to get along with. The hotel as usual was really good. Most Inspirational Moment The long ski at the end of the week where we were able to put what we had learnt into practice. Thoughts on Group Leader Extremely good at providing instruction that met the needs of the whole group. He was good company and in good humour the whole week. Was aware of health and safety but did not let this interfere with our enjoyment. Advice for Potential Travellers Challenge yourself. The leader will support you and know when to encourage you to extend yourself. Watch out for the penguins! Suggestions The day after the holiday finished I participated in a local race. I was given invaluable advice in doing this by Alex and Liz the other leader. They made it clear that this was not part of the holiday and that I needed to have my own adequate insurance.

Cross country skiing Dobbiaco A fantastic week of beginners skiing around the Dolomites. We had excellent tuition from Alex, the hotel was very comfortable with the added bonus of pool, saunas and steam rooms at the end of the day. Food was delicious. Most Inspirational Moment Being able to come down hill in control! It was a great feeling when you got the technique right and were able to glide along in the beautiful scenery. Thoughts on Group Leader Alex was a first class leader and teacher. He had all sorts of tricks and tips to help us improve including the use of felt penguins and skiing down with chocolates on a tray - you got to eat them if they stayed on! Even had a quick game of one legged football. Snow on the mountains was limited but the tracks were fine as they bring in fresh snow. Alex took us to different areas according to the best skiing. Advice for Potential Travellers Have a small lunch in preparation for a 5 course evening meal.

Great tour leader Alex our tour leader was brilliant. He was bright, cheerful, knowledgeable, creative and above all stretched us but looked after our safety too. Most Inspirational Moment Skiing 26 KM Thoughts on Group Leader Brilliant - he is exceptional - he is knowledgeable, experienced, creative in his teaching method, informative, fun but also made sure we were safe at all times. Advice for Potential Travellers If you do level 3 make sure you are fit enough for it.

Brilliant time in Italy We had a brilliant week, cross country skiing in Italy. Unfortunately there was not much snow, and it didn’t snow while we were there, but artificial snow had been laid for the tracks so we were still able to ski as planned, just not in as many different places. The hotel was lovely and the food was really good. We had good leaders who made every effort to find good tracks to ski, and who helped us all to improve our skills, and the company all week was excellent. Most Inspirational Moment There was a good mix of people in the group, and everyone gelled together really well. It was great soon after we arrived to watch the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree by Nonna, with real candles! Only a whole heap of snow would have made it better. Thoughts on Group Leader Andy was the leader of our group, and he helped everyone to improve their cross country skiing. He went out of his way to find decent tracks, not helped by the weather! Advice for Potential Travellers These days Christmas time is too early to have anthing like a guarantee of snow in this part of the Alps. Suggestions This was our first Christmas away, and we really enjoyed it.

Two fantastic weeks My trip lasted two weeks. The first week was grade 4 with Michele. The second was grades 3 and 4 with Michele and Alex. Most Inspirational Moment There were many enjoyable moments over the two weeks. Probably the most inspirational was skiing from the top of Prato Piazza to the bottom of it. The conditions were the best I've experienced there. Thoughts on Group Leader Michele and Alex are both excellent leaders with different personalities. This is one of the things that makes a two week trip really interesting. I spent the first week with Michele and most of the second week with Alex who was doing the grade 3. With both of the weeks being high grades the teaching was rightly limited and appropriate. This was done really well as you expect with Exodus. Advice for Potential Travellers Try it! If you're new to cross country skiing go on a grade 1or grade 1 and 2. The teaching you'll receive will be appropriate for your lack of experience and you will develop skills over the week and be ready to book another trip. Even if you're at a beginner grade you need to ensure that you have a decent fitness level. You don't need a heavy skiing jacket. You should bring layers you can take of and put on during the day. Merino base layers are ideal. Suggestions Dobbiaco and the hotel are perfect for cross country skiing. There is plenty to do in the area and the spa is a brilliant place to be after a day on the loipa.

Another excellent holiday Uninterrupted sunshine for 7 days helped to make this a week of excellent varied skiing. It was very cold in the mornings and late afternoon. so layers were essential. This was our second stay at this lovely comfortable hotel, with friendly helpful staff, and tasty meals with plenty of choice for all preferences. Most Inspirational Moment Reaching the highest point of the track every day and enjoying tremendous views of the Dolomites, then it was great to have a long ski downhill. Thoughts on Group Leader Our leaders were Michele and Alex, who planned every day to suit the weather and capabilities of the group and were kind and considerate leaders. They both know the area really well, so could arrange meeting points and lunch stops for everyone. They joined us most evenings for dinner, so we felt we got to know them and benefitted from their experience and local knowledge Advice for Potential Travellers You need a reasonable level of fitness for this holiday, and to be reasonably confident and competent on cross country skis. But the 2 grades mean that it's likely you can join a group at a similar level, and have a great time in Dobbiaco.

Hard work, great fun, good company The grade 2 holiday was challenging enough for me. The temperature was a bit high for really good conditions but Michele, the Group Leader, made sure we went to the best places. The hotel was very good and the food high quality., as were our lunch stop restaurants. The group had mixed experience but Michele coped well with this. Most Inspirational Moment Going down the steeper downhills - without falling. Thoughts on Group Leader Lovely! He worked very hard to make sure we had the best experience. I also felt my techniques improved with his teaching. Advice for Potential Travellers Check the brochure for skills level requirements. Be prepared for the group to have varying skills/ experience. Suggestions I would like to go again next year.

Lack of snow but still good! There was no fresh snow for my two weeks but we still managed to have extremely enjoyable days skiing. Most Inspirational Moment Skiing down the Fischleintal on perfect tracks. Thoughts on Group Leader Both group leaders Michele and Alex really good as usual. Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you read the guidance regarding grades and ask to speak to an expert if you are unsure. Three people on my second week did not and it could have made it difficult for some other guests and the group leaders. Suggestions Enjoy yourself and talk to your friends and encourage them to try something new.
