Weather Information
In the regions close to the Arctic Circle, temperatures during the season range from -30C to 5C (-22F to 41F). Christmas is normally the coldest (usually below -20C/-4), but the temperatures rise as the days lengthen, and early April can see temperatures around -10C to 5C (14F to 41F). Recent years have seen massive fluctuations in the space of a few weeks with lows of -40C (-40F) and highs of 7C (47F) just a few days apart. If the thought of such temperatures scares you, then think again. When dressed in the Arctic clothing provided, with insulated boots, woolly hat and large mittens, -20C (-4F) can feel very pleasant. The Arctic cold is a dry cold, there is usually no wind, and we will keep you active.
Daylight hours
At extreme latitudes, the days shorten and lengthen much faster. So, while in midwinter (December/January) the sun remains just below the horizon, by April there are more daylight hours than in the UK, and the midnight sun is only weeks away. Even in midwinter, it is not dark, as the sun is just above the horizon and there is plenty of light reflected off the snow.
Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are visible from September to late April on most clear nights at latitudes close to and above the Arctic Circle. They can be seen further south but will be less spectacular and less frequent. Solar activity is greater around the equinoxes (September and March), and at lower latitudes, this can be the best time to see them. At Basecamp, you need to have a clear window of weather with no clouds, and then your chances of seeing them are quite good as there is hardly any light pollution. With most Northern Lights tours starting from Arctic cities, you have to drive a bit of a distance to avoid the light pollution. The benefit of Basecamp is that, if the conditions are good, you just need to go outside and look up.
Spending Money
There are several extra excursions available: exact prices and details are confirmed locally, but the following provides a guide to what is normally available. As some of the excursions can be very popular, we strongly suggest you pre-book them with the Basecamp staff at your earliest convenience. Please note, these excursions require a minimum number of four participants and in some of these excursions there will be people from outside the group booked on.
— Downhill skiing or snowboarding: From €85 (equipment and ski pass) — Ice karting: €65 per person (minimum height: 4ft 11in/1.5m) — Sauna joga: €40 per person — Private sauna joga: €200 group (maximum five people) — Riisitunturi snowshoeing: €120 per person — Ice fishing: €75 per adult — Reindeer farm visit: €95 per person — Ice climbing: €185 per person — Snowmobile safari: Allow €105 per person (two per machine) or €140 (solo use) for approximately a 90-minute scenic safari around Ruka using four-stroke snowmobiles.
Important note on snowmobiling: All drivers must be over 17 years old, at least 4ft 7in (1.4m) tall and have a valid (car) driving licence and carry this with you while driving. You will be liable to pay for any damage to snowmobiles up to the excess on the insurance policy, which is approximately €1,000 per machine. You will be asked to sign a form agreeing to the above. This means, that in the unlikely event you damage a snowmobile in a major way, you will only be charged the excess and not the full cost of repair. Snowmobiles are not for everyone and can be difficult to master, however, damage is very rare if the drivers are alert and considerate.
On Saturdays, if you wish to snowmobile or downhill ski, a return transfer to Ruka is €120.
Tipping
Our local staff are paid fairly for their work; however, most wish to tip their guides in appreciation of their help and friendliness. This, of course, is not compulsory and depends on the service received. If you would like to leave a tip, as a guide we would suggest a total of approximately €15 for the leader and €10 for the staff at Basecamp.

Itinerary
Begin your adventure at Basecamp Oulanka, a welcoming complex of wooden buildings in a remote location overlooking Juuma Lake and backing onto Oulanka National Park. Around 6pm, say hei to your tour leader and fellow travellers in the main lodge of Basecamp Oulanka, where we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. Your tour leader then ensures a big Finnish welcome over dinner together. Want to explore further? Secure pre-tour nights through your sales representative.
In the morning, we are provided with all the equipment needed for a week of activities in Arctic conditions. Strapping on a pair of snowshoes, head straight into Oulanka National Park where we are taught the necessary skills for this activity. Our route (approximately 2hr 30min) takes us through forests and along the Kitka River, passing an old flour mill adjacent to the dramatic Myllykoski rapids. After lunch, you can choose to do further self-guided snowshoeing in the surrounding area or relax in Basecamp’s sauna or hot tub.
Experience the Scandinavian-born sport of cross-country skiing. By the lake, our instructor literally walks us through the basics. There may be a few tumbles to begin, but this is half the fun in the soft snow. After becoming more confident, we head onto the lake, gliding through the untouched snow. During your stay at Basecamp, there is the option of further unguided skiing in the area during your free time. Alternatively, you might wish to try kick sledging, a metal-frame sled you can use on your own and venture out around Basecamp.
After breakfast, take a bus transfer to a husky farm on the edge of Riisitunturi National Park, where we meet our dogsledding guide. The day begins with learning how to ride the sled and the importance of caring for the huskies correctly. We then head into the woods, where our dog teams are ready to take us on our 6mi (10km) mushing adventure. Our route follows a gently rolling forest trail into the wilderness. Travelling two per sled, you can really appreciate the serenity of this snow-laden landscape. We have lunch at the husky farm and the afternoon is free to experience some of the optional activities Basecamp offers. This evening, we head out for nighttime snowshoeing, in search of the Northern Lights.
Spend the day at the popular ski resort of Ruka. Your guide takes care of transfers and can book activities for you. Group transfers are included only to the designated areas and are scheduled at specific times, we advise checking at reception before making your activities booking. Downhill skiing and snowmobile safaris are available. See ‘Optional excursions’ in the Trip Notes for more. Due to operational reasons, the bookings for activities in Ruka need to be made by Tuesday.
Learn the ancient art of quinzee building. Provided shovels and spades, we create a mound of snow, which is hollowed out to make sleeping quarters (two to three per quinzee). You have the option of sleeping in your construction, but the lodge is just a short walk away if you prefer the warmth of your room.
Enjoy a free day with several options to make the most of the magical wilderness. Available activities include a guided snowshoeing trip to Riisitunturi National Park with its snow-covered trees creating a photogenic white forest, unguided cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, dogsledding or snowmobile safaris. As a farewell celebration, we have a wonderful four-course dinner back at Basecamp.
The trip ends after breakfast and we begin our return journey home. If you want to extend your time in Finland please speak to your sales representative who will be happy to advise.

Winter wonderland Fantastic week from start to finish. Great food and comfortable accommodation, equipment great also. Most Inspirational Moment Nothern lights Thoughts on Group Leader Our guide was a kind and sweet man, he was clearly passionate about nature and was more than happy to share his knowledge about our surroundings Advice for Potential Travellers Spend time getting to know the others in the group. Suggestions Only one negative comment- on the last day 13 people from the group went to Riisitunturi, by bus, we hiked with our guide and cooked a sausage on the fire. This cost 200€ per person. I think the cost of the outing was excessive based on what we did.

Wonderful week of variety in a stunning setting This was a lovely week of many different activities in beautiful surroundings staying in a comfortable environment. Most Inspirational Moment Husky dog sledding Thoughts on Group Leader Timo was excellent. He really knew the wilderness environment and was in touch with it. A calm soul who really enhanced the whole experience and was very helpful. Advice for Potential Travellers If you want an introduction to many winter activities, this is the holiday for you. The fact that all specialist clothing and equipment is provided is a real bonus. Basecamp Oulanka is very comfortable and they feed you extremely well, you certainly won't go hungry. Suggestions The sauna and hot tub are a welcome treat at the end of activities. All in all a fabulous week which I wouldn't hesitate in recommending.

My first winter activity trip I normally go somewhere warm in February, but thought I would try something different this year. Reading the reviews convinced me to try this trip, and it was a very good decision. Most Inspirational Moment Walking in snowshoes on a forest trail and stopping to light a fire to toast marshmallows. Dog sledding from the husky farm. Driving a snowmobile for the first time. Thoughts on Group Leader Both Tuomas and Elina were both very friendly and good teachers of the outdoor skills. Tuomas in particular was a great advocate of saunas. Advice for Potential Travellers Invest in some pairs of good merino blend socks and a hat. Everything else is provided, but your own base layer is a good idea to ensure a good fit. Day time temperatures during our week in February varied from -20C to +1C, so a selection of layers was key. The sunshine and lack of wind meant -20C was not a problem. The rooms have underfloor heating, so we were advised to lay everything out at night to dry and air clothes. Suggestions Overall a trip that lived up to high expectations.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing week, stunning scenery, great group and fantastic guide! Most Inspirational Moment So many fantastic moments! I think the day that stands out most was having fun making and sleeping in a quinzee, as it's such a once in a lifetime experience. Thoughts on Group Leader Elina was absolutely amazing, really friendly, helpful and always checking that everyone was warm and happy. She also ran a guide hour on several days where she talked about Finnish seasons, culture and history, which were really interesting. Advice for Potential Travellers The kit provided was brilliant and we had easy access to more kit if needed so beyond a thermal base layer you genuinely don't need to bring many clothes at all.

Basecamp Oulanka Brilliant week in the snow of Finland learning new skills and having fun. Most Inspirational Moment All the activities were awesome Thoughts on Group Leader All the staff at Basecamp Oulanka were welcoming and helpful. We had 2 instructors / leaders who were brilliant. Advice for Potential Travellers As other reviews, you do only need your base layers as Basecamp provide everything else. The snowmobiling was extra cost, but well worth it! Suggestions The trips on Saturday cost extra - 120 euros each to go to the National Park! The scenery at the park was breath-taking and is where the promotional photo's etc are of.

What an amazing week! I recently embarked on the Finnish Wilderness Week with Exodus, and it was an experience of a lifetime! Basecamp Oulanka is a charming retreat surrounded by forests and Juuma Lake. The week was filled with many winter activities, including snowshoeing in the snow-covered forests, cross-country skiing by the lake, and an unforgettable dogsledding adventure, despite being new to winter sports the guides were incredibly helpful and patient with us. The accommodation at Basecamp Oulanka was superb, offering warm rooms, and the provision of all necessary Arctic equipment made the adventure comfortable and enjoyable.

Northern lights A fantastic week in Finland with a great group lead by a super leader. Most Inspirational Moment There were many inspirational moments but the mushing was probably the most inspirational. Thoughts on Group Leader Martti was fantastic. Very knowledgeable. Very patient. Looked after everyone’s needs. Advice for Potential Travellers In previous reviews a lot has been said about the gear provided. It is perfectly adequate but you may wish to bring some of your own stuff e.g. a good down jacket, some snow shoes for getting around the base camp and maybe a ski jacket and trousers if you are intending to spend a day (downhill)skiing in Ruka. Suggestions Although it was only a week it seemed much longer!

Superb adventure from start to finish I had high expectations for this holiday but it was even more amazing than I could’ve imagined! Every day was packed with new experiences and challenges, all overseen by expert guides who were a joy to spend our week with. Base camp is warm and welcoming with great food and hot drinks and blazing fire on tap. Most Inspirational Moment The stunning surrounds of the National Parks, knee deep in snow with a great group of fellow travellers. Thoughts on Group Leader The group leader was exceptional - a passionate advocate for the nature he helped us discover, gave expert tuition for the new skills we needed - all delivered with great humour and sense of fun. Advice for Potential Travellers Don’t think twice about this trip - if you love nature, discovering the great outdoors, and want to feel safe learning new skills - it’s a must! Suggestions A perfect weeek

Life in the freezer This was a great week of learning skills – cross country skiing, snowshoeing, igloo building – and enjoying the quietness of the Finnish wilderness. The food and social side were great too! Most Inspirational Moment There were several highlights, but I spent the last day completing a local hiking trail alone in the forest and snow. It was stunningly pretty, and an achievement to complete. Thoughts on Group Leader Marti was great. Hard working, trying his best to accommodate various requests for activities, and a good combination of looking after us and getting us to explore independently. Advice for Potential Travellers The trip notes say that Basecamp supply all outdoor clothing, and you only need evening clothes. This is true, but you might well be more comfortable in your own outdoor or ski clothing that you are familiar with. For our trip, the average temperature was - 15 to - 20 deg C (the same as your freezer!), and a balaclava or covering for chin and cheeks is recommended.

Wow, wow, wow!! Wow is the only word for this trip! I was truly blown away by the breathtaking scenery and the incredible experiences and adventures of this trip. A real holiday of a life time – I can’t recommend it highly enough. Most Inspirational Moment Too many to mention! The husky dog sledding was incredible (definitely upgrade to the 20k option in you can). The snow shoeing adventures around base camp were fantastic and the optional extra to visit the breath taking Riisitunturi National Park is a must. Finally the excitement of getting to sleep in a quinzee you built, is a truly memorable experience (and not as cold as you’d image, even when it’s -16.c outside) Thoughts on Group Leader Martti was an exceptional leader, he was very friendly and knowledgeable and above all made the activities fun for everyone. The rest of the staff at base camp were friendly and the food was delicious. Advice for Potential Travellers Don’t hesitate - just book it, you really won’t regret it!! Although they do provide the clothing needed for the week I would definitely recommend taking your own clothing if you would prefer, especially base and mid layers including fleeces (as theirs were a little ‘tired’) Their boots and outer layers were of good quality

The best A great itinerary of fantastic activities. Enough spare time to go and snow shoe or cross country ski in the area in any spare time. Most Inspirational Moment The 20km husky drive and optional Ski Mobile trip were the best single moments for me but I also hugely enjoyed the optional walk high up in the national park that is visited by Instagram photographers to capture the beautiful snow sculpted trees. In the spare time a few of us took the skis out and set off on the cross country trails at our own pace which was a good taster for a possible cross country ski holiday in the future. Thoughts on Group Leader Marti was great, very friendly and helpful. Advice for Potential Travellers Go for all of the extras, definitely extend the husky ride from 10km to 20km as you go further out into the higher up areas which are so beautiful. If you are worried that you cannot do an activity then you can always skip it. Suggestions We didn't need any cash Euros except for the tip, all the charges went on the room (under your own name if shared). Pack light they give you boots and around 3 outer layers, thermos, towel, hair dryer.

Fantastic Fun in Finland We had the most amazing week at the logging lodge with Elina. What a huge variety of activities to try out. Our 16 and 18 year old daughters loved it too, particularly the dog sledding day and the downhill skiing in Ruka. Cooking pancakes and sausages over a fire was also a highlight. Elina was knowledgable, friendly and inclusive. Would really recommend to families with a sense of adventure. Most Inspirational Moment Dig sledding Thoughts on Group Leader Fantastic! Advice for Potential Travellers Try everything. Take your sense of adventure. All equipment provided was more than adequate.,

Finnish Wilderness Week 14th-28th I really enjoyed the trip and it was Greta to see the transition from winter to spring as we were the last trip of the season. The most enjoyable part was the husky ride, so much I went twice. But also, Elina and Ismo really took care to make sure we enjoyed Finnish traditions, and we cooked pancakes and bread on an open fire as well as quinzee building and first aid in the wildness. I would definitely recommend this trip of you want a jam packed holiday and to tick off a few things from your bucket list. The guides are fantastic and you really feel a sense of being in the wilderness, especially of you are staying in the loggers lodge Most Inspirational Moment Do selling and baking bread on the fire Thoughts on Group Leader Elina was fantastic, so friendly and knowledgeable, she loves the first and nature and is so open minded. Ismo who helped her was also fantastic and he had a lot of knowledge about Finnish traditions and nature Advice for Potential Travellers Don't expect 5 star accomodation as one of the people did when I went, she was shocked, bit I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting mountain hut standard Suggestions The food was spectacular and it was fantastic to experience delicious traditional Finnish food and drink

Magical week in a snowy wonderland Thoroughly enjoyed a fantastic week at base camp. Scenery is absolutely stunning and activities are varied and fun. At the end of January/ early Feb there was plenty of daylight to make the most of everything on offer. There are superb snowshoe walks right from the front door, the little bear trail in particular. Accommodation is comfortable with plentiful tasty food and good variety. All staff work hard to make your holiday as enjoyable as possible. Although the clothes provided are perfectly acceptable, if you already own your own cold weather gear ( ski jacket / fleeces) you can wear these too. Lucky to share our holiday with a friendly bunch of fellow travellers who helped make it extra memorable. We would highly recommend this holiday to anyone thinking of going. Most Inspirational Moment Difficult to say - so many but the scenery and tranquility was splendid. Thoughts on Group Leader All base camp staff were friendly and helpful. Advice for Potential Travellers If you live near Birmingham airport do enquire about the Birmingham flight (we found out about it after we arrived) Take plenty of warm woolen socks, not necessarily all thick ones you will probably need to wear 2 or 3 pairs at a time. If you like downhill skiing the slopes in Ruka looked very quiet. Suggestions As others have said before if you are thinking of booking this trip then do......you will not regret it.

A happy time with new friends, lots to do in a glorious place. Very special week. Whats not to like? Dog sledding on a snowy christmas morning, the fabulous walk we took just the two of us on the Bear Trail, the group snow shoe hike up in the Riisitunturi National Park or the laughing tumbles practicing our cross country skiiing, or the group dinners with lots of joyful tales of our days, and a sip or two of Cloudberry Liquer? Elina always ready with a grin, a story or some good advice. The Oulanka Basecamp staff with their smiles at all times of the day, and hearty offerings of food and drink. We will return! Most Inspirational Moment What to choose? All of it, really. Thoughts on Group Leader Everyone of our guides were brilliant - helpful, friendly, informative and professional. Elina especially was great and contributed to making our activities such fun. Advice for Potential Travellers Just do it. A brilliant way to spend a snowy unchristmasy but very special Christmas Suggestions Nothing to add except we want to go back. Or do another Exodus trip......

Wilderness Adventure The experience overall was very good on many lelvels. The basecamp was not luxorious but the people are very welcoming and it is very clean. My only criticism is about the food, I cannot understand how it one can serve frozen berries with ice cream as dessert when it is -20 outside! Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the Northern Lights and the Husky sledging Thoughts on Group Leader very nice indeed, lovely person Advice for Potential Travellers yes, bring warm undergarments!! the rest they provide. Suggestions Not at this stage, just better food please and more warm choices.

Enjoyable week of snowy activities A wonderful week in beautiful surroundings and well organised activites by the team at basecamp. An opportunity to experience the full beauty of Finland and try a variety of snowy activities. Comfortable warm lodge, varied and plentiful wholesome food, a welcoming and client-oriented basecamp team and a great mixiture of snow sports and actiivites. One of my favourite Exodus holidays. Most Inspirational Moment I love everything, but in particular the dogsledding. It was very unexpectd to walk into someone's home and be so welcomed. A great experience all round. The dogs are so well looked after and well behaved. The owners were adorable. Thoughts on Group Leader Fab. The Exodus leader was great. Our team leader at Basecamp was brilliant. She did all the right things and ensured that everyone had equal experince of activities regardless of level and experience. Advice for Potential Travellers Do it. It's a great experience, and take a dressing gown to get you from your apartment to the sauna. Suggestions Thank you to Millie Reeves for answering all my questions (even the silly ones) and taking time out to talk me through (on email) the itinerary. It really helped.
