Trip For You
This trip is rated Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.
Although this is a cultural trip, some days (such as those in Petra) can be long and tiring. To do the optional 800 or so steps up to the Monastery or the climb to the High Place of Sacrifice, you should have a reasonable level of fitness. Your leader can provide further advice about these hikes. It is not advisable to visit the High Place of Sacrifice if you suffer from vertigo, as there are some very steep, narrow steps and cliffs. The leader will show where the route to the High Place of Sacrifice starts but does not accompany people wishing to take this route.
Wadi Rum camping: Although the campsite has plumbed toilets and showers, they are basic and hot water may be limited. Our private Exodus camp is, however, often a highlight for guests.
Petra accommodation: Demand for rooms near Petra is extremely high. Over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The limited amount of accommodation and high demand can result in varying quality in both the accommodation and service. However, we stay at these hotels as they are well-located for our trip to Petra.
Ramadan is expected to run from 10 March-10 April 2024 and 28 February-29 March 2025. One of the most important periods in the Islamic calendar, it is a special time to visit a Muslim country. Each evening, the streets empty as people head home to break the fast, followed by an air of festivity upon their return. Our leaders and drivers choose to work at this time so we continue to run trips; however, their energy levels may be slightly lower than normal. Many tourist sites, restaurants and shops will have an amended schedule, but your tour leader will know how to adapt the itinerary to still experience all the inclusions on this trip and maximise your experience during this special time.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts and two dinners are included on this trip.
When not half board, we usually eat in local restaurants and the leader arranges bookings for those in the group who would like to join. We suggest you budget around 20 Jordanian dinars (US$28) per person per non-included meals. If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in choice; however, meze is almost always available in restaurants and is a good, filling vegetarian choice. There is a good choice of seafood available when at the Red Sea. At the Wadi Rum camp, we enjoy a traditional dinner called zarb, which is cooked underground. This consists of rice with a selection including chicken, lamb and vegetables. Vegetables are cooked separately from the meat.
Alcoholic drinks: Alcohol is available in Jordan, but not widely. Many hotels do not sell alcohol but often allow it to be brought in from elsewhere. It is best to plan if you’ll want a drink, your tour leader can tell you what’s possible and may be able to arrange a stop at a supermarket or liquor store (depending on location). In Petra, the unique Cave Bar in Petra Guesthouse is open to the public. A less expensive option is the bar in the Petra Palace Hotel, which is also open to all.
Transportation
For most of this trip, we use an air-conditioned bus with local drivers. Occasionally, we use two vehicles for the group. To reach the Wadi Rum camp, and to explore the desert, we use basic 4x4 vehicles, owned by the Bedouin family that hosts us. The vehicles are appropriate for local desert travel but may fall below normal vehicle safety standards expected on our trips. As there are no other vehicles available, and as we are not travelling by road, we feel they are an adequate means of transport.

Weather Information
October to November and March to April are very popular in Jordan as it is cooler, around 24C (75F) in the day and down to 8C (46F) at night. Rain is more likely, but protracted bad weather is unlikely. It is hot and dry, but not unpleasant, throughout Jordan in the summer. Daytime maximum temperatures are around 32C (89F) in Amman. Jerash temperatures are the same.
Wadi Rum is around 30C (86F) on average in summer, though it can get as high as 40C (104F). It is usually cooler (30C/86F) at night. In winter, it is much cooler and can get as low as 10C (50C) during the day. In the evening, it can hit freezing point. There are occasions when there is rain or even snow in the desert. If weather conditions require, we may need to modify the itinerary or the camp location for your comfort and safety.
Aqaba is very hot when the air is still, but there is usually a breeze. Rain is unusual but possible.
The Dead Sea air temperatures vary from around 14C (57F) in winter up to 37C (98F) in summer. The water temperature doesn’t drop below 20C (68F).
As with many countries in the world, seasons can go on longer than usual so it is advisable to always check the weather of the country you are travelling to a week or two before your trip so you can pack appropriately.
Spending Money
Optional excursions
There are various excursions possible on this trip – the leader will provide more details on arrival. All prices are subject to change.
— Petra by night: Follow the trail from the Siq to the Treasury in candlelight, where you are offered tea and traditional music by the local Bedouins, 17 dinars (US$24) per person. Please note, this is not possible every evening and it can get crowded. This is low-key entertainment, so it is best to go without expectations. — Little Petra: A smaller but still impressive version of the main Petra site. It costs 13 dinars (US$19) for this guided tour, including transport. Please note this cost does not include entrance to Little Petra, which is free. This is an option on the morning we travel to Aqaba. If the whole group does this option, we check out of the hotel beforehand. — Turkish bath: 22 dinars (US$31) per person — Camel rides in Wadi Rum: Camel rides provided by the local Bedouins may be possible in Wadi Rum. It costs 20 dinars (US$28) per person for a 45-minute to one-hour ride. — Bethany Beyond the Jordan: 25 dinars (US$35) per person (paid locally) — Amman entry fees: The main sites are included in our city tour at the beginning of the trip. However, if you arrive a day early or have free time you may like to visit Mosque Abdallah. The entrance is 2 dinars (US$3).
Tipping
Our local staff are paid fairly for their work. However, while tipping may not be common in your home country, it is part of the culture in Jordan and is generally expected within tourism and many other areas of Jordanian life and is best done in Jordanian dinars.
For tipping your driver, hotel staff and other local staff, we recommend a tipping kitty. Your leader can advise on the amount; as a guide, expect it to be around 45 dinars (US$60) for this trip. This kitty can be placed in the hands of one of the group members to look after and the leader will advise where it is appropriate to tip. If preferred, however, the leader can manage this for the group. The kitty is there to ease the confusion and embarrassment of not knowing how much to tip.
Most clients also wish to tip their tour leader and as a guide we suggest 30 dinars (US$40) per person for this trip. Most groups prefer to present the money to the leader at the end of the week in an envelope. The amount is at your discretion and our suggested amount is to be used as a guideline only.

Hotels and a private Bedouin campOn this Jordan adventure, we stay in a range of accommodations: a three-star hotel in downtown Amman, a modest but well-located hotel in Petra, and an unforgettable stay in a simple Bedouin camp in the desert. We end in style, relaxing in a five-star hotel by the Dead Sea. Below are the accommodations typically used on this trip: Amman: Hotel Khan Khediwe (nights 1 & 2) In Amman, we usually stay at Khan Khediwe, a three-star hotel in the bustle of downtown Amman. It's ideally placed for our adventures, close to a market and within walking distance of the Roman amphitheatre and shopping areas. Petra: Hotel in Wadi Musa (nights 3-5) We spend three nights in Wadi Musa, the town adjacent to Petra. Demand for rooms near Petra is very high; over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The hotels are modest but well located. Some are within walking distance of the main entrance to the Red Rose City, others are no more than a 10-minute transfer away. Places we stay include Edom Hotel, Petra Plaza, Petra Palace, Amra Palace and La Maison among others. Wadi Rum: Exodus Private Camp (night 6) Used exclusively by our groups, this permanent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is a highlight for many travellers. We sleep in simple, traditional tents sheltered by rugged stone cliffs and enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bedouin hosts. In the evening, they serve us a zarb dinner, cooked underground in the traditional manner, while the rest of the night is typically spent around the campfire, chatting and sharing an unforgettable experience. Aqaba: Lacosta Hotel (night 7) In the heart of modern Aqaba, the four-star Lacosta Hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and the Red Sea. The rooms come with furniture and beds from the Middle East, while the hotel also has a gym and restaurant. Dead Sea: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (night 8) A standout stay for many is the Holiday Inn at the Dead Sea. Checking into this five-star property allows us to kick back and relax, perhaps in one of the many pools or with a float in the salty Dead Sea waters from the private beach. There’s also a free-to-use gym and a selection of excellent restaurants and bars. Worth knowing Demand for accommodation in Wadi Musa (Petra) is high; this can create problems with hot water and plumbing. In general, the accommodation is more basic compared to the rest of Jordan. Single supplements are available for this trip but are not applicable at Wadi Rum. If you are looking for a higher standard of accommodation, you may be interested in our Kingdoms of Jordan Premium Adventure, which follows a similar itinerary and stays at premium accommodation.

Itinerary
Welcome to Amman, the capital of Jordan, where our adventure begins. There are free transfers to the hotel from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) for all customers today. Please note, transfers should be booked with your sales representative at least two weeks before the tour starts. Accommodation: Hotel Khan Khediwe (or similar)
We drive north to Jerash this morning, the largest Roman ruins in Jordan. Buried for centuries under blown sand, the ancient architecture here is remarkably well preserved and an exploration of the dramatic oval forum, colonnaded main streets, two theatres and impressive Temple of Zeus provides a fascinating insight into life in the ancient world. After a good look around, we head back to Amman for a city tour, which takes in the hilltop ruins of the Citadel, a site occupied by various civilisations from the Bronze Age, plus the 6,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and the old city. Accommodation: Hotel Khan Khediwe (or similar)
Today is a long driving day as we head down the King’s Highway, which takes us up and down huge wadis (valleys). However, we have several stops of interest en route including Madaba, where we visit St George’s Church to admire its mosaic floor, considered the oldest map of Palestine in existence. We then make the short drive to Mount Nebo, where, from this 2,295ft (700m) high viewpoint overlooking the Dead Sea to Palestine and Israel beyond, Moses is said to have first seen the Promised Land. It’s then to the magnificent fortified town of Kerak, a Crusader stronghold dominated by a medieval castle. Further south, we reach Petra, the premier historic site in Jordan and one of the most outstanding ancient cities in the world. Accommodation: Petra hotel – see accommodation section for more detail
This morning, we have the option to take a guided tour through Little Petra (extra cost, payable locally) or you can relax at our hotel before we join the modern Desert Highway and head south to Wadi Rum. The purpose of Little Petra is not clear; however, archaeologists believe it was probably a suburb of Petra where visiting traders on the Silk Road may have stayed. It’s then to the UNESCO-listed Wadi Rum, where dramatic sandstone mountains rise from the sandy desert floor. It was here that Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the First World War and where sections of the 1962 epic film were shot. After we’ve checked into our private Exodus camp, our Bedouin hosts take us for an approximately two-hour 4×4 ride to explore the protected area. We visit the highlights, have time to sample Bedouin tea, and then watch the sunset from the vantage point of a rock formation. We then return to our camp, where we enjoy Bedouin hospitality with a traditional zarb dinner, which is cooked underground. After, we learn about Bedouin culture through interacting with the family who run the camp. Accommodation: Exodus private camp (permanent Bedouin camp)
We wake in dramatic desert scenery and then head to Aqaba, a port and resort by the Red Sea, best known for having beautiful coral reefs. There is time to relax on a beach with transport and entrance included. You can add to the experience with optional snorkelling and lunch packages (extra cost), which your leader can explain. There are several good restaurants in Aqaba for our evening meal together. Accommodation: Lacosta Hotel (or similar)
Leaving the Red Sea, we transfer (4hr 30min) to the Dead Sea, where salt levels of around 34 percent keep you effortlessly afloat. There’s plenty of free time to experience this extraordinary phenomenon and to cover yourself with the Dead Sea mud, which is said to have healing powers, before cooling off in the swimming pool. There’s also the chance to visit Bethany Beyond the Jordan, said to be the site of Jesus Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist, a moment marking the new era of Christianity. This is an optional trip that can be booked and paid for locally. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the Dead Sea hotel and the entire visit usually lasts 1hr 45min, including the drive to/from the hotel. Those who do not wish to visit the site will check into the hotel. This evening, we have a group dinner to celebrate our time in Jordan and say our farewells. Accommodation: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (or similar)
Breakfast marks our final meal, an excellent chance to reminisce about an adventure packed with excitement. To make your return journey home easier, there’s a free shared transfer back to the airport. Alternatively, if you’d like further days to relax by the Dead Sea, speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.

Absolutely fantastic! This really was a wonderful trip. So much packed into just one week – you’ll see all the main sights and more: Jerash – incredible; Petra – stunning; Wadi Rum – breathtaking. Make sure you opt for the meal with the local family in Wadi Musa; that for me was one of the highlights of the trip. Most Inspirational Moment Too many to just pick one out. Every day brought new sights and experiences. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group was fortunate to have Ahmad as the Group Leader. We could not have asked for a better guide to take us through Jordan. Friendly, knowledgeable, professional and with a great sense of humour - a true ambassador for the wonderful country of Jordan. Advice for Potential Travellers Go with an open mind and go with the flow. On a trip like this, sometimes you just can't stick to the itinerary. For example, our group were visiting Madaba and the King of Jordan rocked up (yes, really), meaning that we couldn't visit two of the planned sights that particular day. But Ahmad, our brilliant guide, managed to take the group to one alternative venue that day and then squeezed in Mount Nebo on our penultimate day at the Dead Sea. Flexibility is key. Suggestions Stop hesitating - just go!

Fantastic Jordan is everything I expected and more, sadly for the country tourism is down but that was good for us who had the sights practically to ourselves – and what sights they are. Marvellous country, the history and architecture- so enthusiastically brought to life by Muayed, the people, the food. Absolutely fabulous! Thoughts on Group Leader Muayed Advice for Potential Travellers Don’t worry about a thing!

An amazing trip of a lifetimec This was a wonderful trip of a lifetime! Because of the unstable political situation in the Middle East I was unsure whether to go or not but I was so pleased that I decided not to cancel. Jordan is so full of history and sites of religious significance and the people so friendly and welcoming. Ahmad, our guide was wonderful and obviously proud of his country, he not only showed us the unforgettable historic sights but also explained the culture of its people, introducing us to many of his ‘cousins’ who offered us very interesting insights into the foods and locally produced goods available! The added bonus of traveling when we did was that there were very few other tourists at the major sites, for obvious reasons, including Petra. Most Inspirational Moment Petra had to be the most awe inspiring point of the trip, it was magnificent! Having walked around all the amazing tombs, monuments and Roman ruins during the day we then went back in the evening to see it by candle light. This was a very moving experience with local Bedouin musicians playing traditional instruments creating a very contemplative atmosphere. Thoughts on Group Leader Ahmad was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable and obviously proud of his country and its heritage. He went out of his way to make sure that everyone was catered for as we were a very mixed age group with varying levels of fitness. The day we went to Madaba we discovered that the King of Jordan was visiting the same day so it was very crowded and many roads were closed off for the visit. Ahmad made sure we negotiated the crowds and, after seeing the King drive past (and wave to us!) he took us to a restaurant, owned by a ‘cousin’ were we all had coffee and waited for the crowds to disperse. This delay meant that we could not visit Mt Nebo that day but Ahmad made sure we visited on the way to the Dead Sea on the last day. Instead he took us to Little Petra which was lovely in the evening sun. We could not have wished for a better, more knowledgeable and helpful group leader than Ahmad. Advice for Potential Travellers When staying at the Bedouin camp overnight you will definitely need a sleeping bag liner, the facilities are very basic and the bed covers not very clean. Also it would be advisable to take walking boots as through the whole week you will be walking on quite rough rocky and/or sandy terrain. Suggestions Jordan is a very safe country with so much to see, once there is peace in Gaza please don’t hesitate to visit.

Simply Stunning It is difficult to sum up what was so wonderful about this holiday. We spent a week experiencing the history and people of this lovely country under the enthusiastic expert and entertaining guidance of our guide Muayad. The itinerary was packed with so much, including the stunning archaeological sites in Amman, Jerash and Petra and stayed in the camp in Wadi Rum. We also met local families who cooked national dishes for us and it was a delight to talk with them in their own homes. Every day brought new adventures and delights. Most Inspirational Moment Almost impossible to say, each day brought a new favourite moment. Thoughts on Group Leader Muayad was outstanding. He was friendly, knowledgeable, entertaining and his love for his country and it's people shone through everything he said and did. Advice for Potential Travellers Jordan is safe!

An outstanding week This was my first holiday with Exodus, and what an amazing experience! From the very first moment when we walked around Amman and ate freshly cooked falafel in freshly cooked bread for lunch – our adventure started. The incredible sights, the sounds, the overwhelmingly hospitable people, the fascinating history – every day was different and a new adventure. Most Inspirational Moment The best experience was having a home cooked meal in Fatima’s house (upside down meal) in Petra. Such an inspiring lady, beautiful food, with added touches of henna on your hand, and learning to write your name in Arabic. Thoughts on Group Leader Muayad was a wonderful tour guide. He was authentic and so hospitable. He was a mine of information, passionate about his country and people, he genuinely cared about us a group, and those we encountered in our different experiences along the way. He provided just the best holiday and created memories that I’ll never forget. Advice for Potential Travellers Just enjoy every day and absorb everything this beautiful country offers you. Suggestions Highly recommend Exodus as a tour company - offering holidays that genuinely care for the communities and country that you are visiting. Jordan is an incredible country that needs to be explored and experienced!

Jordan We spent a week travel around this beautiful country and learnt an incredible amount. Most Inspirational Moment Every day was a highlight but eating in two Jordanian households has to be above everything. We felt hugely privileged to be able to see the lives of local people. The whole country is an inspiration with fabulous historical sites, friendly people, stunning scenery and excellent food. Thoughts on Group Leader Muayad Mismar is such an inspiring leader. He has great knowledge, a passion for his country and its people , energy and fabulous interaction with both us and local people. Simply one of the best. Advice for Potential Travellers Don’t worry about security. Jordan is extremely safe and we never worried for even a second. Suggestions I am so glad I went.

The Best Experience I arrived to Jordan by myself because I booked the tour last minute. This was my first trip outside of the Uk since my husband passed away at the end of October 2023. I can’t find the right words to express how this tour has made me feel. I’ve returned home to the Uk a different person to the one who left. Jordan and its people are truly gifted. The moment I stepped off the aeroplane the Exodus staff were there, waiting for me. Not for one moment did I feel afraid. The group I spent the week with will remain friends for life. The laughter we all shared together daily was not at all expected. Our guide Mikhled was superb every minute of every day. Knowledgeable and attentive to us all. Jordan itself is rich in culture and beauty, the sights we visited were stunning. There wasn’t a single day that passed where I didn’t feel blown away with what I was seeing and learning. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves history, culture and being alive. The bus journeys were also easy and very comfortable. I suffer with lower back problems but this was also very manageable for me. Most Inspirational Moment I accidently dropped my purse in a taxi. I didn't even know I'd lost it until the hotel staff in Petra called my room to tell me the taxi driver had returned it. The people in Jordan are the most honest, genuine people you could ever wish to meet. This was very inspiring to me. Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled Advice for Potential Travellers Open your heart Suggestions Not only am I recently bereaved with my husband passing away, I also have issues with my lower back. Unfortunately for me this flared up whilst I was on the tour. My guide Mikhled took extra care of me making sure this did not affect my experience in any way during my time. I can't express how heart warming this made me feel. Thank you Exodus. You clearly employ very good people.

One of the best experiences of my life! Jordan and Petra in particular has been on my bucket list for a while and this trip did not disappoint. I was blessed to be a part of a small group and we all got on so well, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Most Inspirational Moment Too many, though the two days we spent in a nearly-empty Petra were just breath-taking. If you can make it up to Monastery and/or the High Place of Sacrifice you will be well rewarded with stunning scenery along the way. The High Place of Sacrifice is a slightly easier climb, and the long walk down through the Wadi was spectacular. Nothing really beats the feeling of anticipation walking down the deserted Siq and seeing the Treasury peak out from behind the canyon. The preservation of Jerash was incredible, exploring was a close second to Petra. Thoughts on Group Leader We were a small but lively group and Mikhled did an amazing job keeping us all entertained and happy. He went out of his way to answer our questions and showed us loads of historic images about how the sites we had visited were discovered. He kept us organised with all the different trip options, which was no mean feat. I'd love to go on this trip again but would have to guarantee Mikhled was the leader. Advice for Potential Travellers Pack a small bag for the transfer into Wadi Rum as your suitcase won't be going with you, and if you are a winter departure pack layers! Also another small bag with swimming gear for Aqaba as you'll go straight from Wadi Rum to the Read Sea resort. It's a action-packed itinerary, so just embrace it and sleep either on the mini or back home. I did all the optional extras - Petra by Night, Little Petra, camel rides in Wadi Rum, snorkelling in Aqaba and Bethany-by-the-Jordan and do not regret a single thing. Jordan is not a cheap country but doing all these really added to my enjoyment of the trip and the experience as a whole. Suggestions Just go. Jordan is safe, despite everything happening in surrounding countries. The people are kind, humble, welcoming and eager to show off their country. The food was amazing (coming from a notoriously fussy eater) and there's something for everyone. The whole trip was such an incredible experience, I've tried my best to put it into words but can't really do it justice.

Jordan is a must This was our first trip with Exodus & our first group tour. It was an exceptional holiday Most Inspirational Moment The arrival at The Treasury in Petra from the Siq (Path into Petra) Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled our group leader was an inspirational guide & together with our fellow travellers made the trip very special Advice for Potential Travellers Hope that Mikhled is your guide. Do all of the additional optional trips within the holiday to enhance the experience. There is time to sleep when you get back home ??. The Jordanian people were very welcoming and I would urge others to take this tour. They deserve our patronage particularly at this difficult time for the Middle East. I felt very safe, in fact much safer than in certain cities back in Europe Suggestions The experience with Exodus exceeded our expectations and I would definitely recommend this trip & Exodus to others

Jordan - a country not to be missed! A most memorable trip discovering Jordan’s sites, people and culture with an excellent guide and great company Most Inspirational Moment It’s truly difficult to pick out one most inspiring moment when there was one on each day but the walk up to the Place of High Sacrifice in Petra was certainly one - a quieter backwater with stunning views and places to explore Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled was a very knowledgeable guide with great people skills - very personable with a great sense of humour and the patience of a saint. Advice for Potential Travellers Layers of clothing essential for a February trip and a walking pole for Petra is incredibly useful Suggestions Jordan is a fabulous country, full of contrasts and its people are warm and engaging. It felt like a very safe place to be. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Absolutely Amazing!!! Our family of four (2 adults, 2 teens) had the most incredible adventure in Jordan, which was our first Exodus tour. This was a full-on week but the itinerary was carefully and thoughtfully planned out so no day was too much or too little of anything. Overall, it was a fantastic balance of sight-seeing, driving, walking, hiking, exploring, listening to history, free time, eating!!, visiting tourist spots, and going off the beaten trail. Our whole family highly recommends visiting Jordan and this tour! Most Inspirational Moment Every day was inspirational and 'the best day ever' but these rated the highest: 1.Eating at Ali Baba's 2.Petra 3.Wadi Rum (desert night) 4. Dead Sea 5. The food, I had no idea what an eating extravaganza this was going to be! Thoughts on Group Leader We lucked out having Ibrahim, who is a truly talented group leader. In addition to his past careers / 20+ years as a guide, he is also very well traveled himself and this combination gives him fantastic skills in being able to patiently and effectively deal with and understand all the different personalities / cultures you may have in your group. He has a unique skill of anticipating questions or situations and handles them in a very diplomatic and professional way. He has a great sense of humour too! Ibrahim communicates very clearly and gives enough info as needed. He constantly encourages questions and loves conversation. He also does not push anything on you but informs you and lets you make your own decisions (ex: buying extra excursions or buying anything in the markets). What we noticed and appreciated was that he called us travellers, not tourists. * I am GF so brought myself some crackers and snacks to have (just in case). I told Ibrahim I was GF to make sure there would be rice available and he went to a specialty shop and bought me GF pita bread so I could enjoy all the mezze (dips) we'd be having all week. So thoughtful of him!! Advice for Potential Travellers I read lots of the reviews / tips before we went and here are a few things I would like to pass along: 1. We were very fortunate with wonderful weather in Dec/Jan but it could be a gamble (bring layers for this time of year) 2. If you are wondering if you are 'fit enough' to walk to the monastery it is good to know that your group leader leaves you at this point and you do this part of the trek/hike independently so you can easily go at your own pace. Our group of 10 were of all ages and fitness abilities so we broke off into smaller groups and everyone reached the monastery 3. No need to pre-order a 'lunch box' during the day in Petra, the restaurant that provides it is right there before you go up to the monastery and you can order off their menu 4. Bring cat / dog treats (I am so glad we did!) 5. Bring a small gift for the host dinner family (we gave a bag of British chocolates to the kids. Wish I brought stickers and a few little trinkets for the kids) 6. We did not need the towels we brought but if you have space bring them just incase 7. Bring water shoes other than flip flops / we had tevas and they were fine (ones that stay on your feet) 8. Bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses even in winter 9. We used a mix of local currency and credit card. We brought dollars but did not need them. We could not get money at LHR so got it upon arrival at the airport. You can also get money at the hotel or at a local bank. 10. We brought some snacks but you have plenty of opportunities to get snacks along the way Suggestions Go to Jordan, you will not regret it!

Wonderful week in Jordan! I loved Jordan. I loved all of it. Such ancient land with complex history, there were moments where it felt like time itself was staring at you. Petra is magnificent; Wadi Rum calms the mind; the river Jordan nourishes the spirit; and local people’s hospitality warms the heart. Most Inspirational Moment I remember the moment I fell in love with Jordan: we were wandering around in the Amman citadel and just after 4pm the call for prayer came, in that moment I knew I was in trouble. I left a part of my heart in Jordan and I've come back heartbroken. Thoughts on Group Leader We had an amazing leader, Abdullah, who was warm, kind, humorous, and who made everything that much more special. Advice for Potential Travellers Don't worry about anything, just enjoy it!

Hot! Went in September 2023 and the temperature was too much to bare. However, Jordan is a must see country. The architecture is mind blowing. All the hotels were comfortable, safe and clean. Vegetarians and Pescatarians are not well catered for. There’s only so much pita bread and baba ghanoush you can eat on a daily basis! Jordan is landlocked so fish is not recommended unless you’re at the Red Sea. Most Inspirational Moment Petra - walking along the Siq towards the Treasury, climbing to the High Place. Thoughts on Group Leader Not a lot!. Mikhel failed to deliver on many levels. He was barely audible because he spoke so softly yet so fast. He was not very resourceful or creative when it came to food, especially for vegetarians. He though it was acceptable for me to eat a bowl of boiled veg and pita bread whilst the meat eaters tucked into a nice plate of hot food! Mikhel was complacent when it came to recounting the history, politics etc of Jordan. To him, mentioning "there's a field of solar panels to the left" would interest us and yet he didn't extend the story behind why they were there, apart from the obvious. This is just one example of how inspirational he was. I met a couple on the flight home who did the same trip but with Explore and I learnt more from them about Jordan because their tour lead oozed knowledge, unlike Mikhel. Advice for Potential Travellers If you're thinking of going to Jordan then look at Explore's trip, and they don't charge for transfers if you pay for your own flight! You might want to take a travel kettle. Suggestions I highly recommend you look at Explore's trip before making a decision.

Well balanced trip All the major sites covered, in a well balanced trip to Jordan. Most Inspirational Moment The sight of the Treasury at Petra. Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled was well organised, knowledgeable and joined in with the good humour within the group. Advice for Potential Travellers The early morning arrival on day 1, can be mitigated by arriving a day earlier

A memorable experience Jordan is packed full of ancient history and extraordinary landscapes. We absolutely loved our visit and learnt a huge amount about this country and the surrounding region. We were in a group of 20 like-minded travellers, ranging in age from 20’s to 70’s. We thoroughly enjoyed their company, and the shared experience was a huge positive. Most Inspirational Moment Although we had visited Petra the previous day with our guide, on our second day in Petra we decided to get up early so we could enter the site for its 6.00am opening. There are inevitably lots of visitors at Petra, but there are far less people at this time of day and the temperature is much cooler. Sipping freshly brewed Arabic coffee (delicious!) at 7.00am in front of the Treasury before the crowds had gathered was so worth it! The light was magical. But there were other special moments too: exploring the unexpectedly large Jerash site with its huge array of columns; sitting on the sand exploring the night sky in Wadi Rum; sharing jokes with each other whilst riding our camels across the desert as well as floating in the Dead Sea. Thoughts on Group Leader The leader for most of our trip was Amer. He was friendly, helpful, and very experienced. Amer was hugely knowledgeable about all aspects of the region’s history, culture, and religion, and answered all the group’s questions in a comprehensive and often humorous way. He often took extra time to expand his answers so that we fully understood both the past and present political and religious complexities concerned: As a proud Jordanian his perspective on the topic of Palestine reflected his views. More generally, Amer took time to explain the plans/timings for each day. With such a busy schedule I think we all appreciated his organisational skills. On the coach he ensured there were plenty of regular breaks on the longer drives. He also handled check-in procedures at each hotel so generally all we needed to do was to collect our room key from him. Advice for Potential Travellers If you are worried about the visa / arrival process, for us this went very smoothly as the Exodus rep at the airport was extremely good. Be aware that on this itinerary, you will arrive at your first hotel in Amman around 2am after the visa procedure and transport from airport etc. You are then asked to be available for departure (after breakfast) at 8am the next day for a day trip to Jerash. Some may consider adding an extra night at the beginning to address this. The Day 3 itinerary which is the drive to Petra was very long but did contain several stops along the way. Departure was around 8am but arrival in Petra was not until around 7:30 so prepare for a long day. Try to get up for 6am when the site opens on your free day in Petra. There are far less people at this time of day, the temperature is much cooler and the light is magical. Bring beach shoes for Aqaba and the Dead Sea. We forgot ours, and whilst the pebbles and grit weren’t a problem the sand was burningly hot! If you can, bring a LARGE water bottle. This saves the chore of filling up every stop. Payment by card is simple in many locations, even to the craftspeople/store holders in the Siq at Petra! Even so, bring plenty of Jordanian Dinars for food/drink/snacks etc. Also, we had to hand over quite a bit of cash to our guide to support the tips strategy (see below) so make sure you bring enough to cover this aspect. We had a small pair of binoculars confiscated by security when we checked in at our hotel at the Dead Sea Resort. They were returned just before we left for the airport. Although the hotel is in Jordan, its proximity to Israel seems to make the staff nervous of such items, so beware. We recommend you either do not bring binoculars at all, or are prepared to do without them for this part of your stay. All the hotels were OK, but nothing special. This wasn’t really a ‘hotel holiday’. From our perspective, if the accommodation is clean with reliable plumbing and has reasonably comfortably beds that’s fine, and that was our experience. Hotel breakfast buffets were variable in range of options but there was something available for everyone. As a coeliac I was able to cope although I did bring enough gluten free rolls to last the full week. Eating out (or at the hotel) was simple and the places we visited offered many venues, but the food at each was pretty much the same everywhere: cold mezze followed by kebabs or lamb/chicken stews with vegetables. Suggestions We feel both the Little Petra and Bethany-on-the-Jordan “options” were in truth essential aspects of the trip and should be included within its basic itinerary and price. Indeed, had anyone chosen not to take these options (all our group selected them), it was unclear what their alternatives would have been, other than remaining at the hotel or on the bus for several hours. We were surprised and a bit uneasy about the tip strategy. On our first day on the bus, we were all asked to contribute JD23 and US$30 each to a ‘tip kitty’. Whilst we understand Jordan is a ‘tipping culture’, we have never been asked to ‘tip in advance’ on any previous trip. By our reckoning if all 20 travellers contributed as suggested, this would have created a kitty of nearly JD900. Our guide told us that these tips would be given to service providers en-route (hotels were mentioned…) but apart from our (excellent) driver who we know received JD200 at the end of the trip we have no idea how the rest of the large pool of tip money was actually distributed and generally, we didn’t notice anything particularly worthy of a large tip from any of the places or hotels we visited. We feel Exodus need to rethink this whole area, or at least provide a fuller explanation and detailed breakdown of where the money goes in the trip notes. Better still, Exodus could consider including all tips except those for the driver and guide in the base holiday price. For the driver and guide, we believe passing “driver” and “guide” envelopes round the bus at the end of the tour (perhaps with “suggested donations” for each) is a better solution. This would allow individuals to donate anonymously what they felt was appropriate for them, without the pressure of being asked to pay a specific amount before the services have even been supplied.

Wonderful Experience We saw all the major sights and were delighted with the holiday. Mikhled was an excellent guide. We stayed in good quality hotels and we travelled in a comfortable, air conditined bus (with a plentiful supply of water). Most Inspirational Moment First glimpse of The Treasury at Petra, having walked through the Siq. The expert knowledge of Mikhled explaining the various carvings added greatly to the experience. The sheer expanse and quiet of the desert at Wadi Rum was awesome. Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled was an excellent leader who was hugely knowledgeable and was able to communicate effectively without overloading us with facts and figures. He was happy to elabarte on any topic when requested. He was very organised, had a good sense of humour, and never got flustered. It was unfortunate that the late arrival on day 1 and early start on day 2 meant that our group didn't get a proper chance to introduce ourselves. With a large group of 20 this was a slight disadvantage which took a couple of days to resolve. Advice for Potential Travellers Take Jordanian Dinars with you (rather than US Dollars). The Trip Notes need revison on this matter. The Petra Visitor Centre had a 3 D model of the Petra site which was very useful in giving an understanding of the physical relationship of the various sites and monuments. The Visitor Centre and Petra Museum should be mentioned in the Trip Notes. Travel light. There are plenty of opportunities to wash and dry clothes. Suggestions We had two meals out with Jordanian families. The first was excellent, with the dignified host and family talking about Jordanian family life and mingling with the group. We opted out of "Petra By Night" to have a "Mansaf" meal at the second family. While the food was enjoyable, the evening was not a success as the host "Jeff" dominated the evening and conversation in a manner which caused us to be distinctly uncomfortable. In retrospect we would much rather have exerienced "Petra By Night" and eaten Mansaf at a local restaurant. While we understand the need to use trusted hosts, the fact that "Jeff" was hosting our group of 16, as well as the Exodus Cycling group and an American couple (all in different rooms), did not seem to meet the objective of helping (a number of) local families. The Edom hotel in Wadi Musa was excellenty positioned but our room was not clean and had a view of a rubble and rubbish pile out of the window (photos available!). At Wadi Rum, the Trip Notes advised that we would "learn about Bedouin culure and music through interacting with the family who run the camp". This did not happen.

Epic! I absolutely loved this trip. The country, the people, the culture, the sites, the food and our guide could not be bettered! Jam packed full of fabulousness!! It was my first Exodus trip, and my first group holiday of this kind, but it won’t be my last. Great mixed group of single travellers and couples who all looked out for each other. Everything was really well organised so I was able to relax and enjoy every minute. It’s a busy trip where you are active all day every day but there’s nothing too taxing and plenty of choice with optional stuff so you can wind it up or down to suit. I chose to do everything because it was all so fab! Jerash, Petra and Wadi Rum are spectacular. I recommend doing minimal research and allowing these sites to wow you when you get there! Most Inspirational Moment A small group of us did the walk up to the high place of sacrifice and back down via wadi Farasah at Petra. One of my favourite ever walks! Thoughts on Group Leader Just fabulous! Ibrahim is kind, organised, knowledgeable, interesting, funny and has a deep well of patience for dealing with mixed groups of people with different needs. He is everything you could want in a group leader and more. Advice for Potential Travellers I read that you have to wear modest clothing but everywhere we went was very liberal. Best to be respectful but no need to buy anything special. Wear good walking shoes/trainers. Expect to walk a lot at Petra! Remember to take a bag you can put overnight stuff in for the desert (you can’t take your luggage). If you are a softie for dogs and cats, keep some pet treats handy. I bought a local data sim but barely used it - there’s wifi in all the accommodation and in the bus. Everywhere else there was no 4G anyway. Embrace every opportunity and have an amazing time! Suggestions Just do it!

Amazing experience! I lost count of how many times my breath was taken away by this beautiful country. Yes, of course Petra is the crown jewel, the elegant beauty Queen that brings you to tears with her subtle grace. She tends to overshadow the rest of the country that is bursting with history and antiquities. Mikhled took advantage of every opportunity to educate us about his country and culture. His dry wit and generous nature made the entire experience. He went above and beyond to share his world with us. I feel safe in saying we all fell in love with the country. Jordan is the total package. Go. Pick a time and go. You will not regret it. Most Inspirational Moment Walking through the canyon, catching my first glimpse of the Treasury in Petra brought tears to my eyes. I grew up reading about it in National Geographic, watching documentaries, and finally I was there. In person. It is overwhelming to say the ver least. Thoughts on Group Leader Mikhled was the perfect balance of presence & availability. He advised approximate costs of items, how to negotiate, sometimes did it for us. He included everyone in the group decisions, and he often provided snacks & treats when necessity stops were made. Mikhled shared his knowledge & love of his country and culture with us. Any minor issues were promptly addressed and resolved as best as possible. He has such a great sense of humor and truly the patience of a saint. Absolutely ?????????? Advice for Potential Travellers Go! It is a vastly gorgeous country. Every day was a new surprise. The experience blew away any expectations I had. We are here for less than a blink of an eye. See as much of this world as you can, WHILE you can. Suggestions Exodus, please include details in the trip notes about “dry hotels”, camping in Wadi Rum, and shockingly abrasive wind. As I’m sure you are aware many western folks like a drink, especially while vacationing. I feel safe in assuming most people who travel are aware of cultural differences, but some of us make assumptions about availability in tourist areas. I’ve never heard of a “dry hotel” and wasn’t entirely sure what that meant. It would be beneficial to have that information beforehand. Secondly, the hotel in Petra. At first glance we were all excited only to have carpets that weren’t clean, beds that were more like bounce houses, shower doors falling off the hinges, and one morning without hot water. I travel for work and leisure so have a certain expectation when it comes to lodging. The Edom Hotel did not meet them. The physical location was great and I believe that if the hotel were to correct these housekeeping problems it would be infinitely better. Secondly, the “camping” in Wadi Rum. Having been on a previous tour that included desert “camping” I had an idea of what to expect. Most in our group had not and were quite frankly dreading it. There are various styles of camping, from the most base level of “roughing it” to “glamping” with all the amenities & modern day comforts. More detailed information would have prevented many from unnecessary worry. The “glamping” in Wadi Rum was absolutely lovely. The people, location, food, and accommodations were warm and inviting. I am NOT an outdoorsy camper. That was my kind of camping! Lastly, the wind at Mount Nebo and Karak were shocking to say the least. No one has any control over Mother Nature. However, informing travelers of the climate and extraordinary winds would be helpful in preparing and packing. There were a few times I was concerned about losing my footing due to the 40mph+ winds. Again, no one has any control over that it is simply providing unsuspecting travelers of the possibility of it. I believe Exodus can do better with providing detailed information to travelers and addressing housekeeping concerns with hotels to ensure happier guests. All that being said, it was an amazing experience and I will sing the praises of Jordan to any and all willing to listen. My life has been enriched with the journey through this remarkable country.

Tremendous February trip 2023 First time with Exodus – they get it right – take all the hard work out of researching the how where when and then just sit back and take you on an adventure filled 8 nights. Perfect trip and overview of Jordan, taking in all essentials in a small group with small coach facilities but plenty of room. Mikheld was an excellent guide and everywhere we stayed he knew everyone and made sure we had all that we needed if anything was not quite right for some of the group. Petra was outstanding and the hotel was SO close it made up for its limited housekeeping side. All in all I would recommend this journey and Exodus in general. Most Inspirational Moment `entering the area by the Treasury having walked along the Siq. the place just kept giving and two days there are essential in order to take it all in and walk the walk everywhere. excellent Thoughts on Group Leader Mikheld is a very gentle soul who in true jordanian style wants all of the group to have a great experience. Advice for Potential Travellers None. Go with an open mind and a mixture of travel wear just as you would for any other trip - the Wadi Rum experience was fantastic but take an extra little bag with your swim stuff for the next day and leave it on the coach overnight..then your packing is much easier. Suggestions Not really. I will be back!
