Experience Overview

Take in the variety of Costa Rica by bike, pedalling past rainforest, volcanoes and stunning coastline. From the Central Valley, we cycle south with vast Pacific views to the right and dense forest to the left. Crossing the 11,150ft (3,400m) Cerro de la Muerte pass into the Orosi Valley, we ride past coffee plantations and volcanoes to arrive on the fertile Caribbean plains where banana plantations take over the landscape. We take a break from the saddle to explore the wildlife-rich rivers and waterways of Tortuguero before travelling to La Fortuna, a lovely spot at the foot of Arenal Volcano.

Trip For You
This trip is classified Road and Activity Level 3 (Moderate). For more information on our trip gradings please visit our Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us. Average daily distance: 25mi (41km)Number of cycling days: 10Vehicle support: 100 percentTerrain and route: 97 percent paved, 3 percent groomed dirt road with some moderate climbs The provided saddle bag contains a puncture repair kit including an inner tube and a box of patches and glue. If you wish to carry personal items on the bike, the puncture repair kit may be stored elsewhere, however we recommend keeping the kit close by in case of urgent need. Though many of the roads are good, expect some potholes and poor road conditions in places. Routes follow quiet backroads wherever possible. On some sections on the Pacific coast only one road is available, so you should expect traffic as we head south. On Days 3 and 4, there are long, straight sections of road and vehicles use the opportunity to pass cyclists. Our Day 10 route from Turrialtico to Siquirres may be affected by heavy traffic and on Day 13, there is likely to be heavy traffic as we approach La Fortuna. This tour also covers some remote regions. Please note, the sea has very strong rip currents in Tortuguero and is not suitable for swimming from the beach. At Cahuita, heed the warning flags.
Eating Drinking
All breakfasts, three lunches and two dinners are included. Hotel breakfasts are normally buffets. Expect plenty of gallo pinto, a Costa Rican speciality, and lots of rice, beans, fruit and grilled meats. Fish lovers will be well satisfied with a variety of fresh fish from both Pacific and Caribbean waters. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are limited but food is plentiful and tasty – please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note, we do not recommend that you drink the tap water.
Transportation
The support vehicle will carry all your luggage and personal belongings. The vehicle will follow the riders at all times, allowing you to cycle as much or as little as you like. While distances covered in the coach are relatively short, some transfers are longer due to poor road conditions, road works, heavy traffic and/or rugged terrain (for example, Day 8 can take more than four hours to reach the Orosi Valley).

Weather Information
Costa Rica is 10 degrees north of the equator and has a tropical climate. The average annual temperature is around 26C (79F) in the lowlands and 10C (50F) in the highest mountain regions. However, it’s essential you prepare for the time of year in which your departure takes place. Dry season (December to April): This is the driest period of the year and can get incredibly hot; on the Pacific side, temperatures may exceed 37C (98F). If passing through areas of dry tropical forest it can be hot, dusty and dry. Prepare for some rain even during this time of year. We aim to leave the hotel as early as possible to avoid the strongest heat of the day. In many cases, we leave by 8am; by 10am, temperatures can be hot. Your tour leader is well-equipped to deal with this, making sure everyone is safely protected and well hydrated. In cases of extreme heat, they may alter the cycling route to ensure everyone’s safety. Rainy season (May to November):  Expect daily downpours, although these are usually quite short and there is still plenty of sunshine. Typically, there are sunny conditions until approximately 1pm-2pm and then a build-up of cloud from around 3pm, resulting in late afternoon rain (most likely showers between 3pm-5pm). Usually, the sky clears by 6pm. Our cycling tours are scheduled to make the best of the weather and we aim to get going early so we have arrived at our overnight hotel before any rain. In our experience, June, July and August are the most pleasant times to travel to Costa Rica – following rainfall, the vegetation will be at its most lush and temperatures are more pleasant than at other times of the year.
Spending Money
You should allow extra to cover the cost of meals not included in the price of the holiday. Snack lunches are approximately 7,800 Costa Rican colones (US$15) and evening meals 12,600-18,900 colones (US$24-US$36) per meal, excluding drinks. Average costs for drinks are 950 colones (US$1.80) for mineral water or soft drinks, 2,800 colones (US5.50) for a bottle of beer and 2,400 colones (US$4.50) for a glass of wine.
Tipping
Our local staff are paid well and fairly for their work with Exodus. Although tipping is entirely discretionary, it is customary in this part of the world and as such we recommend a per person allowance of 3,700 colones (US$7) per day for your cycling leader plus 2,600 colones (US$5) per day for each driver and the mechanic/assistant leader. The team may ask for a kitty at the start of the trip to cover tipping for hotel porters etc. Otherwise, porters at the airport and hotels are normally tipped about 500 colones (US$1) per piece. Tipping is also expected in restaurants – most restaurants will include the 10% tip, as well as the current 13% tax, so expect to see 23% added to your total meal price.

Accommodation

Characterful hotels and lodges
We spend 13 nights in characterful hotels, most of which have swimming pools. There are three nights in remote mountain lodges with lush gardens and superb views, one with a well-known tropical botanical garden. All accommodations are well maintained, very clean and most are long-time favourites in Costa Rica. Below are a few of the standout accommodations on this trip. Dominical: Villas Rio Mar In a beautiful rainforest setting, Villas Rio Mar is a slice of Costa Rican wilderness but with plenty of amenities. There’s a large palm tree-wrapped swimming pool, tropical gardens, and a rainforest trail to explore. Sustainability-focused practices include solar power running the air conditioning in the bungalows, vegetables for the restaurant grown in their greenhouse, and a monthly clean-up of Playa Dominical beach (which is just a 10-minute walk away). Near San Vito: OTS Las Cruces Lodge Unleash your inner natural historian with a stay at the Organisation for Tropical Studies Las Cruces Research Station. It’s a hub of science and nature, which brings together researchers and wildlife lovers from across the planet, with accommodation for up to 100 people. During our time here, we enjoy a guided walk around the Wilson Botanical Garden, which surrounds the property and is home to an extraordinary collection of tropical plants and more than 400 bird species. Tortuguero: Pachira Lodge Five minutes from the main entrance to Tortuguero National Park and hugged by scenic canals, this 94-room resort has a prime location. When it’s time to relax, there’s a turtle-shaped pool (this is green turtle country, after all), a buffet restaurant serving Costa Rican-Caribbean cuisine, and a bar. But the real draw is the other residents. You may spot sloths, howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys and, if you’re lucky, an otter or manatee in the surrounding waterways.

Itinerary

1
Day 1: Start La Garita de Alajuela, near San José

We gather at our start hotel in La Garita de Alajuela, around a 15-minute drive from San José airport. There’s nothing planned today, so take time to relax and prepare for the exciting adventures ahead. Accommodation: Hotel La Rosa de América (or similar)

2
Day 2: Ride and transfer to Rio Tárcoles; boat tour; transfer to Playa Bejuco

After breakfast, we have a short welcome briefing and spend time adjusting our bikes before riding out on paved roads with very little traffic through small rural communities and a dry tropical forest. This initial stage will finish at Cebadilla, where we transfer approximately 40 minutes for lunch at Casita de Café, high above Atenas. After lunch, we transfer 45 minutes to embark on our private, guided boat tour of the Tárcoles estuary. We hope to see crocodiles, waterbirds and even scarlet macaws. After, we take a roughly 45-minute transfer to our beach hotel at Playa Bejuco. If tide and sand conditions permit, we can fit in more cycling and arrive at the hotel riding on the immense tropical beach. The full tour briefing will take place following dinner at the hotel. (Extra 6.2mi/10km for beach ride option) Accommodation: Hotel Playa Bejuco (or similar)

3
Day 3: Wildlife walk and swim in Manuel Antonio National Park; transfer to Playa Dominical

Today we start with an early-morning transfer (approximately one hour) to arrive at the renowned Manuel Antonio National Park just as it opens. Our 7am arrival will give the best opportunity for wildlife spotting and allow us to avoid the park at its busiest later in the day. Our extended visit also gives time for a longer walk on the newly renovated and less visited Punta Catedral trail, as well as a special treat: a swim at the beautiful white-sand beach set within the park, one of Costa Rica’s best beaches. Leaving Manuel Antonio behind, we transfer approximately one hour to Playa Dominicalito, where we enjoy a late lunch at the fabulous La Parcela restaurant, which offers great meals, spectacular views and plenty of wildlife - don't let the monkeys steal your food! Following lunch, we transfer 15 minutes to our accommodation in the rainforest at Villas Rio Mar. Accommodation: Villas Rio Mar (or similar)

4
Day 4: Ride to Uvita Waterfall; see stone spheres at Palmar Sur; transfer to Osa Peninsula

Today we cycle south along the coastal road, which includes a few hilly sections near Uvita and Ojochal. Our first destination of the day is Uvita Waterfall for a refreshing dip in the emerald waters; an ideal place to cool off from the heat of the day. Departing Uvita, we transfer to Palmar Sur, where we can observe the famous stone spheres produced by the ancient Boruca indigenous culture of this region and have a look at the remnants of the old United Fruit Company banana operation. Departing Palmar Sur in the bus, we head to Mirador Mogos for lunch then resume cycling at Rincón on the Osa Peninsula, where we ride a second biking stage to Agua Dulce Beach Resort. Accommodation: Agua Dulce Beach Resort (or similar)

5
Day 5: Free day on the Osa Peninsula

Today is free for you to relax and recharge in the gorgeous surroundings of Agua Dulce. It's possible to swim at Playa Pan Dulce, do some kayaking, or for those who wish to cycle, there's a flat gravel/dirt round-trip stage (27mi/43km) out to the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula. Your tour leader can help to book optional activities; most require advance booking and a minimum number of participants. A fantastic option is the sunset kayak tour and if the bioluminescence is occurring, you're in for a spectacular treat! Accommodation: Agua Dulce Beach Resort (or similar)

6
Day 6: Transfer to Mirador Osa; ride to Chacarita and transfer to Las Cruces; nature walk at Las Cruces Botanical Garden

This morning we take a 45-minute transfer to Mirador Osa (Osa Viewpoint), where we can take in spectacular views over the Golfo Dulce and Osa Peninsula. We then hop on the bikes for a scenic cycle through the hills and rainforest of the Osa Peninsula to Chacarita. Following a bus transfer (1hr 30mins) across the steep mountains surrounding San Vito, we arrive at Las Cruces Biological Station, which is surrounded by the Wilson Botanical Gardens, where we take a guided nature walk in the afternoon. Accommodation: OTS Las Cruces Biological Station (or similar)

7
Day 7: Cycle to Paso Real; transfer to San Gerardo de Rivas

Back in the saddle, we enjoy a fantastic downhill ride from the hilly region near San Vito to Paso Real, far below at the Rio Terraba. We pass through an indigenous area where villagers can sometimes be seen in traditional dress. We stop near Buenos Aires for lunch before boarding the bus for our two-hour transfer to San Gerardo de Rivas. We take a break close to one of the vast pineapple plantations for our tour leader to give some background on pineapple cultivation in this region - the fruit is Costa Rica's number one export crop. Our hotel tonight is in the mountains, so it may be chillier than you expect. Accommodation: El Pelicano Mountain Lodge (or similar)

8
Day 8: Ride to San Isidro de Perez Zeledon; transfer across the Cerro de la Muerte pass; cycle to Orosi

This morning we start with a short downhill stage before jumping on the bus for a transfer that will take us over the Cerro de La Muerte. At 11,617ft (3,541m) above sea level, this is the highest point on the PanAm Highway in Central America. We enjoy an extended lunch stop en route, where we are sure to be greeted by multiple species of hummingbirds. On this stretch, we drive through rainforest, up into the cloud forest before descending towards the Central Valley. From here, we get back on our bikes for another downhill into the Orosi Valley. Accommodation: Hotel Alma de Luna (or similar)

9
Day 9: Cycle to Turrialba

After breakfast, we leave the hotel for one of the most beautiful cycling routes on this trip, past numerous coffee plantations. With any luck, we will see farmers using their colourful traditional oxcarts to haul their crop to nearby processing facilities, as well as multitudes of Costa Rican cyclists enjoying their Sunday on this fantastic stage. Along the way, we stop at a coffee field and learn more about coffee and its role in Costa Rican history from the tour leader. As we continue through the valley, we ride around a hydroelectric dam before starting a section that involves some climbs. We then descend to the small town of Tucurrique and continue on through sugar cane plantations, taking lunch near Eslabon then transferring five minutes up to our hotel for the night. Our mountain lodge has excellent views, including over the coffee growing Orosi Valley and both the Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes. Accommodation: Hotel Turrialtico (or similar)

10
Day 10: Cycle to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and transfer to Puerto Viejo

After breakfast, we will start cycling a hilly section with incredible views, followed by a fast downhill to the town of Siquirres, where we board the coach and transfer to the Caribbean coast. Depending on our arrival time this afternoon, there may be time to enjoy a guided walk in Cahuita National Park before we transfer (approximately 15 minutes) to Puerto Viejo, a Caribbean town with lively reggae music and culture and spicy cuisine. Accommodation: Hotel Escape Caribeño (or similar)

11
Day 11: Transfer to Guacimo; cycle through banana plantations; transfer to La Pavona for boat trip to Tortuguero

Today is a very early start as we have a transfer of approximately one hour to Santa Rosa for breakfast. Then we continue (approximately 1hr 30min) to the beginning of our backroads biking stage, which takes us through several small towns within the immense banana plantations. The leader will explain the harvesting and packaging process, as well as the importance of these plantations to Costa Rica. After, we transfer (approximately one hour) to La Pavona and board a boat to Tortuguero National Park along the wildlife-rich rivers and canals used for transiting in this densely forested area. We enjoy lunch at our lodge then there is time in the afternoon to visit the small town. Accommodation: Pachira Lodge (or similar)

12
Day 12: Boat trip in Tortuguero; ride and transfer to La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano; visit thermal springs

An early morning boat trip allows us to discover the extraordinary flora and fauna of Tortuguero. At this time, wildlife is usually at its most active. With the help of our expert guide, we are likely to encounter monkeys, caiman, iguanas, butterflies and many of the 300-plus bird species here. We retrace our route by boat to the dock at La Pavona where we will start cycling through banana plantations,  Our morning ride complete, we have a transfer (approximately 1h 30min, plus lunch) to just outside Guapiles for an early lunch provided by our Tortuguero lodge. After, we continue towards La Fortuna and Arenal volcano (approximately one and a half hours). Following a massive explosion in 1968, Arenal was the most active volcano in Costa Rica until recently when it entered a resting phase. En route, we will take a break to observe thriving pineapple operations, before continuing to our town-centre hotel. This evening there is an included excursion to Volcano Lodge hot springs. Accommodation: Hotel San Bosco (or similar)

13
Day 13: Cycle on beautiful Lake Arenal to La Fortuna; transfer to La Garita de Alajuela

Following a short transfer, our final cycling stage starts with a ride through the dense rainforest surrounding beautiful Lake Arenal, with several spots to observe the volcano as we continue back toward La Fortuna. Upon reaching town, there is some free time for souvenir shopping and to enjoy lunch. The last leg of our journey is completed by bus as we transfer (approximately two hours) back to La Garita de Alajuela. Accommodation: Hotel La Rosa de América (or similar)

14
Day 14: End La Garita de Alajuela

Our trip ends this morning after breakfast.

Fantastic trip which lived up to all it advertised I had a wonderful time. This was my first solo trip and has given me the confidence to go on another. I shall have long happy memories of this trip. Most Inspirational Moment I can’t choose. Every day brought new experiences which were wonderful. Thoughts on Group Leader Gerhard was fantastic. His knowledge on his country is second to none. He always had our safety first and foremost. Great sense of humour and extremely organised. Advice for Potential Travellers Take plenty sunscreen, bug spray and binoculars. Also stay hydrated. Suggestions A couple of two night hotel stays would be great as it is an exhausting itinerary. On saying that I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Gerhardt was well organised , very accommodating ,personable and extremely knowledgeable of the local environment , . He was a good communicator with excellent English and a great sense of humour. Advice for Potential Travellers Be prepared for the heat and take a pair of binoculars ! Suggestions This was a very active holiday with only a short time to gather ones breath . An extra days rest would have been very welcome

A great trip - made brilliant by the other members of the group A full-on trip which took us to most of the must-see places in Costa Rica Most Inspirational Moment Loved the wildlife hike in Manuel Antonio Thoughts on Group Leader Rob Herschmann Advice for Potential Travellers Prepare for the humidity - it’s hard to get clothes dry so bring plenty of cycling shorts Suggestions Quite a tiring trip. Cycling mostly on main roads. Shame we didn’t get to spend as much time as hoped in Puerto Viejo.

Great adventure Great trip, we felt that we had seen a lot of the country, had some great bike rides and guided wildlife experiences. Most Inspirational Moment Many: the cycle rides through the amazing landscape of Costa Rica; the wildlife; kayaking through the mangroves; Pachira Lodge at Tortuguero Thoughts on Group Leader The group leader was very competent, well organised and kept us safe throughout the trip. However he was not local and therefore we missed out on information about the local history, traditions and cultural-social sensitivities of Costa Rica Advice for Potential Travellers The only cash you need is for tips, cards can be used for everything else.

Fabulous Cycling and Scenery / Wildlife Very full two weeks expertly led by our local guide (Memo) covering cycling on both the Pacific and the Atlantic coasts as well as across the middle of Costa Rica. The scenery and wildlife are magnificent (particularly across the more mountainous middle section of the country) with the additional activities including boat trips, wildlife walks and kayaking all adding greatly to the overall experience. Most Inspirational Moment Cycling some of the more rolling sections and sweeping downhill sections (I prefer downhills as I can get my head up to enjoy the view) during the middle part of the trip was stunning. The colour of the orange bloom on the Poro tree was magnificent (my camera could never do it justice) as was the variation and colour of much of the other vegetation. The nature walks where we saw sloth, snakes, howler monkeys plus many other creatures were also special. Kayaking through the mangroves also memorable. The walk through the botanical gardens led by the wonderful local guide at the Las Cruces Biological Station also a really educational, fascinating and entertaining. Thoughts on Group Leader Memo was an excellent and very engaged and organised group leader. His “PowerPoints” covering many and varied subject matters were both amusing and informative. Memo’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the local wildlife and plant life was particularly impressive and ably demonstrated on the wildlife walks which form part of the trip. Advice for Potential Travellers Paying electronically in dollars available everywhere (though local colones also equally welcome). Bring some imodium tablets as a few of us on the trip had upset stomachs at some point. Suggestions I scored the overall trip as 5 stars above but would have scored it 4.5 stars if available as a couple of the hotels were not at the level expected and two of the four mountain lodges advertised at the time of making the booking were not available at the time of our trip requiring the group to stay at alternative accommodations.

LA PURA VIDA We had a fantastic time and came back enthused by la pura vida, with a bundle of happy memories we shall enjoy recalling for years. Most Inspirational Moment We had too many to pick one out, from the bird and plantlife at the Wilson Botanical Garden, to the humming birds at the Quetzal Park, and the solitude of an early morning visit to Tourialba park, finishing of course with our visit to the hot springs in La Fortuna. The weather conspired to keep Arenal in the clouds and rain, so adding to its mystique. Thoughts on Group Leader Couldn't have asked for more, Andrea and the team (driver Luis and mechanic Djeison) were super, and managed the enforced changes to the itinerary without unduly spoiling our experience. Andrea was extremely well briefed and communicated clearly on all aspects of the wildlife, history and agriculture, and our visits to the plantations she led were very informative. Advice for Potential Travellers There were hardly any places that didn't take contactless payments, or took cash in US dollars, though you will be given change in colones. Beware changing currency at the airport, the fee/commission was extortionate. And do not put toilet paper down the loos. Suggestions Save for Tourialba, the park visits were very busy, spoiling our experience somewhat even if the guides are spotting for each other. The itinerary is extensive, and so involves some tiresome transfers in the bus. The in/out on the Caribbean side to Puerto Viejo was long and the time we had didn't really allow us to enjoy enough of the experience. Trimming the itinerary would also allow, eg, time for a walk in the Quetzal Park where we broke one of the longer transfers. We would add too that the quality of accommodation and food was somewhat variable, even if there are few alternatives available for such a large itinerant group.

Costa Rica Cycling Fabulous trip led by an amazing guide Memo. Most Inspirational Moment The whole trip was fantastic, a great way to see and explore Costa Rica and all it has to offer. Thoughts on Group Leader Memo was very knowledgeable and passionate about Costa Rica and keen to share information is a positive and friendly way. He had a great sense of humour, and was supportive and patient. Advice for Potential Travellers Some tough uphill sections, make sure you’re fit for the trip, that said very rewarding when you complete the cycling for the day / trip. We went in December and had fantastic weather bower it was very hot and humid so drink plenty of water !! Suggestions Fabulous trip, made even better by a fab guide and his team and a wonderful group. I would highly recommend.

Victoria Chamberlain   -  Traveled, October 2023

Wildlife galore! The wildlife on this trip surpassed any expectations I had beforehand. Really amazing. The cycling was enough – it was very hot and humid in November and I was happy that the distances were as they were. We were on and off the bus – very cool and extremely clean and well looked after by Luis (in spite of our best efforts to mess it up and make it smelly!) and the days seemed to be filled enough! I was pleased to get the opportunity to see both coasts of CR, not something other tours do. Most Inspirational Moment Spotting an ever increasing list of new wildlife - animals and plants alike, seeing hummingbirds, toucans or macaws at breakfast! The nature walks were just brilliant. But other moments include: cycling in bibical rain to Playa Platanare, staying in the Wilson Botanical gardens, staying at Pachira Lodge in Tortugeura. Thoughts on Group Leader Fab. Memo was extremely knowledgeable about Costa Rica, past and present, and all of it's fauna and flora. His talks were engaging and he had a great sense of humour. He was clear in his cycling instructions and kept us alll safe :) He was also very patient - he often had to explain things to us several times - mostly becasue our holiday brains just weren't working!! He was well assisted by Jason - mechanic - always smiling and helpful. And Luis, as previously mentioned, great driver, friendly, helpful and kept his bus as clean as humanly possible and had fruit and snacks ready for us on the stops. Advice for Potential Travellers If you have binoculars, take them. Assume you will be very hot! Take loads of pictures!

Shirley Dobra   -  Traveled, February 2023

Costa Rica Cycling I chose Costa Rica because of it’s wildlife. I was not disappointed, in fact my expectations were surpassed. I enjoy cycling, hence chose the cycling trip. Most Inspirational Moment There is no doubt that the various and varied sightings of birds and animals was what inspired me the most. Thoughts on Group Leader He was knowledgeable and caring. My only criticism was his lack of punctual departures. It was slightly annoying to get up and breakfast early to then wait 15 or 20 minutes after the designated departure time. Advice for Potential Travellers The trip notes on the web site are not completely accurate. For example, Day 11 we did not visit a banana packing facility. The trip notes need more detail in how long the bus transfers are, e.g. Day 10 the transfer to the Caribbean coast is long which is not noted in the notes. The heat and humidity can be very stressful on your body, particularly on the Pacific side at the coast. Listen to your body and ease back if you feel you are beginning to suffer from heat stress. Think about booking your own flights and extending your time in Costa Rica as it is a wonderful country to visit. Suggestions I recommend this tour as a great way to see Costa Rica.

An unforgettable experience A truly wonderful experience of Costa Rica, led by the fantastic Roberto! This trip covers so much of the country, from the Pacific Coast to the Caribbean Coast and everything in between. The cycling distances are manageable, even for an amateur such as myself, and the hotels are all of a good standard. Whilst the tour is focused on cycling, the activities around the rides mean that you get to see things you would not necessarily notice on the bikes, such as the array of incredible wildlife you would normally only see on nature documentaries. I would do the trip all over again if I could! Most Inspirational Moment Swimming in the Caribbean Sea - our tour leader factored this into one of the afternoons and the whole group loved it! Thoughts on Group Leader Roberto is an asset to Exodus! Nothing was too much for him and he went above and beyond to ensure that each person had a memorable trip. I hope to keep in touch with him and visit him on another trip to Costa Rica in the near future. Advice for Potential Travellers Pack washing detergent as not all of the hotels have laundry facilities, everywhere accepts credit and debit cards so there is no need to carry cash, pack padded cycling shorts as you'll need them and take tea bags with you as they're not always available in the hotels.

Costa Rica Cycle We have just returned from an excellent holiday in Costa Rica. It exceeded our expectations. The country is beautiful and the variety of wildlife is stunning. We cycled 325 miles averaging 30 miles a day. The first few days is on quite busy roads but you get used to that. Later in the trip we were on quieter roads and enjoyed being off the tourist trail. Each day had special interest whether it was a national park walk, boat ride or a visit to a coffee plantation. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the variety of animals and birds-especially the sloths! From a bike you see and hear so much more than in a vehicle. Thoughts on Group Leader Our group leader Roberto was well organised, had a good sense of humour and obviously loves his country. He gave us daily information in the form of laminated sheets with the day's gradients for the cycle as well as clear descriptions of the route using a map. The stopping points were indicated and he was good at anticipating our questions. Every day he made a great little video of our activities which went on the group shared WhatsApp. He was patient and courteous at all times which is not easy with a group of this size. Roberto cycled with the group and always made sure we were aware of any hazards along the route. His English is excellent. Advice for Potential Travellers It was hotter and more humid than we expected so take a few changes of cycling gear as washing did not dry by the next morning.

Costa Rica Coast to Coast Ride, Jan 2023 A smooth running and extremely enjoyable trip that covered a lot of miles in the company of a lovely group. Thoughts on Group Leader Roberto was excellent at communicating with the group in a clear, amiable and professional manner which, together with his attention to safety, gave everybody (I think!) a high level of confidence in his guidance. Advice for Potential Travellers Be ruthless in deciding what to take, if only because you will be re-packing your bag every day!

Greatly exceeded expectations, primarily because of excellent team. This is my 11th bicycle holiday in the last 6 years. This trip was far and away the best I have ever been on. The primary reason was the excellent management/delivery of the trip by the 4 trip leaders. Most Inspirational Moment The positive energy driven by the team leadership....day in and day out. Thoughts on Group Leader Jackie Garcia Advice for Potential Travellers This trip is very busy and very rewarding. I was pleasantly surprised that even though there were not long bicycle days, each day was packed with visiting parks and beaches that were made interesting by the knowledge the team leadership shared at each stop. Suggestions Drop the Puerto Viejo segment of the trip. Long transport to and from took away from the overall joy of the trip. Suggest you add an extra day in the Mt Arenal area with an extra ride on one of the nearby nice roads. Plus La Fortuna is a great little town.

Simply amazing Everyone said Costa Rica is amazing. It is. And our guide, Roberto, made it even more amazing. He shared his love for Costa Rica and made sure everyone on our trip had an amazing time. Costa Rica is beautiful… pura vida. This trip encompasses the people, the countryside, the wildlife… and some great biking. Boat trips, tours of national parks, swimming in the Caribbean, lovely accommodation, great food… and the best coffee ever. We loved it. Probably our best bike tour ever. And we were lucky to have a great group. Thank you everyone. And special thanks to Roberto, Walter and Luis. Thoughts on Group Leader Best leader evet

Wonderful Trip After reading other reviews i had high expectations which were not just met but exceeded on this wonderful trip. The real highlight for me was the stunning range of landscapes along with such fascinating and colourful flora and fauna. I travelled with an excellent group who all seemed to get on so well and who all had that determination and drive to succeed and enjoy this holiday to the fullest possible extent. The cycling is excellent for a “Moderate” trip. It is a busy schedule with 12 consecutive days, usually up early to avoid the worst of the heat and the possible rain showers in the late afternoon. There are some tough climbs but well worth the effort and there’s always the bus to get on when needed. The mileage is ideal and although it may not look too far in the trip notes, there is the heat (well over 30C). I can’t praise our guide Roberto enough along with his team of Walter and Luis. They guided, supported and encouraged us superbly, providing us with excellent information and wonderful refreshments of the finest tasting fresh fruit and snacks at regular intervals. The hotels are all fine, in excellent locations, although a few needing a little attention to repair and maintenance issues. The food is very good throughout. Breakfasts generally fairly basic but some excellent lunches and evening meals in local restaurants and cafes. I left with some wonderful memories of a beautiful country, lovely people and a desire to return some day. We extended our stay in Tamorindo at Cala Luna hotel which was excellent and a hugely enjoyable few days of R & R after the cycling.

Pura Vida! Thinking about it? Book it! Costa Rica has stunning scenery. The itinerary covers a wide variety of beautiful and diverse landscapes : coastal – Pacific and Caribbean, mountainous (the bus takes you up the big hills so don’t worry), plantations – pineapple, banana, coffee), rain forest. As well as visiting some of the main tourist highlights eg Manuel Antonia NP, the route also includes some less touristy places. I loved cycling through the small, rural communities. Costa Rica is well known for its flora and fauna. This trip doesn’t disappoint in seeing exotic, colourful plants and a range of animals I’ve never seen in the wild, including sloths. At times it feels as if Costa Rica is one giant botanical garden. Eating lunch in local Sodas (family cafes) ,recommended by our guide, Roberto, gave a very authentic Costa Rican experience. The national dish of rice and beans is ubiquitous, but there’s much more on the culinary agenda. We love seafood and there was ample opportunity to eat delicious ceviche, locally caught giant shrimps and fresh fish. Luis, our driver, provided organic fruit at regular intervals during the cycling day. I have never tasted pineapple quite like this – so juicy and sweet! Costa Ricans are generally very friendly and welcoming. Tourism is very important to their economy and you get the feeling they really want you to have an enjoyable experience. Most Inspirational Moment There were so many great moments. Cycling through rural communities in the middle of the country, enjoying the scenery and exchanging "hola" with the locals felt really good. Thoughts on Group Leader Roberto is an excellent leader. He is warm, friendly, fun and very efficient. His briefings are very clear - he uses WhatsApp to communicate details of the day on the evening before the cycling and then verbally explains things each morning before you set off . Each day he put an elevation plot for the route on the side of the bus. This has planned stops marked. I loved this as I knew where I'd have to put a bit of hard work into the pedalling. Everything went very smoothly but this is because he has everything so well organised and anticipates your needs in advance of you realising. Nothing was too much trouble. He has excellent knowledge of the country and imparts this is an interesting way. He's a real ambassador for Costa Rica. Gracias, Roberto! Advice for Potential Travellers You'll get hot at times cycling so will need to do some laundry: After 1 week there are laundry facilities at the hotel. Use this - they charge by the kg , not per item. It's good value. Take a plug for the sink as there aren't any in most hotels Don't attempt to wash clothes in a hotel which hasn't got air conditioning, it won't dry overnight (NB most hotels do have air conditioning) Suggestions Absolutely one of the best cycling holidays I've been on. I really can't recommend it enough.

Tremendous Cycling Fabulous holiday, great cycling, great group of people and brilliant Costa Rican crew who looked after us very well, Ricardo, Walter and Luis. Most Inspirational Moment Seeing the most beautiful birds at Las Cruces. Thoughts on Group Leader Ricardo was excellent, looked after everyone well and went out of his way if we needed anything. Advice for Potential Travellers Prepare for the cycling which can feel harder in the heat.

Stunning colourful country - Flora and fauna and fantastic cycling flat and hilly I would echo the comments that the standout highlight of this trip is seeing the beautiful rural landscape. There is so much colour in the birds and plants. They are wonderfully seen from the bike but also the boat rides were superb The food was never bad. I would recommend salsa caribena fish and prawns. You will get bored of rice and beans for breakfast but small price to pay for enjoying this trip! Some of the lodges are quite basic but it’s fine. Many don’t have a hairdryer so if that’s important to you, bring one I found the pattern of cycling really good. Often after a tough hill day you get a good flat day to stretch out your legs. Some of the hills are definitely more than moderate, but you challenge yourself and if you really can’t do it you can get in the bus I recommend a larger day rucksack and a little one. Because there are occasions you are asked to do an evening and next morning without your suitcase Don’t bother bringing any fancy clothes, all very casual I loved the trip, the people, the guides. Go for it Most Inspirational Moment Making it up the toughest hill section?! Also loved the boat trips Thoughts on Group Leader Funny, experienced, very knowledgeable Great shame that he isn't doing subsequent ones for a while. He is a contractor and they are giving the trips to a perm. We met him because he came with the replacement bus. Seems fine but not so fun Advice for Potential Travellers Bring lots of cycle gear, you get very sweaty Bring full range of medical pills

Verdant Country with stunning flora & fauna - brilliantly viewed from both On and Off the Bike As with all Exodus cycle trips the cycling provides the foundation for a trip led by an expert guide and back-up team, in which you sample the best cycling terrain, food and drink and highlights of a foreign country. A group of strangers come together, bond remarkably quickly in this case, and leave two weeks later as friends. Costa Rica Coat to Coast was no exception. The highlights of Costa Rica are undoubtedly its flora and fauna. The estuary boat trip (Day 2), Manual Antonio NP (Day 3), ferry across Golfe Dulce plus Las Cruces Botanical Garden (Day 6) , and finally the fabulous Tortuguero NP (Day 11 & 12) are all must-see locations. Throw in the beautiful Central Highlands (Days 7-9), plus the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and you have all the elements for a terrific two week trip though six of Costa Rica’s seven provinces. Most Inspirational Moment I'm no Attenborough yet was frankly in awe of the fantastic range, colour, sound and scale of the flora and fauna, and at such close quarters too. The designated highlights live up to their billing but is it often smaller moments that shine. Examples include a stop for fresh coconut at Playa Hermosa, walks along the beach on both coasts, a swim and beer near Puerto Viejo, the team riding formation and being overtaken by a local wearing flip flops, the serenity of the gardens by the ruined church where locals shared a Sunday picnic, & the bonding of the group - on and off the bike aided by beer, red wine and the occasional mojito. If I had to pick just one, it would be stopping mid ride in the Central Highlands, seeking a spot of shade sitting at a bus stop, and taking time to soak in the stunning views on both sides of the ridge. Picture postcard stuff. Wonderful. Thoughts on Group Leader Robert Aguilar was an excellent Leader in the best tradition of Exodus Tour Guides. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, an excellent communicator, strong rider, and responsive & flexible to traveller requests and requirements. He was ably assisted by Mechanic Paul and Driver Luiz. Paul rode strongly at the front making a good but not furious speed which kept the faster riders safely in check but not frustrated by pace. Mechanical matters were few but dealt with with aplomb. Luiz was the archetypal driver - silent but quietly effective - always on the right place at the right time with everything done. Altogether a superb team and tribute to both Costa Rica and Exodus. Advice for Potential Travellers 1. Whilst there are climbs, largely in the Central Highlands, the cycling is not overly difficult and heat & humidity more of an issue than the terrain. You don't notice it whilst riding but certainly do when you stop. Regular sunscreen and fluids a must. 2. My wife and I wore arm screens as sun protection and these were such a big hit that we lent our spare ones to our fellow riders. A buff/snood can also be handy. 3. I tried my brand new SPD-cleat cycling sandals on this trip and there were a revelation - highly recommended. 4. Take a light rain top for the occasional (heavy though not cold) shower. 5. Food is plentiful and good quality, and you do develop a taste for rice with beans in varying permutations. Fish good and some excellent steak also. Fruit plentiful - pineapple, watermelon, papaya, banana & mango. 6. You can drink the water in most places and in the few where you cannot, bottled water is available/provided. In the alternative, Chilean red wine or the local ("Imperial") beer will do. 7. There are a couple of laundry opportunities mid-trip so resist the temptation to pack too much kit - both on and off bike. 8. You don't need any local currency (colones) as US Dollars in cash (though not GBP) plus credit cards suffice everywhere. Suggestions I spent much off Week 2 chatting to Roberto about the Nicaragua/Costa Rica/ Panama trip, the hopefully re-launched new Guatemala/Honduras/El Salvador trip and the in-plan alternative Colombia trip. I have a feeling my wife and I will be returning to this part of the world.
