Trip For You
Each trip departure has two grades of skiing, ranging from Beginner to Advanced. The specific grades vary depending on the departure (trips could be: Grades 1 and 2, Grades 2 and 3, or Grades 3 and 4). Please check Dates & Prices to ensure you are picking the right week for your skill level. Please contact us ahead if you prefer to assess which grade is more suitable to your physical conditions and ski experience. Please note, for at least four of the six days of skiing, you will be on full-day tours, returning at the end of the day.
Below is a guide to the different grades:
Grade 1 Beginners: Equivalent to Activity Level 1 ( Easy).
A week for complete beginners. We start with the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique and how to turn. You will be on skis for at least five to six hours a day with a focus on learning, getting comfortable on skis and building towards longer tours through the winter landscape. This grade is recommended to people who have not skied cross country before or only skied for a couple of days.
Grade 2 Improvers: Equivalent to Activity Level 2 (Easy & Moderate).
These weeks are ideal for those who have enjoyed at least one Grade 1 holiday and grasped the basics, including a snowplough and kick turn. They offer coaching to refresh and improve technique and typically will ski a little further than Grade 1 weeks, and over more varied terrain. In some cases, these weeks are acceptable for newcomers to cross-country skiing. Beginners should be very fit and proficient in sports that develop balance. Please contact us if you wish to book a Grade 2 holiday but have not skied before.
Grade 3 Intermediates: Equivalent to Activity Level 3 (Moderate).
A Grade 3 week is ideal for those looking to push on, tackle some slightly steeper terrain and cover more ground each day. Typical groups will have a few weeks skiing behind them, be very comfortable with the basics including snowploughing and kick turns, and happy on longer day tours. There will still be coaching on these weeks, at the required level.
Grade 4 Advanced: Equivalent to Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging).
Choose this grade if you can tackle ‘ups and downs’ competently, manage a controlled snowplough descent, execute kick turns on steeper slopes and ski at a lively pace. You should also be able to get up swiftly and easily by yourself after a fall. The mix of track and off-track skiing varies.
Group Description
There will be up to 14 people per trip.

The food provided includes ample buffet breakfasts, from which you make up your packed lunch, and self-service three-course dinner. Tea and coffee are available all day at no extra charge. Weather Information
Kvitavatn is almost 3,280ft (1,000m) above sea level; at this height, snow can lie from November to May, with fresh snowfalls at any time. Average daytime temperatures in winter range from 0C to 10C (32F-50F), though they can fall as low as -25C (-13F). At Christmas and New Year, daylight hours are limited, with about six hours of good light plus twilight. By mid-February, this increases to about eight hours and by mid-March there are about 12 hours of good daylight. In winter, you can hope for periods of clear bright weather and in February and March it can become surprisingly warm in the sun. Equally, you need to be ready for the occasional stormy day at all times.
Spending Money
Cards are accepted at the lodge.
Wax for skies
You will be expected to buy and apply wax to your skis, you will be shown how to do this. The wax required depends on the outside temperature, with costs around 90 kroner (US$6.90-US$ 10) for one pot. You will also need a synthetic scraper and a cork for applying and removing the wax.
You may wish to share this waxing kit, which can be purchased from the Fjellstoge reception.
Skis also need to be returned cleaned and wax-free. Failure to do this could result in a cleaning fee of 45 kroner (US$4.35). Solvents for cleaning are available locally.
Optional Excursions
— Downhill skiing at Gaustablikk ski area: Around 430 kroner (US$40.84) per day for a ski pass — There is also a public bus to the nearby town of Rjukan and Vemork, the Norwegian Industrial Worker’s Museum on some days during certain winter weeks.
Tipping
Although optional, a tip for the leader at the end of the trip is greatly appreciated. The sum you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a reasonable starting point, we suggest a contribution of 165-220 kroner (US$23.50-US$31.50) per person for the leader.

Itinerary
The tour starts in Kvitavatn. Take your time to settle into your accommodation before we start our skiing adventure tomorrow.
We prefer not to specify in advance where we will ski each day. This is to enhance the flexibility and adapt to weather, snow conditions and the group’s ability. The next few days is a guide. We will will start on a flatter area next to the lodge, where it is safe to get a feel for the skis and the basic techniques or rediscover our ski legs. Later we will venture off track to learn, or refresh our memories, about how to adapt our skills to this terrain.
There is an endless range of skiing possibilities with 50mi (80km) of varied tracks through forests and open country, plus a good selection of downhill runs. The off-track touring is excellent and can takes us above the tree line, where there is a vast expanse of wilderness to explore – depending on the conditions the summit of Ornenipa can be reached and the Heddersfjell moors can be explored, both at around 4,265ft (1,300m).
By now, beginners will have mastered the basics and the days are spent exploring the rugged mountains and dense forest. More advanced skiers will venture into the stark wilderness above the treeline. Skiers of all abilities will fall in love with the sheer magnificence of the beautiful Norwegian winter landscape.
Today you can either venture out with new friends to ski in the area, or you may choose to hire some downhill skis, or explore the forests by snowshoe. Cross country skiing is also provided for those who want it.
We’re back on the skis for another day exploring all the beauty this area has to offer.
We enjoy a final day of skiing, this will be a full day out with a picnic lunch in the Norwegian wilderness.
The tour ends after breakfast. We’ll say goodbye to our mountain lodge, which may feel like a second home by now, and begin our return journey home.

A wonderful natural environment which they know inside out and can confidently guide groups through. Magical Everything was wonderful, the accomodation (Odd’s House), the scenery, the guides. The food was incredible, and as a vegan, I was very well catered for and felt spoilt. Even the long bus journey was beautifully scenic. The guides were patient, knowlegable, friendly and fun and everything was well communicated. I will definitely be booking this trip again.

A great holiday with great instruction. Ideal for learners as there is excellent tuition, beautiful area, interesting history and geology. If you’re not happy sharing with a number of people you might want the room upgrade. Most Inspirational Moment Up in the high country at the top of the Slack. You can see virtually nothing man made and the snow and trees are beautiful. All wrapped up with a run back down the Slack. Thoughts on Group Leader For non expert skiers the group leaders are essential for improving your skills. Having two leaders means the group can be split by ability to ensure everyone gets the right level of instruction or the freedom to just get out there. Really nice extras put on in the evening. Advice for Potential Travellers You don't need to take any Norwegian Krona. Pay for everything by card at the end of your stay and take some Euros for the leader tip. If this is your first X Country ski trip then ask Exodus sales reps about what level you should go for. If you are not sure if this trip is for you try the Finnish Wilderness Week instead which is a great tester for X Country skiing and the most incredible holiday. Drink isn't as expensive as you might think.

Great holiday Had a great trip as a lone traveller I was a bit apprehensive on the food as dairy intolerant but the chef’s were really good and the choice for me was really good. The only downside was that some people got jealous of the special desserts they made for me each day (as well as soya ice-cream) We had a great group and had lovely sunny weather although a bit hot on a few days Conditions were great the first 2 days then a bit warm Skiing was harder than a remembered but enjoyable Hardest bit of the trip was knowing what and how much to wear I packed lots of thin long sleeved items and a few bike tops which proved very useful. I found liner gloves were really helpful too Most Inspirational Moment Just being out and about each day in the beautiful countryside Thoughts on Group Leader Mary and albert were great. Not sure they were too impressed by the groups skiing skills, but they changed and chose a good variety Evening films and entertainment were an added extra, and gave me some knowledge of the region Advice for Potential Travellers Liner gloves really useful as well as a selection of hats Mary had a cap on which would have been helpful to take with me. Buff was also really handy,so have a few of these Accomodstion had a drying room which worked well Suggestions Nope

Off track cross country skiing at it's best This is some of the best off track cross country skiing you will ever find. A wonderful wild environment, with varied terrain and a variety of challenge, the best leaders you can ever meet and a great place to stay with a lovely friendly atmosphere. It is very special. I would have given up years ago if I hadn’t come here and have been coached to steady improvement over the years. I have been on other holidays with other leaders, but no-one has ever come up to the standard of Ilse and Mary. Most Inspirational Moment Getting high up on a bright day. Thoughts on Group Leader The best Advice for Potential Travellers Make sure you get the grade right for you!

Fab Holiday! I loved everything about this trip. The accommodation was cozy and the beds incredible. The food was delicious, fresh and plentiful and the surroundings stunning as they only can be in Norway Most Inspirational Moment Being on the plateau, in the high w8nds, snowshoeing through the wilderness. It was too dangerous to ski so Ilse and Mary took us out for a snowshoe instead and it was a brilliant hike. Thoughts on Group Leader The local guide for this trrip is simply incredible. A true coach, she knows exactly how to get the best out of people, always being patient and working with everyone individually, even in a group environment. She's very attentive and just a lovely person. She should be guide of the year as I have yet to meet anyone that would surpass her in guiding, teaching and general personality.. Advice for Potential Travellers Just go. You'll love it!

Cross Country Skiing at Kvitavatn, Norway This is an amazing place to learn to ski and to ski. The Fjellstue is friendly and has a great atmosphere and is perfectly set up for you to ski from your door, out into the wilderness. There is an excellent network of tracks, but the leaders offer mainly off track and with great skill and knowledge will take you away into the remote rolling hills, among the trees and above the tree line, offering fantastic guiding and tuition. I would have given up cross country skiing probably if I hadn’t come here as the support and leadership is second to none. Perfect for both beginners and for those with experience and skills. I have been back for many years, as have many others who come here. Most Inspirational Moment Doing two routes with Ilse that she had never done with groups for many years. Thoughts on Group Leader Both leaders are superb Advice for Potential Travellers If you have never skied before go for a beginners group. Work on your basic fitness before you go! Suggestions Gold star

Kvitavatn - Cross Country Skiing This trip had everything I was looking for, fantastic location with a 360degree mountain panorama, classic Norwegian lodge accommodation, healthy yet plentiful food and great leaders. The leaders were effective at developing our skills, in a fun way, yet appreciating we are on holiday. Once our skills were developed we were taken to some fantastic off the beaten track locations. I have never had so many ‘wow’ moments and taken to lunch spots to die for! The ‘apres’ ski was varied too, a combination of informative talks, films, a fun quiz and slide show of the weeks pics. Fantastic trip! Most Inspirational Moment Climbing to a high point up a frozen waterfall and having the most amazing, unspoilt views and no one else in sight! Thoughts on Group Leader Amazing. Helpful, knowledgeable, patient, informative, caring, effective. Advice for Potential Travellers Take a range of clothing because it can either be really warm or really cold. Take a thermos Flask - hot drinks are essential. You don't need to take a lunch box as plastic bags and cling film are made available. Suggestions I would really recommend this trip if you have never done cross country skiing before.

Cross county skiing in Norway Kvitavaatn is a great location. Frozen lakes, forest the mountains and the Hardanger plateau right in front of the lodge where I stayed were beautiful.. Most Inspirational Moment Probabaly day 3 when I thought I had finally cracked the whole cross country skiing lark. I hadn't but it was fun trying. Thoughts on Group Leader Mary our English guide was endlessly patient. Learning cross country skiing is bloody hard and frustrating at times! Advice for Potential Travellers Bring slippers as the Norwegians ALWAYS take off their shoes when they enter the lodge from outside so it's preferable to wandering about in your socks. Bring wax earplus because you share a room with 3 other people and there can be snorers amongst the group....

Picture perfect Excellent cross country holiday with so many different routes to choose every day, on the tracks and off. We had amazing weather and looking back at pictures, I still can’t believe I was there. Plenty of good food and good company. Most Inspirational Moment Skiing off piste on untouched snow and reaching high spots with breathtaking views. Simply amazing. Every day I thought it could not get better but it did! Thinking already to return next year! Thoughts on Group Leader Learned a lot in a week from both leaders. Different teaching styles but both Ilse and Mary clearly have a passion for what they do every day. Contagious! Advice for Potential Travellers Follow trip notes. I had everything with me and I was glad! Drinks are not that more expensive and in a week I spent very little as all else is included. Suggestions Shared accommodation is charming but can feel crowded.

Reviewed March 2016 first time skiing of any type first time skiing of any sort so everything was new to me! Enjoyed it immensely [apart from the classic ‘third day ‘when everything ached and nothing worked!!] By the end of the week the last 3 days comprised quite a lot of of track skiing and suddenly I was managing to stay upright, turn and stop going down hill! The enjoyment was enhanced by the generally superb weather, mainly clear blue skies and sunshine. Most Inspirational Moment The fourth day [Thursday] everything suddenly started to come together. On Wednesday night I had gone to bed fully expecting to be hardly able to move certain parts of my body on Thurs am, but not only were there no real aches, when we got going I actually felt like I was starting to cross country ski! Thoughts on Group Leader Both Ilse and Mary were supportive, instructive and very helpfull.

Off track ski ing in Kvitavatn We had a fantastic week of brilliant sunshine. We were largely off track ski ing and the area is wild and beautiful. Once off track we rarely saw another skier. We saw more animal than human tracks. We warmed up outside every morning to the amusement of the locals and then stretched in the evening before taking a sauna. Most Inspirational Moment Reaching the summit of the 'Eagle's Nipple' on skis. Thoughts on Group Leader Mary and Ilse were fantastic. Experienced knowledgable and patient they couldn't do enough for us. Advice for Potential Travellers Even if you have never been on skis if you are reasonably fir you will be off track skinning in a couple of days.

Great holiday Fantastic holiday – lovely hostel (the nightly sauna I am still missing), outstanding instruction/leaders, and a great group of people Most Inspirational Moment Ilse's instruction Thoughts on Group Leader Both were excellent Advice for Potential Travellers Go! A few hints for packing though: the flight times are great, but the day of the trip out means no planned lunch break - so take something with you (though you can pick stuff up at oslo airport). DO pack gaiters, a sit mat, a thermos (even if you don't want a tea or coffee when you are out skiing, a warm drink goes down well). You really don't need much cash - the hostel takes cards now, and you can run a tab. Suggestions The food is great and plentiful at the hostel. The daily stretching sessions, and then sauna visits were great, and beneficial, at the end of the day.

Cross Country Skiing: Kvitavatn This Exodus trip cannot be faulted…it was absolutely brilliant! The organisation from start to finish was smooth running; the location was perfect, providing on and off track skiing in beautiful Norwegian countryside; the accommodation was spotlessly clean and comfortable, with amazing views towards the mountain; and the food was simply delicious! In fact, we loved it so much, we’re going back this year! Most Inspirational Moment Seeing people of all ages and ability getting out to enjoy xc skiing; also, seeing Ilse (our group leader) effortlessly perform Telemark turns! Thoughts on Group Leader Ilse was fabulous! She is an excellent coach, who showed a high level of care towards us all, whilst helping us to progress our xc skiing skills throughout the week, at our own differing levels. She has a great sense of humour and is good fun to spend time with. As newcomers to xc skiing, our enjoyment of this trip was definitely enhanced by her and the way that she led the week. Advice for Potential Travellers Go for it! If you are new to xc skiing, this would be an excellent introduction and would give you plentiful opportunity to explore on/off track, in beautiful surroundings. Equally, it is a fabulous place for the more experienced skier. Suggestions You might want to plan a few days, on your return, to rest!

Third time here As I have experienced previously this is a great place to come with excellant leaders Most Inspirational Moment Hard to pick any one but certain moments stand out such as nearly being blown over by the wind and managing to remain upright on my skiis but mostly it is about the lovely scenery and great off track skiing which makes a great change from the European loipe Thoughts on Group Leader Both Isle and Mary are excellant leaders and put in so much work into making it a great trip for everyone whatever level of skier you are. Advice for Potential Travellers Good to bring a bottle of something alcoholic from duty free. Vegetarians don't worry as the food is excellant. No need to bring any extras.
