Itinerary

1
Day 1-Join trip in Puerto Maldonado, transfer to Amazon lodge

Our extension trip starts at the airport in Puerto Maldonado. If you're joining from another of our tours, and we're booking these international flights for you, we'll book the internal flight from the end point of your trip to Puerto Maldonado. It's worth noting that even if you're booking your own international flights, we can still book this connecting flight to Puerto Maldonado for you - please speak to our customer services team. Otherwise, we ask that you arrive at the airport no later than 3pm to avoid taking your boat journey by night. The Amazon Basin sprawls over two-fifths of South America, including a massive 60% of Peru, and is the most bio-diverse environment in the world. After Brazil, Peru is home to the largest section of the Amazon Rainforest, of which only a fraction is easily accessible. From the port in Puerto Maldonado, we'll travel along the Tambopata River by motorised canoe (a journey of approximately 25 minutes) and check into our Amazon lodge. Although this lodge is a premium accommodation, due to its remote location the electricity is provided by a generator and is only available for certain hours of the day. Depending on the arrival time, this afternoon, we'll have a guided walk through the jungle and the local guide will explain the tropical trees, medicinal plants, insects, butterflies and other animals we see en route. Then we'll make a quick stop at a lookout point to hopefully spot toucans, macaws and other birds. In the evening, we'll enjoy a twilight boat journey searching for animals including caimans and capybaras. Please note, this is a stand-alone extension and can be booked on any date of your choosing, subject to availability. Whilst this itinerary has been designed to complement several of our group tours, we'd like to point out that it's not a group experience and you're unlikely to be travelling with other Explore customers.

Day 2-In the Amazon Jungle, canopy walk and Sandoval Lake

We'll spend this morning on the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, which is a 1,129-foot system of two observation towers, eight platforms and seven hanging bridges 30 metres/100 feet above the ground. The walkway is designed to perform scientific research on the ecosystems inhabiting the rainforest canopy and gives us an unobstructed view of the wildlife and birds. The activities and tours at the Inkaterra are planned for the morning and afternoon when it's cooler. Each day there'll be a few hours of downtime after lunch to relax or read in the heart of the rainforest. During the afternoon, we'll take a 30-minute boat ride, entering the territory of the Tambopata Reserve. We'll walk 5 kilometres/0.6 miles through the dense vegetation of the tropical rainforest, looking out for snakes, monkeys and birds, to Sandoval Lake. Numerous species of animals live near the lake - keep your eyes out for kingfishers, cormorants, squirrel monkeys, and capuchin monkeys. At the lake itself, we might see giant river otters, black caimans and piranhas. This is also the habitat of the giant arapaima, a fish of more than 2.5 metres, weighing in at more than 200 kilograms.

Day 3-In Amazon Jungle, visit botanical garden and canoe excursion

We'll spend this morning visiting the Native Farm close to the lodge, where we'll learn local techniques of cultivation and taste some of the products of the farm. We'll then visit the Botanical Garden, discovering the variety of medicinal plants, and traditional remedies. After lunch at our lodge, we'll enjoy a dugout canoe ride on the natural pond and try native fishing techniques while enjoying the scenery. We'll disembark at the remains of Fitzcarraldo Steamboat, and learn about its history and how it's inspired the lodge. This evening, we'll take a night walk through the jungle, listening to the sounds of the birds, mammals, insects and amphibians that wander the forest at night, using the expertise of our local guide to try and spot them.

Day 4-Early morning boat to Puerto Maldonado and end trip at airport

Our Amazon adventure comes to an end today after breakfast and we'll travel back to Puerto Maldonado by motorised canoe before transferring to the airport. If you prefer, you can end your trip at the office in Puerto Maldonado and arrange a taxi transfer to the airport yourself at a time that better suits your itinerary. The office is a short taxi ride from the town and about 20 minutes by taxi from the airport. If you're booking your own flights, you should ensure that they depart from Puerto Maldonado no earlier than 11am.

I think we did about as much as it was possible to do in the time we were in Peru. We were excellently guided by Olmer (and in part by Fernando in the early part of the trip) and I have nothing but praise for both of them. Our group also seemed to gel really well from the start and throughout which made everything more fun as well. High points for me were the Nazca Lines (yes I know Explore! weren’t able to support the air flights but still!), the Colca Canyon and, of course, Machu Picchu. The trip to Lake Titicaca was great for the island visit to Taquile if disappointing for the floating village (not at all convinced that this is now anything but a tourist money spinner with little real authenticity). All in all, a brilliant if somewhat exhausting holiday.

An excellent trip, well organised from start to finish. All staff extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. When an unexpected guest arrived in our Cabana it was dealt with immediately, I can not fault at all and would highly recommend.

A bit mixed. The Amazon extension isn’t really the Amazon, so I think there was a misrepresentation in that we were on a river that fed into the Amazon, and a long way from the Amazon. Having said that, the experience was good. We did not see as much as I hoped in terms of wildlife, but there is no way to control that, and we did experience the jungle. Lots of tarantulas!

I was really looking forward to the Amazon extension after completing the Inca Trail. It promised something different, more relaxing perhaps, but certainly interesting. However, we were relocated to a different accommodation and as a consequence, the itinerary was changed. Two of the things I was looking forward to; the canopy walk and the visit to Sandoval Lake didn't happen. In fact, there was no mention of them at all while we were there. Instead, all that seemed to be on offer were hikes through the jungle. Whilst we did two of these, and they were very interesting, a third one seemed like we were just going to do more of the same. The two missing trips as mentioned above would have been the variety I was hoping for. We did go fishing, albeit with 'heath robinson' equipment, which was fun, but it seemed a bit of an afterthought. I will give a shout out to our guide though, he was interesting and knowledgeable (Sorry, didn't get his name). In conclusion, the Amazon extension wasn't what we hoped it would be, and I feel we were let down a bit, missing out as a consequence of the change to the itinerary, and didn't get value for money.

The Amazon extension at Inkatera was a lovely relaxing end to the holiday, a slower pace, despite one early start, with a well set out itinerary. The local guide I had was excellent and I saw lots of wildlife on the various trips. Food was good and plentiful . Fresh bottled water provided daily in room. There was no way to lock your accommodation/room from outside when heading out, but at night there was a makeshift bolt to secure door from inside. Very worthwhile extension.

I was SO happy that we decided to add on the extension to the Peruvian Amazon - it is the 3rd climatic “zone” of the country and so completely different from the other 2 experienced on the main “Classic Peru” itinerary. Almost up there with seeing Macchu Picchu emerging from the clouds in the previous week, was the experience of emerging above the rainforest canopy, during our early-morning Canopy Walk ! The Inkaterra Field Station was really good, the food & service were excellent and the guide, Tino, was obliging and extremely knowledgeable about the rainforest and its abundant wildlife. It should be underlined how different the packing list is for the rainforest compared to Lima and the Andes; perhaps Explore should spell out the key items more clearly - one couple arrived at the airport without any insect repellent !! In November, there was a mix of heat, humidity, mosquitoes and possible rain, so clothing needs to be thin, long-sleeved and long-legged, with waterproofs in reserve. However, don’t be put off by having different clothing for this extension - the forest canopy (not to mention the other outings) is alive with parrots, macaws and parakeets; truly a stunning sight. And this eco-tourism is one of the best ways of protecting these parts of the Amazon rainforest from the disaster unfolding in other parts of South America.

I stayed at the Inkaterra Field Station and can thoroughly recommend it. The Field Guides are very knowledgeable and helpful and the itinerary really good and varied. The rooms are spacious and my only slight criticism is that the shower water is tepid at the best ! The meals are delicious and plentiful. Please be aware that the mosquitoes are numerous and voracious so mossie repellent is an absolute necessity along with long trousers and tops.
